    Project Overview

    Introduction to TechnoBasics

In this project, students become acquainted with the computer. This introduction includes

activities to identify computer hardware, rules to follow when using the computer, and the

method to turn the computer on and off properly. Concentrating on the development of fine

motor skills needed to operate the mouse, students learn how to "click", "click and drag", "click

and hold" and "double click" the mouse to achieve the desired result. Early learning software is

introduced encouraging enthusiastic interaction with the computer. A Computer Whiz

certificate is issued at the end of the project to verify competent and safe computer use.

    Students complete the following tasks:

In session 1, students are introduced to the computer. To start, they consider how they use the computer to complete tasks. Next, they learn the function of each

computer part and apply this knowledge to complete a matching worksheet.

Afterwards they study the mouse to identify the buttons and practice how to

complete simple actions such as click, double click, click and hold, and click and

drag. The newly acquired skills are then practiced when students double click the

mouse to open the program Kid Pix 3D, click to select a tool, and then either click

and hold, or click and drag to paint a picture.

In session 2, students review the parts of the computer by playing the game Computer Spy. Afterwards, students discuss rules to follow when working with the

computer. Once familiar with computer conduct, students open Kid Pix 3D and click

and drag to make shapes that they will fill with patterns. Upon completion, teachers

outline the good behavior exhibited by students while working with the computer.

In session 3, students learn how to turn the computer on. With the machine ready for operation, they open the program Kid Pix 3D to click and drag with the Spray Can to

create unique animated designs. The session ends with students turning the computer

    off.

In session 4, students review how to turn the computer off. Then it is time to get acquainted with the keys on the keyboard. Afterwards, students open Kid Pix 3D and

type letters, numbers, and symbols. They format the text to look fancy by changing

the font, color, style, size, and alignment.

In session 5, students are introduced to the terms input and output. To learn about this terminology, students open Kid Pix 3D and make an artistic design that includes

sound. Afterwards, they discuss which parts of the computer were used to put

information IN to the computer and which parts of the computer were used to put

    information OUT of the computer.

This project is intended for preschool instruction. The skills

introduced and reviewed in this project are essential for

operating a computer. Teachers should expect that these

students are going to require assistance when completing

the activities, as the skills are new.

    This section in all TechnoKids

    Teacher Guides provides a

summary of each of the six

    sessions in the project.

  • vi TECHNOKIDS INC.

In session 6, students review input and output. Students open Kid Pix 3D and make a picture. Students apply knowledge learned throughout TechnoBasics in order to

distinguish between computer parts and non-computer parts by completing the

    Computer Confusion worksheet.

In session 7, the skills introduced during this project are reviewed. Each student is evaluated and awarded a Computer Whiz certificate.

    Session 1: Computer Basics

    Getting Started

    Overview

In this session, students are introduced to the computer. To start, they consider how they use the

computer to complete tasks. Next, they learn the function of each computer part and apply this

knowledge to complete a matching worksheet. Afterwards they study the mouse to identify the

buttons and practice how to complete simple actions such as click, double click, click and hold,

and click and drag. The newly acquired skills are then practiced when students double click the

mouse to open the program Kid Pix 3D, click to select a tool, and then either click and hold, or

click and drag to paint a picture.

Assignment 1 What is a Computer?

In this assignment, assess the level of computer exposure that your students have. Ask the

    following questions:

Do you have a computer at school?

Do you get to use the computer at school? How often?

Do you have a computer at home?

Do you get to use the computer at home? How often?

What do you like to do the most on the computer?

Following this discussion, students complete Assignment 1. This task encourages students to think

about how they use the computer. If your students are too young to read, consider asking the

questions aloud. Afterwards, have a group discussion about other ways the computer can help

    people play, work, and learn.

Assignment 2 Parts of the Computer

In this assignment, students are introduced to many computer parts and their purpose. Discuss

each computer part and its function. Consider using the Computer Parts resource file or point

    out each device to students.

Monitor: The monitor lets us see information and pictures on a screen, much like the way you watch pictures on your television screen at home.

Tower: The tower will have a power switch and a light or two. It may also have a place or places to insert disks. This case holds all of the important computer components. If it

stands up tall, it is a tower case. If it sits flat, it is a desktop case.

Mouse: The mouse is an input device that you move with your hand to point to and choose items on the computer screen. There are usually two or three buttons on the top

of the mouse and maybe even a wheel. Pressing or "clicking" the buttons on the mouse

or moving the wheel gives the computer an instruction.

Keyboard: The keyboard is also an input device. It has letter and number keys, and some special task keys that let you give instructions to the computer. It uses a cursor or pointer

arrow to keep your place on the screen. The cursor lets you know where to begin typing.

Headphones: Headphones plug into a special spot on the computer. They have little speakers that you place over your ears. Now only you can hear the sounds coming from

    the computer.

Speakers: Speakers are like headphones, but they usually sit on the desk and let several people hear the sounds coming from the computer at one time.

Printer: The printer is a piece of equipment that takes the work you made on the computer and prints it onto paper.

    This section for teachers

    explains each assignment

    and gives helpful tips.

    Optional Devices

CD-ROM Drive: The CD-ROM drive is a device that reads information stored on plastic compact discs.

CD-ROM: A CD-ROM disc is a plastic compact disc that stores information. It is called compact because it can store or "compact" large amounts of information. When you

place it into the CD-ROM drive, your computer can read the information on it. The most

popular use for a CD-ROM is for music. If you put a music CD-ROM into your computer's

CD-ROM drive, you can listen to music too!

DVD-ROM Drive: Much like the CD-ROM drive, the DVD-ROM drive also reads information stored on plastic DVD-ROM discs. It can also read information on a CD-ROM disc.

DVD-ROM: A DVD-ROM disc looks much like a CD-ROM disc, however, the information stored on it is in a different format. It can hold a lot more information than a CD-ROM disc

and can only be read by a DVD-ROM drive. The most popular type of DVD-ROM disc is

    used to store movie files.

Scanner: A scanner copies a picture or document into the computer. There are many types of scanners. Most look like a flat tray with a glass pane and a lid to cover it.

Microphone: The microphone records your voice when you sing or speak into it.

Digital Camera: Photos are taken with the camera away from the computer and stored on a memory chip. Then the camera is plugged into the computer and the images are

coped from the memory chip onto the computer.

USB Memory Stick: A memory device used to store files. The USB memory stick makes it easy to move files from one computer to another.

Assignment 3 Getting to Know the Mouse

In this assignment, students are introduced to the mouse. Begin by demonstrating how to place

the hand on a mouse and the skills of pointing, clicking, and double clicking.

Demonstrate How to Hold the Mouse

Hold up your right hand. Students should follow suit. Then make a fist and extend only the index

finger. Check to make sure students all have found the correct finger. Now, demonstrate how to

hold the mouse, positioning the right index finger on the left mouse button. To simulate how to

use the mouse, either have students place their hand over a "real" mouse, or pretend by placing

their hand, palm down, on their thigh just above the knee.

Demonstrate the Role of the Mouse

With the desktop visible, move the mouse around the screen so that students can see the mouse

pointer. Draw students' attention to the fact that when the mouse moves on the mouse pad or

desktop, the pointer moves on the screen.

    Introduce Mouse Terminology

Click: This action is used to make a selection. Press the left mouse button once.

o Have students lift the index finger and press down once on the left mouse button or simulate on the leg reciting, "click."

  • TECHNOBASICS

    1-4 TECHNOKIDS INC.

Double Click: This action is used to open a program or a folder. The left mouse button is pressed twice quickly.

o Have students lift the index finger and press down twice on the left mouse button or simulate on their leg and recite "click, click."

Click and Hold: This action is used to draw, paint, or move an object on the screen. The left mouse button is held down.

o Have students lift the index finger and press down the left mouse button or simulate on their leg. Hold the button (finger) down and

    recite "click and h o l d."

Click and Drag: This action is also used to draw, paint, or move an object on the screen. The left mouse button is pressed down and held while moving the

    mouse to a new position.

o Have students lift the index finger and press down the left mouse button or simulate on their leg and hold the finger down, then move

the mouse (hand) to a new position on the mouse pad (leg). Recite

    "click and drag."

    Assignment 4 Mouse Practice

In this assignment, students open Kid Pix 3D and explore some of the painting tools. The goal is to

gain confidence with their abilities, learn about the program, acquire mouse control, and most

importantly HAVE FUN! Follow up the activity by discussing how each computer part helped

them use the software. Model to students how to open Kid Pix 3D.
