In more formal speech, this type of structure is quite common. We use "if" or "whether" to report "yes/no" questions. and wh-word (who, what, where...) in wh-questions. They are "questions within questions" because although we are asking, for example, "Do you know? ", we really want some other information. Notice that in the "Do you know ", "Could you tell me ", etc., part of the question, the auxiliary verb, e.g. "do" or "could", comes before the subject. In the "real" question, however, the same word order rules apply as for questions in reported speech. Finally, we must put a question mark at the end. Nuala's Grammar Explanation: To make simple questions in English, I'm sure you know, we use 'What', 'Why', 'Who' etc. and then we invert or change round the subject and the first verb. Listen: Example: What's the time? But this isnt the only way of asking for the same information. If we want to be more formal or more polite, we use longer, more indirect ways of asking questions. Listen: Example: Could you tell me what the time is please? This kind of question has two parts. They start with a phrase such as : 'Could you tell me.?' 'Do you know?', 'Have you any idea?', 'Would you mind telling me?' Listen: Example 1: Do you know when the film finishes? Example 2: Have you any idea where I left my keys? Example 3: Would you mind telling me how to get to the post office please? The information which the questioner wants is then expressed in the second half of the phrase in a form which is not like a question. We don't change the order of the subject and verb. What time is it? Could you tell me what time it is? Where is he? Could you tell me where he is? So, to recap then: when we want to ask a question in a more formal or polite way than usual, we can use an indirect question. And we make it with an expression like 'Can you tell me' plus the word order of a statement, rather than the inverted word order of a simple question. That's all from me, good luck with your grammar challenge! Or to be more formal or polite, we can ask an indirect question I wonder if you could tell me where Brighton Pier is? Word order INCLUDEPICTURE "http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/images/clear.gif" \* MERGEFORMATINET When we create indirect questions, the question (What time is it?) becomes part of a longer sentence or questions (Do you know?) and the word order changes from the order of a direct question. For example: Direct: What time is it?Indirect: Do you know what time it is? Direct: Why was he late?Indirect: Can you tell me why he was late?Direct: What is that?Indirect: Would you mind telling me what that is? Using 'do' When there is no auxiliary verb (be, do have, can, will etc) in a sentence, we need to put in do, does or did when we create a direct question. When we make this into an indirect question however, we don't use the verb 'do'. For example: Direct: When does the lesson end?Indirect: Could you tell me when the lesson ends? Direct: What car does she drive?Indirect: Can you tell me what car she drives? Direct: How did you make that cake?Indirect: Would you mind telling me how you made that cake? Direct: Is this the right bus for Oxford Street?Indirect: Do you have any idea if this is the right bus for Oxford Street? Direct: Is she French? Indirect: Do you know whether she is French (or not)?
