Berkshire Hills Hadassah Youth Aliyah Fundraiser t May 29, 2018 at 2 pm

Now in its 85th year, Youth Aliyah (YA) has rescued over 300,000 children from more than 80 countries and has expanded its mission to address the needs of children in Israel. Over one third of the children who live in Israel live in poverty and over 450,000 children are considered at-risk, facing sexual and physical abuse, learning disabilities and neglect. Many are immigrants who have not been able to find a place in the society, and have been unable to cope with the cultural changes and challenges of learning a new language. Youth Aliyah has opened their villages to these chil-dren, and through the adoption of an educational philosophy of re-pair: Tikkun Olam (Repairing the World) and Tikkun Halev (Mend-ing the Heart) have changed their lives. The YA educators have of-fered safety, structure, remedial programs, warm residential care, and therapy, exposure to art, mu-sic, sports, animals, travel, histo-ry, attention and love – all things, tangible and intangible, needed by children to flourish. The be-lief is that once an individual’s heart is mended, he, or she, can reach out and support others, and break the cycle of dysfunction in which they have been trapped.

The children say that they expe-rience love there…some, for the first time.

The students from YA villages suc-cessfully complete their ‘bagrut’ (matriculation) requirements at twice the national average, and 97% of the graduates, both boys and girls, do their army service in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). Approximately 20% of the gradu-ates volunteer to do an additional year of community service before their army service, and a grow-ing number pursue higher educa-tion after their army service. YA children have been able to gradu-ate high school and learn a trade and many are achieving advanced educational goals. Some are even attaining the status of officer in the IDF! YA students are able to travel the same path to a sustain-able future as their counterparts who are attending traditional schools.

Youth Aliyah gives these children a future…one child at a time.

Come and celebrate with us at a “Mingle and Munch” Reception at the home of Marcia and Charles Mandel in Pittsfield. We are pleased to offer a panel discussion

with Berkshire women who are, and have been, active in reaching out, professionally and through community volunteerism, to help repair the world and heal the hearts of many:

Carol Good Kaufman, PhD., National Chair of Youth Aliyah Child RescueCarole Siegel, Ed.D., Department Chair, School Psychologists and Adjustment Counselors - Pittsfield (retired)Ellen Masters, National Portfolio Council of Hadassah National, Jewish educator at Knesset Israel Hebrew School, PittsfieldDr. Rosalind Kopfstein LCSW, DSW: Co-President, Berkshire Hills Hadassah

The focus will be on addressing the needs of at-risk children and how best to provide an environ-ment in which they can flourish. The funds raised will help provide a scholarship to attend the Joy of

OurheldonHadassahMedicalOrganization(HMO)Tuesday,100the100SchoolofNursmailformoreinformation.

Sherry Boullt It is snowing (again) as I write this – but I know warm weather is coming!

We wanted to make sure that you had plenty to do once the nice weather arrives so we have put together quite a list of events

and activities for you to choose from. We look for-ward to seeing you at some (or all!) of them.

In addition to our usual fundraisers (Youth Aliyah, Chai Tea, and Donor Dinner), we are offering fun and stimulating events. Join us for the Hadassah Magazine Discussion Group or maybe for Book Club. The conversations are always lively and the snacks are delicious!

Maybe you want to learn something new – or brush up on your knitting, crocheting or Mah Jongg game. Come learn a new skill and have fun doing it!

We are going to Tanglewood, Jacob’s Pillow, and also have a golf outing planned at Bas Ridge Coun-try Club. We may even try to get in a mini golf event or a ballgame at Waconah Park. There is something for everyone (we hope) and we can’t wait to see you!

The Full Circle Campaign ~ HADASSAH MEDICAL ORGANIZATION360° of HEALING

This month, I’d like to share with you an exciting new fundraising campaign. In June, 1961, at the request of David Ben Gurion, Hadassah was asked to build a new, modern medical center in West Jerusalem. This was the beginning of Hadassah Ein Kerem campus and the centerpiece was the Round Building. Our mothers, grandmothers, aunts and many, many others built this incredible medical center, and now it is our turn to expand and modernize it.

Hadassah Medical Organization (HMO) brings exemplary care to over one million people annually. HMO serves without regard to race, religion, sexual orientation or nationality and was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize in 2005 for building bridges to peace through equality in medical treatment.

Now is the time to focus on the next critical component of the campus re-envisioning—the Round Building, located on the Ein Kerem campus and the original home of outpatient care.

Renovation and expansion of the Round Building will include 200 new beds, renovating and upgrading 17 operating rooms, larger rooms for more patient privacy and to reduce the risk of infection, as well as strengthening the building infrastructure to protect the hospital from earthquakes and conventional, biological or chemical attacks. There will also be a state-of-the-art simulation lab.

It’s a remarkable opportunity for Hadassah. As the population of Jerusalem grows, the renovation and expansion of the Round Building on the Ein Kerem campus will ensure a higher level of patient care, increase the number of patients HMO serves each year, and contribute substantially to HMO’s growth.

Co-Presidents’ Messages

Our friendly and tasty Chai Tea - Pot Luck benefitting Young Judaea will be held on Tuesday, July 10th at noon at the home of Alice and Len Schiller. The Hadassah Medical Organization (HMO) Donor Dinner will take place on the evening of Tuesday, August 28th at the Country Club of Pittsfield. This year marks the 100th anniversary of HMO! We will also be honoring nurses in recognition of the 100th anniversary of the Henrietta Szold Hadassah-Hebrew University School of Nursing! Please put these dates on your calendar and watch your mail for more information.

One of the best ways to ward off Winter Doldrums is to participate in the Berkshire Hills Hadassah Chef of the Month program. On Febru-ary 27th, fifteen women enjoyed the warm ambience at Enso restaurant in Lenox. We sat around the tables in their Hibachi room. Two chefs regaled us with their fancy culinary feats - twirling knives, creating pyrotechnical thrills, showing us how to prepare the meal we would be eating. Lunch included salmon,

veggies, rice and noodles Hibachi style. We were treated to Asian salad and miso soup along as part of the delicious luncheon. This monthly winter program is coordi-nated by Julia Kaplan, Dale Drim-mer, and Pattie Lipman. Watch for announcements of future events and join in the camaraderie. If you would like to help plan the fall events, please contact Ellen Silver-stein at [email protected].

Hadassah’s Annual Giving Programs

Keepers of the Gate and Chai Society are Hadassah’s major annual giving programs. Keepers contribute $1,000 and Chai Society members contribute $180 annually to help sustain Hadassah’s life-saving, life-enhancing work. These contributions can be designated for a specific Hadassah project or where National deems most needed.

Among the choices are: ➢ Hadassah Medical Organization (HMO), which conducts groundbreaking research in many areas. Highlights of its work in stem cell research involve: using a patients own bone marrow stem cells to improve motor function in ALS disease; generating neurons to improve memory in Alzheimer’s patients; successfully preventing nerve degeneration in MS patients by injecting stem cells into the spinal chord. ➢ Youth Aliyah, which helps at-risk children develop skills to become independent and successful, productive members of Israeli society. ➢ Young Judaea, which helps to keep American youth connected to Israel and their Jewish heritage through its summer camps and Israel programs. Although Young Judaea is now an independent organization, Hadassah still helps to fund it.

As Hadassah members we can all be proud of our success in many areas, but we cannot forget that all these proj-ects depend on annual funding. Please consider making an annual gift to Hadassah by becoming a Keeper of the Gate or Chai Society member. These gifts can be made by check, credit card or stock donation monthly, annually or at any interval. Let me know of your interest or of any questions. Thank you for considering being an annual supporter at one of these levels.

U.S. Aid to Israel Secured Taken from Hadassah National Action Center website, April 1, 2018

Arlene D. Schiff

On March 23rd, Congress passed the FY 2018 Omnibus Appropria-tions bill, which renewed major US-Israel security cooperation and economic partnership programs. The Omnibus Appropriations bill renews $3.1 billion in vital foreign aid to Israel, including funding for: joint US-Israel missile and rocket defense systems in the amount of $705.8 million, $45.7 million for the development of technologies to help locate and destroy terrorist tunnel systems ( a $5 million dol-lar increase from last year), water desalination programs, and the funding for the establishment of a new US Israel Center of Excellence in energy and water technologies.

The bill also includes a provision to pressure the Palestinian Authority to stop payments to terrorists and their families (The Taylor Force Act).

In September 2016, Israeli and American leaders signed a new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to be implemented in 2019 when the current pledge expires. This MOU helps ensure Israel’s strategic interests and reaffirms America’s support for Israel’s secu-rity. The United States is set to pro-vide Israel with a financial package amounting to $38 billion over the course of the next decade along with missile defense systems—the largest foreign aid package to any

country in history. The new MOU will be valid until 2028 guarantee-ing Israel—for the first time—pro-visions for missile defense projects which were formally drawn from funds directly from Congress.

Additionally, as part of the FY18 funding, through the American Schools and Hospital Abroad and Ocean Freight Reimbursement programs, Hadassah Medical Or-ganization will be able to purchase equipment such as surgical tools to high-tech imaging machines (MRI, ultrasound, mammography) saving millions on import fees.
