Lehen Karlistaldia eta Britainia Handiko ilustratzaile militarrak

Europak ibilbide luzea egin behar izan zuen sistema liberala ezartzeko, herrialde bakoitzak bere erritmoa eta bilakaera eraman zuelarik. Espainian Lehen Karlistaldia lehertu zenerako, aldaketaren aurreko erresistentzia ezaugarri izan zuen absolutisten eta liberalen arteko gerra zibila, Britainia Handian gorpuztuta zegoen sistema liberala, eta erabaki zuten Errege Itsas Armada eta soldadu boluntarioak bidaltzea, Penintsulako iraultza liberalaren alde borroka zezaten.

Testuinguru horretan, britainiar militar batzuek beren lekukotza utzi ziguten akuarelen eta litografien bidez, paisaiak eta eguneroko bizitzako gorabeherak irudiztatu baitzituzten, gerrako bizipenez gain.

Hornbrook aita-semeak. Akuarelen koadernoa eta grabatuak.

Richards eta Thomas HORNBROOK militar britainiarrak ziren eta Euskal Herrian bizi izan zuten esperientzia irudikatu zuten irudien, akuarelen eta estanpen bidez.

Richards, aita, Britainiar Itsas Armadako kapitaina zen eta Euskal Herrian egin zuen egonaldian paisaien eta eguneroko bizitzaren irudiekin akuarelen koaderno bat osatu zuen. Thomas, semea, Britainiar Legio Laguntzailekoa, akuarelak pintatu zituen eta, bere lanekin, litografien bilduma bat argitaratu zuen Londresen, izen honekin: Twelve Views in the Basque Provinces illustrating several of the actions in wich the British Legion was engaged with Carlist Troops.

Britainiarrak Karlistaldian

Britainiar armadak Kantauriko kostaldea kontrolatu zuen 1834ko urteaz geroztik, karlistek ez zezaten armarik lehorreratu. Espainiako gobernu liberalak eta Europako potentzia liberalek (Britainia Handia, Frantzia eta Portugal) sinatu zuten Aliantza Laukoitza izeneko itunaren ondorioz hartu zuten parte gerran. Izan ere, Zumalakarregiren arrakasta militarrek behartuta, gerran gehiago busti zitezen eskatu zien Madrilek bere aliatuei, eta britainiarrek, eskaera horri erantzunez, boluntarioen militar gorputza sortu zuten 1835eko ekainean, Legio Laguntzailea izenekoa.

Britainiar Legio Laguntzailea borrokan

Hala, martxorako, 800 baino gehiago ziren hildakoak, gehienak gaixotasunez. Lord John Hay gotorlekua

Jaizkibel mendian eraiki zuten Britainiako Errege Itsas Armadaren zulatzaileek

1836ko udan, Pasaia lurreko erasoetatik babesteko. Lord John Hay komodoroaren izena hartu zuen, - Britainiako Itsas Armadaren euskal kostaldeko arduraduna -, hark agindu baitzuen eraikitzea.

Britainiako Itsas Armadako 160 lagun bizi izan ziren bertan. Bai Hornbrook aita-semeek bai Wilkinson-ek gotorlekuaren irudiak egin zituzten.

1924an, hilerria birgaitzea erabaki zuen Donostiako Udalak. Urte bereko irailaren 28an inauguratu zuten, Maria Cristina eta Victoria Eugenia erreginak bertan zirela, Britainia Handiko enbaxadorearekin eta agintari zibil eta militar ugarirekin batera.Monumentuaren atarian hitz hauek zizelatu zituzten harrian, gaur egun ere irakur daitezkeenak: “A la memoria de los valientes soldados británicos que dieron la vida por la grandeza de su país y por la independencia y la libertad de España (Beren herriaren handitasunaren alde eta Espainiaren independentziaren eta askatasunaren alde beren bizia eman zuten britainiar soldadu ausarten oroimenez)” eta “Inglaterra nos confía sus gloriosos restos. Nuestra gratitud velará su eterno reposo (Ingalaterrak bere gorpuzki aintzatsuak utzi ditu gure ardurapean. Gure esker ona izan bedi haien betiko atsedena)".

Henry Wilkinson-en biografiaren datu gutxi dauzkagu. Britainiar Legioko medikua zen

eta 5. erregimentuan sartu zen 1835eko urtean, zirujau bezala. Ondoren, Eskoziar Granadarien erregimentura eraman zuten eta Britainiar Legio Laguntzaileko Estatu Nagusira, berriz, 1837ko martxoan. Bere egonaldian Sketches of Scenery in the Basque Provinces of Spain izeneko obra idatzi zuen, Londresen argitaratua 1838an. Euskal lurraldetan izan zuen esperientziaren narrazio interesgarri horretan udalerrien ikuspegiak eransten ditu, eta baita ilustrazio musikalak ere, euskal doinuen eta soldadu espainolei entzundako abestien partiturez osatuak.
