Dear families,

Spring is typically the time when I write to you celebrating our recent achievements and looking

forward to the events and activities planned for after Spring Break. It is remarkable how quickly

things can change!

I encourage everyone to read through these pages and enjoy the successes and experiences of our

students and staff. There has been lots of smiling and laughing, learning and growing, that has

occurred in recent months. With so much changing so rapidly, it becomes increasingly important

to celebrate and remember these special moments.

I have discovered that empty, silent school hallways are sad school hallways. I miss the vibrancy

and energy of active and joyful students and staff in our halls. I am heartened daily, though, by

stories from teachers, excitedly sharing online successes of their students, and making connections

with their families. I encourage everyone to maintain these very important connections!

Although some planned activities have been canceled or postponed, it is our sincere hope that we

will be together at school again soon, and that we will have many new activities to look forward

to.

I encourage all of you to take care of yourselves and maintain social distancing as we all do our

part to flatten the curve. It is important for all adults to model both calmness and social distancing

as we work together to keep our community safe and healthy.

Be well and I hope to see you soon

Ms Linton

* Counselling * As we are all aware, our world has recently been shaken by the Covid-19 pandemic. Our school community

certainly looks and feels very different right now: classes have been suspended for the next few weeks; most

businesses, organizations and gathering places have been closed to the public; social distancing in public is a

new normal; and families are expected to stay at home as much as possible.

Naturally, the uncertainty that comes with such changes can bring about additional stress and anxiety for

adults and children alike. It’s important to recognize the signs of anxiety in ourselves and our loved ones, and

to have tools and strategies at our disposal to help us manage. Even though we can’t get out and about, there

are many online self-care apps and websites that contain tools and strategies for adults and children. The good news is that the pandemic will not last forever and the more diligent we are in putting measures in

place now, the quicker life will return to normal.

We have compiled a few resources to help support you in practicing self-care and in helping you maintain

mental and emotional health: Here is a Coping Calendar from the website “Action For Happiness” URL:

https://www.actionforhappiness.org/

Websites Phone Apps https://www.anxietycanada.com/

Mindshift http://www.adam.mb.ca/

CALM https://www.actionforhappiness.org/

If families are in need of immediate assistance regarding anxiety, they can contact the Anxiety Disorders

Association of Manitoba. ADAM has a new support line that will be checked regularly between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on weekends. People

are asked to leave their name, phone number or email address and an ADAM representative will get in touch

with them within a short period of time. The contact number is: 204-925-0040

Reminders from the school office:

PARENTS... THE OFFICE SHOULD BE YOUR FIRST STOP when you enter the school during the school day. This minimizes disruptions to teachers during their teaching and keeps us accountable as to who is in our building. All outside doors will be locked during the school day except for the front entrance. If you are volunteering or visiting, there is a sign in/out book and a pass to be worn while you are here. If you are dropping off something for a student, please bring the item to the office and your child will be called down. PARENTS... THE OFFICE SHOULD BE YOUR FIRST STOP when your child is coming to school late. The office will provide a late slip and call into the classroom to make sure the class is there. PARENTS... THE OFFICE SHOULD BE YOUR FIRST PHONE CALL (204-958-6832) when your child will be away from school. There is a 24-hour answering machine so you can call anytime to report an absence. If your child is absent from school and you have not informed us of his/her absence, the office will contact you. If you know your child will be absent for an extended period of time due to a vacation, illness or has a scheduled appointment, please write a note directed to the school office. PARENTS... Please listen to your voice mail before you call the school back. Most staff members will leave a message to let you know who and why they are calling. It makes it a lot easier for the office to direct your call if you know who you need to speak with.

Please remember that all students must wait outside for the 8:40 a.m. entry bell. For K – Grade 5, there are two 15 minute recesses and one 30 minute lunch recess during the day. The students look forward to going outside to play and it is more enjoyable when they are dressed for the weather.

The school entry bell is at 8:40am Lunch is 11:35-12:35

School dismissal is at 3:30

Please Note: The parking lot is a one way. Visitors are welcome to park in any spot that does not have an assigned number. Please keep an eye on your children when walking in the parking lot. The safest way is to hold your child’s hand. It is easier to see an adult than a small child. Working together to keep students safe.

Dear Parents, ALL students are asked to avoid bringing any nut products for lunch and/or snack. Thank you for your cooperation. Should you have any questions, please call the school at (204) 958-6532.

It is always a good idea to have an extra pair of pants, shirt, socks and even a pair of underwear in your child’s school bag. Accidents happen on the school ground or during lunch. Tucking them into a small pocket of the school bag and letting your child know where they are is a great way to avoid any embarrassment.

Community Connector News

It’s hard to believe it’s almost spring! We have been very busy hosting Kinderlinks programs in

the Community Room. Our FREE drop in Stay & Play program will continue when school

reopens on Thursday mornings from 9-11a.m. until June 4th. Families with preschoolers can come

enjoy a morning of fun playing with toys, creating art, reading, singing and enjoying a healthy

snack. We will also be hosting 2 registered preschool programs this spring.

Shake, Rattle & Rhyme is a music themed program where participants will play a variety of

instruments, we will sing & dance with ribbons and scarves, read, enjoy a healthy snack and have

time to play with toys. This will run from 9:30-11a.m. when the school reopens until May 26th

and is best enjoyed by children age 2-5 years old.

All Aboard the Friendship is a program for 4 and 5 year old children starting kindergarten in the

fall. We will have fun learning about being a good friend, expressing our feelings, taking turns

and developing problem solving skills. We will read, sing, create art, enjoy a snack and play with

our new friends. This program runs from 1-2:30p.m. April 21st - May 26th, if school reopens.

If you’d like to register for a Kinderlinks program or be on the mailing list

please call 204-669-4043 or email [email protected] I hope to see you

at a preschool program this spring!

I’d like to thank all of the families who came to our family craft night on

March 4th. We had over 75 children come and create 4 different crafts this

year. We made stress balls, a crab, finger puppet aliens and Forky (from Toy

Story 4) and everyone had a great time! We had 20 ambassadors help with

event, setting up, handing out snack, helping at craft stations and cleaning up at the end of the

night. A BIG thank you to them!

Library Hello everyone from the library! The library has been busy getting new books ready for everyone to read. We have recently purchased many dual language books, including Cree , Spanish, Tagalog, Arabic, Chinese, and others. It’s always fun to see our own language in a book at school, or to learn some new words in another language! I have started using Minecraft Education as a teaching tool with some classes. It requires creativity, problem solving, at time’s collaboration, and a Growth Mindset! In one project students have been asked to create a pixelated book cover in a world I created. Students are super excited and engaged in these activities! We have also worked on Growth Mindset units with Grade 1-6 classes using Dash robots, Spheros, Keva Planks, 3Doodler pens, Merge Cube, LEGO, as well as coding Apps Scratch and Tynker. For I Love to Read month we had several activities for students. Over 20 students won a small prize after being drawn for completing the I Love to Read calendar. Congratulations to the many students who completed it! We also had a guest reader for each K-5 class as well as a presentation from Prairie Theatre Exchange of Robert Munsch’s The Paper Bag Princess. Middle years students enjoyed a performance from Manitoba Theatre for Young People a few months ago. We also had a Guess the Reader contest each morning for a week, featuring many staff members. Grade 6 & 8 students had guests from the University of Manitoba share coding and scientific knowledge with them. Grade 7’s will have a coding workshop soon as well. We hope everyone is reading some great books while at home! Remember that Tumblebooks is available for free through the Bernie Wolfe School website. Once the website is open, go to Library Services, next click the EY (early years) or MY (middle years) tab, tumble books or tumble readables will be available. There are also many websites that are offering books read aloud, sometimes by famous people. Here are a few: https://www.storylineonline.net/ https://www.cbc.ca/kidscbc2/watch/bookaboo

Music Notes – March 2020

During this time of suspended in-person classes, my teacher website has a multitude of ideas and music websites that students, and adults, can explore. Have you always wanted to learn to play the piano? Free lessons and music can be found on the Make Music Fun website, username MMFMarchApril – password school music. Are you up for the challenge of building your own instruments? Check out the Dallas Symphony Orchestra Kids page activities list for ideas! I’m posting (Ms Ferley’s) daily music challenge assignment and idea videos so check that out too! https://staff.retsd.mb.ca/public/nvsw24lilr5go6lhoz2xk/Pages/default.aspx#/=

Music doesn’t need the internet! Here are some ideas for just you - Sing your favourite song!

- Share your favourite dance by teaching it to someone in your home

- Sit silently for a few minutes and write down every sound you hear (or take a walk around your home, pause,

and write down the sounds you hear). Classify the sounds:

o High or Low

o Loud or Quiet

o Person-made or Natural

o Fast or Slow

- Try to create your own instrument

- Interview a family member about their musical background and interest

o What is their favourite song right now and why?

o What instrument do they play?

o What does music mean to them?

o Who are their favourite musicians?

- Listening to a piece of music and draw or write how it made you feel

- Compose your own song! Can be rhythm only or melody and words too (a new school song?)

- Create, Sing, Move, and Play!

We will also be celebrating Music Monday on Monday, May 4 at 1 p.m., online or in person!

At the beginning of March, the grade 1/2 classes attended “Wall to Wall Percussion” at the Centennial Concert Hall with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. The students loved the variety of music and the actor, songs, and the instruments! Keep making music! Stay positive and let me know how it’s going [email protected] Ms. Ferley

Physical Education News It has been a busy start to the new year in the Bernie Wolfe Physical Education Program. We give a huge thanks to Dylan Mozdzen for stepping in and taking over the 3-5 physical education classes for Mrs. Kjernisted. After Spring break, Mrs. Kjernisted will be returning to her job, and we are excited to announce that Mr. Mozdzen will be teaching Kindergarten at BWS until the end of the year.

Early Years News It has been a tumbling time in the Bernie Wolfe Physical Education program the past couple months in the early years program. Students from K-5 have been learning a variety of gymnastics skills. Grade 3-5 tumble club students were working very hard from learning the creative routine with Ms. Chin to practicing our skills every second lunch hour with Ms. Chin, Mr. Mozdzen and Ms. Vanalstyne. Sadly, like many events that students were practicing for, the Tumbling Rally event is cancelled for the year. Students will still have the opportunity to showcase their skills at an upcoming assembly once we return. We hope that students are equally excited for Handball, Basketball and Track and Field! Those events will occur in May and June.

Middle Years News In the Middle Years, basketball season is finally over. Students had the opportunity to learn the rules and the basic movement skills of basketball in class. Students who wanted to go a step further were invited to come play on the teams that competed divisionally. The BWS teams were very successful in grades 7 and 8, for both boys and girls. The grade 6 teams practiced, but like the Tumbling Rally, their tournament was cancelled. The Basketball unit was followed by the highly anticipated dance unit. In the dance unit, students learned a few traditional dances, as well as some new ones. The unit finished with students designing their own TikTok dances. The 8th graders who are interested will have the opportunity to present their dances during a pep rally once we return. After spring break, students will return to begin a badminton unit. The gym will be super busy for the rest of the year!

BWS Competitive Girls Basketball News

The Bernie Wolfe Competitive Girls Basketball Team had a terrific season this year. From the time when our season began in December until our last game in March, we are amazed at the progress the team made! The girls have shown growth in their skill development, sportsmanship and team play throughout the season. The team participated in one tournament this year, at Lockport School on February 28th-29th. They faced some tough opposition but ended the tournament with a big win. We would like to thank the parents and guardians for all your support as well as for helping to transport the girls to our games and tournament! Finally, we would like to thank our players for all their hard work this season as well as wish them luck with their future athletic endeavours! Mrs. McOmber & Mr. Hunter

BWS Competitive Boys Basketball News

Congratulations to the Grade 7/8 Boys Competitive Basketball team on a fantastic season! They demonstrated an amazing amount of hard work, dedication, and sportsmanship to each other, their opponents, and the coaches. Mr. Bugera, Mr. Partaker, Mr. Jimmy, and Coach Dalton are so proud of how well the boys represented Bernie Wolfe at all their games this season!

The boys played their regular RETSD league games on Tuesday nights as well as two different tournaments; one at Valley Gardens, and one at Lockport School. They won the B-side of the Valley Gardens tournament and placed 3rd in the Lockport tournament. A special congratulations also goes out to Wilson who won the 3-point competition at the Lockport tournament. It was also exciting for the players this year as they sported the brand new Bernie Wolfe Blazers jerseys; a first for our school!

With so much potential for these players, we look forward to seeing what these players will do in the years to come. Keep up the hard work!

Parent Advisory Council (PAC) News…

PAC has been busy, and we would love to bring you up to speed on what we’ve been up

to.

In February we gifted our hardworking administration, teachers, EAs and staff with a “A

Week of Treats”. To show our appreciation for all they do for our students, these fine people

were treated to different snacks that were available in the staff room each day.

We were very happy to sponsor the second Family Movie Night of the school year, as well

as Family Craft Night. These evenings were put on by our terrific Community Connector,

with help from our school’s Ambassadors. Both events were great successes.

On April 21st we hope to welcome you to join us at our annual Family Fun Night. In addition

to great music, and the canteen sponsored by the Grade 8 Farewell students, you can also

look forward to the new bouncers we brought in last year, face-painting, and games. It is

going to be one great night!

We have continued to have great success with our monthly pizza lunch fundraisers and

really appreciate the support from parents, students, and staff. We have decided that the

upcoming May pizza lunch, that will coincide with the school’s walk-a-thon, will dedicate its

profits to the event. The funds raised through this experience go a long way to help fund

numerous school activities.

On November 21st Bernie Wolfe School will be hosting a winter handmade and bake sale in

our school gymnasium. This new event will be a fundraiser for PAC. If you would like to

purchase a table, please visit the school website for more information. Please be sure to

mark this date on your calendar and be sure to come and support our school community.

We are always looking for more parent involvement. If you are interested in supporting

Bernie Wolfe School, we would love to see you at our next meeting. We meet to discuss

numerous issues such as school events, the lunch program and community connector

initiatives, just to name a few. Please join us the first Tuesday of the month in the library at

the school. Please check out our bulletin board in the hallway for PAC updates.

The Kid From Monte Cristo Edmond Dantes is the most popular 8th grader at Marseilles High. He is an +A student, captain of the basketball team and is dating the most beautiful girl in school. Unfortunately, not everyone is so impressed with Edmond. When fellow classmates Danielle, Chad and Fernando accuse Edmond of cheating on his French assignments, he is thrown in detention indefinitely! Luckily, there are some pretty unique students in detention who help Edmond escape. Fuelled by his desire for revenge, Edmond disguises himself as a new student "Chris M." and works to bring down everyone who wronged him. This is a classic tale of intrigue, adventure, revenge, and mur- well no murder, this is after all a middle school play! Based on the novel, The Counte of Monte Cristo, by Alexandre Dumas, this contemporary comedy will keep you laughing right through summer holidays! Note: We had hoped to present this show at the end of April, however due to current health concerns, we will push our debut back into May. If you are in the show and brought your script home, please work on memorizing your lines so that when we get back to school, we can start rehearsing again! If you forgot your script at school, e-mail Miss Lazar for a pdf copy at [email protected].

We Need Your Help!

It is not unusual for head lice to be present in schools. Lice are very common, and

anyone can get them, though they usually affect children. Lice do not spread disease

and having head lice is not a sign of uncleanliness or poor hygiene. If you receive an

email indicating lice was present in your child’s classroom, we ask that you check

your child’s head every day for 2 weeks. The best chance to control lice is to catch it

early and to treat it, before it can continue to spread. We thank you, in advance, for

your cooperation.
