FOCus On HealtH Care ManageMent

the Health Care industry needsManagementExpertsDynamic innovations in medical care and demographic developments will lead to ever increasing challenges for the efficient provision of health care services. These factors have led to considerable changes in the health care sector. Prominent examples are integrated delivery systems between inpatient and outpatient care, primary care concepts, disease management programs and physician networks. At the same time, reimbursement systems for the provision of medical care have undergone almost revolutionary changes. For example, fixed price reimbursement systems play an important role for hospitals and similar trends can be observed for outpatient care and rehabilitation services. Rapid technological change is also taking place which is characterized by the enhanced use of IT-based solutions such as Electronic Medical Records, patient-remote monitoring and numerous other examples.

These developments pose considerable management and coordination challenges to most health care organizations and have created an increasing demand for highly trained professionals in such fields as hospital management, health insurance and medical informatics. An important qualification for these future managers will be their ability to effectively communicate with physicians and nursing staff for an efficient provision of medical care. This requires an interdisciplinary health care management approach, whereas traditional busi-ness administration training is no longer sufficient to manage highly complex modern health care organizations.
