Bi ging: Let's look at invitations. How do you go about inviting someone to something. How does Sam invite Victor to his dinner? Look, we're having a small dinner for some of our clients and friends after this. Why don't you join us? Spoken invitations in this kind of situation are semiformal. It's more like a suggestion than a formal invitation. There are a few different phrases you can use. Practise them with Sam. "Nhng li mi c dng trong vn ni trong trng hp ny thng c phn trang trng."; "N ging nh mt li ngh hn l mt li mi lch s."; "C vi cm t khc m bn c th dng. Unit 1

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Perhaps you could join us? It would be great if you could join us. Would you like to join us? Notice that even though 'It would be great if you could join us' is not in a question form it is still being used as a question. Notice also how we use 'could' and 'would' in polite invitations, not 'can' or 'will'. How does Victor reply? "Ch rng, mc d 'It would be great if you could join us' khng phi l dng cu hi nhng n vn c dung ging nh l mt cu hi."; "Hn na chng ta s dng could v would trong mt li mi lch s, thay v dng can hay will."; "Victor p li nh th no?";

Thats very kind of you. He says Thats very kind of you. When replying to an invitation, first thank the other person for the invitation, then give your answer.Heres Victor with some different ways of doing this Thank you. Thats very kind of you. That sounds good. And you can put them all together, like this Thankyou. Thats very kind of you. Sounds good. After thanking the person who asked, you need to give an answer, either accept the invitation, or dont accept the invitation, or give a reason why you cant answer. What does Victor do? "V bn cng c th kt hp chng li vi nhau ging nh th ny"; "Anh y ni Thats very kind of you."; "Khi p li mt li mi, trc tin hy cm n h v li mi, sau a ra cu tr li ca bn."; " y l mt vi cch m Victor lm";

"Sau khi cm n ngi va hi mnh, cc bn cn a ra cu tr li, c th l ng hoc t chi li mi , hoc a ra l do ti sao bn khng th tr li."; "Victor lm g?";

Thats very kind of you. Ill just check with my associate whether they have other arrangements for us. Victor says he has to check with someone else. If there are other arrangements, Victor would make an "Victor ni anh ta cn phi hi li mt ngi na .";

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------excuse. When refusing an invitation, you should give a reason. Look at this "Nu h c lch no khc th Victor s phi t chi"; "Khi mun t chi mt li mi, bn nn a ra l do. hy nhn vo v d sau..."; "Anh s tham gia cng chng ti ch?"; "Khng, cm n anh"; "Oh, vy sao";

Sam: Would you like to join us? Victor: No thanks. Sam: Oh right.

Its rude just to say no without a reason, and the reason should be a good one. Look again. Sam: Would you like to join us? Victor: No thanks, it doesnt sound very interesting. Sam: Oh. Sam would rightly be offended by that reply. So what are some ways of making a polite excuse? Listen to Walter. Yes, would you like to join us? Unfortunately I have another engagement, but thankyou for the invitation.

"S l bt lch s nu a ra li t chi m khng c l do no, l do c a ra trong trng hp ny s thch hp hn. Hy nhn li:"; "Khng, cm n anh. N c v khng th v cho lm"; "Sam c th s kh chu vi cu tr li nh vy"; "Nh vy c cch no a ra li t chi mt cch lch s hn khng? Hy nghe Walter";

Walter doesnt need to say what his other engagement, or appointment is just that he has already made another commitment. Notice that he still thanks Sam for the invitation. Practise with Walter some other ways of making an excuse Unfortunately I have another engagement. Im afraid I have another commitment. I cant Im sorry. Perhaps another time?

"Walter khng cn phi ni r cuc hn ca anh ta l g, n gin ch l anh ta c vic khc ri."; "Lu rng anh ta vn cm n Sam v li mi."; " Hy thc hnh nhng cch t chi khc vi Walter"; "Tht tic l ti c hn ri "Ti e l ti c vic bn khc ri "Ti khng th, xin li. C l l vo dp khc cc khng?

By saying Perhaps another time, Walter is being polite and friendly, rather than just declining the

This implies that he has another commitment, without having to say what that commitment is. This is acceptable in business. Sam and Walter make another arrangement. Watch how they do this. "Lu , anh ta ni I cant."; "iu ny m ch rng anh ta c vic bn ri m khng cn phi ni r ra anh ta c vic g."; "iu ny hon ton c th chp nhn c trong mi trng kinh doanh"; "Sam v Walter sp xp mt cuc hn khc. Hy xem cch h ni chuyn vi nhau:";

Perhaps you can join us after that for a drink? That sounds great. Id be happy to. Where shall we meet? How about the lounge bar here. About ten? Ill see you then.

Sam says Perhaps you could join us after that for a drink? By saying perhaps he is leaving the invitation open. Walter is under no pressure to accept.Practise these phrases using perhaps with Sam.

Perhaps youd like to join us later? Perhaps youd be interested in meeting us for breakfast? Perhaps we could meet later in the week?

"Sam ni Perhaps you could join us after that for a drink?"; "Bng cch ni perhaps, anh ta gi mt li mi khc."; "Walter tt nhin s ng ."; "Hy thc hnh nhng cm t ny vi Sam bng cch dng perhaps"; "C l anh s ti sau ch"; "C l anh s rt mun gp chng ti vo ba sang y"; "C l chng ta s gp nhau ngy no trong tun";

Notice that Sam says youd. 'Perhaps youd like to join us later .Youd is short for you would. Walter accepts and they make the arrangement.Notice the slightly less formal way Walter accepts. That sounds great. Id be happy to. Where shall we meet? You can use these simple phrases to accept an invitation. Practise them.

"Lu rng Sam ni youd. 'Perhaps youd like to join us later. Youd l cch vit tt ca you would"; "Walter ng v h sp xp cuc hn khc."; "Ch vo cch m Walter ng c hi thn mt mt cht";

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------That sounds great. Sounds good. Id love to. Id be happy to. "Tht tuyt"; "Cng hay y ch"; "Ti rt vui"; "Ti rt vui";

Walter says Where shall we meet? You can useshall or will, but shall we is a common usage in questions, simply because it is easier to say than will we. Shall is also used when asking for, or making suggestions. Lets look at how Sam makes the arrangement How about the lounge bar here. At about ten? Ill see you then. By asking Where shall we meet?, Walter is leaving the details of the arrangement up to Sam.Sam gives a place and a time, but because this is an informal meeting, he doesnt make it sound like an appointment. He says how about the lounge bar? How about invites the other person to say if it is not convenient.

"Walter ni Where shall we meet?"; "Cc bn c th dng Shall hoc will, nhng shall we l cch dng thng dng hn trong cu hi, n gin bi v ni nh vy nghe hay hn l will we."; "Shall cng c dng khhi mun hi hay ngh. Hy nhn vo cch m Sam sp xp lch";

And he says At about ten? as a question. This also leaves room for the other person to suggest a different time. Practise these two phrases with Sam. Listen carefully to Sams voice, and whether he uses a rising or falling tone.

"V anh ta ni At about ten? ging nh mt cu hi."; "y cng l mt cch nhm gi cho ngi kia ngh mt thi im khc."; "Hy thc hnh 2 cm ny vi Sam."; "Nghe tht k vo ging ca Sam xem anh ta ln ging hay xung ging";

How about the lounge bar here. About ten? Walter confirms the arrangement by saying Ill see you then. This is now a definite commitment, and an end to the arrangement. Notice how the stress is on "Walter xc nhn li cuc hn bng cch ni Ill see you then."; "y hon ton l mt s xc nhn v kt thc s sp

Lets have a look now at the end of the scene. There are some more useful phrases Lin. Mr Tang is joining us for dinner. Oh wonderful. I hope you dont mind. Of course not, youre most welcome. Sam: Well, shall we make a move? Would you mind if I just say goodbye to a few people? No problem well see you outside in a few minutes. Okay Victor says I hope you dont mind. Its a polite way of asking for someone elses approval but Lin cant really say no, since Victor is listening. But Lin politely confirms the arrangement. Practise how she does this Of course not. Youre most welcome. " l nhng trng tm m chng ta hc trong ngy hm nay"; When inviting someone informally, make it sound "Khi mi ai mt cch thn mt, hy lm cho n like a suggestion. That way, if someone cant accept, ging vi mt li ngh."; they dont feel so bad. Why dont you join us? "Bng cch , nu ngi ta khng th chp nhn th instead of I invite you to join us. h cng khng thy kh chu."; And if you need to make an excuse, dont just refuse "Why dont you join us? thay v I invite you to join us."; an invitation give a reason, and apologise.Im sorry, I have another commitment. When confirming "V nu bn cn xin li,, ng ch t chi li mi, hy a ra l do v mt li xin li Im sorry, I have details, use an upward inflection. About ten. another commitment.."; sounds like an order. But about ten? is asking "Khi mun xc nhn li c th iu g, hy ln whether its convenient for the other person. ging."; Thats all for today on the Business of English. See "About ten. nghe ging mt cu ra lnh hn, nhng you next time. about ten? th ging nh ang hi h l liu thi gian c tin vi h khng"; "Bi hc v ting Anh thng mi ca chng ta hm nay kt thc y.
