    TEXT: Baysolvex D2EHPA pure is a very efficientand versatile extraction agent (solvent) inliquid-liquid extraction processes forpurification, enrichment, separation andrecovery of metal salts.

    Baysolvex D2EHPA pure is also used as aprecursor for wetting agents and other textileauxiliaries, and as a mould release agent aswell.

    SolubilityBaysolvex D2EHPA pure is soluble incommon organic solvents such as aliphatic,aromatic and chlorinated hydrocarbons aswell as in alcohol. Baysolvex D2EHPA pure is only slightlysoluble in water (0.1 % by weight at 20C).However, it is very soluble in caustic sodawith the formation of its sodium di (2-ethylhexyl) phosphate salt.

    The safety precautions normally appliedfor acid-base neutralizations must beobserved when mixing di (2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid commercial productwith concentrated sodium hydroxidesolution.

    StorageThe product can be stored in tightly sealedoriginal packaging without quality deterio-ration for a period of at least two years,where material is stored under the appro-priate conditions.

    Materials for EquipmentThe following materials have proved suitablefor the metering tanks, pumps and pipes forBaysolvex D2EHPA pure:glass, stainless steel (e.g. DIN W1.4571 =US AISI 316 TI), plastics such as poly-ethylene and polytetrafluoro ethylene(PTFE). Seals should be made of PE, PTFEor graphite.Normal steel (W 1.0254) is unsuitablebecause of its reaction with di (2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid which results in theformation of hydrogen.

    Application

    Baysolvex D2EHPA pure distinguishes oneself by the fact that it is virtually free of M2EHPA[mono (2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid] and exhibits a very low iron content only.

    Liquid-liquid Extraction

    The following is an overview of the mostimportant extractions carried out withD2EHPA in industry :

    Lanthanide extraction from HClsolution (bastnaesite concentrate whichhas been reprocessed using hydro-chloric acid)

    Uranium(VI) extraction from H3PO4solution (by-product in the production ofwet-process phosphoric acid)

    Zinc(II) extraction from chloridicsolution (reprocessing of pyrite cinder;roasting in chlorine)

    Zinc(II) extraction from Ca2+/Cl-solution (reprocessing of pyrite cinder;roasting in chlorine; Kowa-Seiko pro-cess)

    Zinc(II) extraction from Na+/H+/SO42solution (ZnSO4 wastewater from theproduction of viscose fiber)

    Zinc(II) extraction from sulfuric acidsolution containing Fe3+ (jarositewashings)

    Iron(III) extraction fromHF/HNO3/Cr3+/Ni2+, etc. solutions (spentstainless-steel pickling agents)

    Calcium(II) extraction from MgCl2solution (purification of concentratedMgCl2 solution)

    Calcium(II) extraction fromMg2+/Ni2+/Co2+/SO42- solution (separa-tion of Ca2+ during the recovery of Ni bythe HIKO process)

    Beryllium(II) extraction from sulfuricacid solution (recovery of beryllium fromberyl and bertrandite which has beenreprocessed using sulfuric acid)

    Cobalt(II) extraction from Ni2+/Na+/SO42- (cobalt refining)

    Gallium(III) extraction from neutralsulfate solution (concentration of a dilute

    gallium sulfate solution in the recoveryof gallium from primary ore)

    Molybdenum(VI) extraction fromsulfuric acid solution (reprocessing ofMansfeld furnace slags to giveCaMoO4).

    Due to the fact that Baysolvex D2EHPApure is virtually free of M2EHPA [mono (2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid] best selec-tivities can be achieved; e.g. in case of theZn2+ / Fe3+ separation.

    Baysolvex D2EHPA pure is always used indiluted form, generally in concentrations of10-30 %. The diluents employed are usuallyhigh-boiling aliphatic hydrocarbons (forexample kerosene or Shellsol D70).

    In order to improve the phase separation, itis also possible to add solubility promoters(modifiers), for example tributyl phosphate,isodecanol or 2-ethylhexanol, in an amountin the order of 1 10 %.The modifiersincrease the solubility of the D2EHPAsodium salt or the D2EHPA metalcomplexes in the aliphatic diluents andconsequently, prevent the formation of athird phase. This is particularly importantwhere there are high metal loading, pHvalues are above 3.5, and in the productionof the D2EHPA sodium salt. In this case theaddition of a modifier may be necessary.The modifier may affect the position of theextraction equilibrium.
