As third generation owners of Young's Tire and Auto, brothers Rob and Greg Young carry on a tradition of courteous and honest service.

Named "Best Tire Store" in The Daily Citizen's annual "Best of the Best" competition, Young's attributes its long suc-cess to the way it treats customers.

"If your grandmother comes in, our employees are going to treat her just like they would their own mother or grand-mother," Rob said.

Rob and Greg's uncle, D.D. Young Jr., told a story to illus-trate the store's level of service.

"Three or four years ago, the store got a letter from a lady who said we had helped her when she was traveling and had car trouble," D.D. said. "She wanted to thank us. But none of us could remember who she was because that situation wasn't anything special. We treated her just like we treat anybody."

Gene Martin, one of Young's three store managers, gave an example of how the company strives to remain honest and dependable.

"A lady came in one time and said she needed work on her vehicle," Martin said. "But, in truth, she didn't. So, we told her that. Honesty is the best policy."

According to Martin, the company's customers are more than customers — they're friends.

"A lot of customers have lived in town a long time, and we know them by name," he said.

The historyAs the oldest independent tire dealer in Arkansas, Young's

Tire and Auto got its start in August of 1938 when D.D. Young Sr. and his wife, Marguerite, opened Easy Pay Tire Store on the corner of Arch and Gum streets in downtown Searcy.

"My dad worked for Sinclair Oil Company and traveled across the state," D.D. Jr. said. "His brother had Sinclair Tire and Service Center on Broadway Street in Little Rock.

Ben Tilley did not know anything about tires when he became a man-ager at Young's Tire and Auto, but

what he lacked in experience, he made up for in customer service.

Chosen as "Best Auto Service Manager" in The Daily Citizen's annual "Best of the Best" competition, Tilley has worked for Young's for seven years.

From the time Tilley was 8 years old to the time he entered college, Tilley worked in a fiberglass factory making fiberglass parts.

"I grew up in the fiberglass business, and I knew nothing about tires when I got into this business," he said. "All my training was on-the-job. The boys would show me things to give me a better understanding of car mechanics."

Tilley said working as a manager at Young's is rewarding.

"I get to help people," he said. "I try to treat people how I'd want someone to treat my mother or my wife.

"You learn so much about people when they come in to the store by getting to talk to them. I love knowing customers by name

and seeing them out around town and recognizing them."

The job is not without challenges, he said."There are always some difficulties," he said.

"Any time you're dealing with people, there's going to be some sort of issues because of personality clashes. But I always say that 2 percent of people are going to be unhappy no matter what."

Regarding dealing with fellow employees, Tilley said they work well together.

"I've had a good crew for a while now, so I hope they'll all stay together and not go anywhere," he said.

Tilley related two of the most interesting experi-ences he has had working as a manager at Young's Tire and Auto on Race Avenue.

"One time, we had a car run through the front glass because the breaks weren't working," he said. "Luckily, no one was hurt, but it did cause damage to the building. It was one of the oddest things I've ever seen."

Another time, a copperhead was found inside a vehicle that mechanics were repairing.

"We told the lady [who owned the car] that we found something in her car and we weren't giving it back," he said. "Then, when we told her what it was, she said we could keep it."

Concerning being chosen as "Best Auto Service Manager," Tilley said he believes the honor is a result of how he and the other employees treat customers.

"Hopefully, we were chosen because of our ser-vice and how we treat people," he said.

Working at Young's was and is still Tilley's first job out of college.

Tilley graduated from Arkansas Tech in 2004 with a degree in history and political science. College is where he met his wife, Kim.

"We met the first day of college, and we've been together ever since," Tilley said. "We were down for freshman orientation, and my roommate had a friend from another town, and Kim happened to be her roommate.

"I asked her to marry me nine months after we met, and we got married a year-and-a-half after we met."

The Tilleys have been married 10 years and have two sons — Ty, 5, and Logan, 3.

Tilley said he and his sons love baseball, hunting and fishing.

"The boys love going fishing with me if I get to go," he said. "My son will sit on the porch and prac-tice casting out into the yard."

In addition to being store manager for Young's, Tilley is a t-ball coach and a deacon at Park Avenue Baptist Church.

"Dad wanted to open a tire store some-where in the state, and A.J. Stephens of First Security Bank talked him into coming to Searcy.

"Our family is one of the bank's oldest customers."

In October of 1965, the business moved to a larger facility at 107 N. Gum and became Young's Wholesale Tire Co., with D.D. Jr. and his brother, Bob, stepping in to run the family business.

"My mother died when I was in college, and my dad couldn't handle the business without her," D.D. Jr. said.

"He was the salesman, and she was the manager. So, my brother, Bob, and I came in to help."

D.D. Jr. retired in 1999, bringing on the company's third generational expansion. Rob and Greg joined their father, Bob, to form Young's Tire and Auto.

The family opened a flagship store in May of 2000 at 511 S. Main Street in Searcy with 10 service bays and 20,000 square feet

of floor space.In 2005, the Youngs opened a store at 20

Nalley Drive on Highway 321 in Cabot, and then three years ago, they opened another location at 1523 E. Race Avenue in Searcy.

About the companyIn addition to selling and working with

tires, Young's Tire and Auto offers a variety of auto services, including suspension, air conditioning, brakes and front-end work. The company also provides 24-hour roadside service.

Between its three locations, Young's employs around 30 people.

Store managers are Gene Martin, Ben Tilley and Furlen Webb at the Main Street, Race Avenue and Cabot locations, respec-tively.

Webb also works as operations manager and has been with the company for more than 30 years.

"We have really good employees and managers, some of whom have been here 30

years," Rob said."We're a big family," Martin said. "I've

been here five years, and I'm still kind of a new guy.

"Johnny has been here 20 years, Paul has been here 17 years, and Mike has been here about 30 years."

Martin said the technicians at the Main Street location have more than 50 years of combined experience.

"That explains why they do alignments so well," he said. "They're really on top of things.

"Yesterday, they found a nail in a tire that the owner of the car didn't even know about."

Business challengesAccording to the Youngs, their company

has never faced any devastating losses."We've just experienced the normal

growth difficulties that go with expansion," D.D. Jr. said.

However, the store did face a tough time

during World War II, when rubber was being rationed.

"They had great trouble getting rubber for tires during World War II," Rob said. "People had to wait a while sometimes to get their tires from the store, but my grandfather was able to find a way to get them somehow."

The fourth generationBoth married with children, Rob and

Greg hope to continue the family business for many more years.

Rob and his wife, Nancy, have two chil-dren: Summer, 17, and Brayton, 15.

Greg's wife is Kim, and his children are Madison, 13, and Marlee, 10. His step-chil-dren are Trent Dix, 22, and Samantha Dix, 14.

Rob explained the family's aspirations for the future of the company.

"We hope to continue to provide jobs and good service to Searcy and Cabot, and maybe even to other places," he said. "We just want to continue to grow."

"Dad wanted to open a tire store some-where in the state, and A.J. Stephens of First Security Bank talked him into coming to Searcy.

"Our family is one of the bank's oldest customers."

In October of 1965, the business moved to a larger facility at 107 N. Gum and became Young's Wholesale Tire Co., with D.D. Jr. and his brother, Bob, stepping in to run the family business.

"My mother died when I was in college, and my dad couldn't handle the business without her," D.D. Jr. said.

"He was the salesman, and she was the manager. So, my brother, Bob, and I came in to help."

D.D. Jr. retired in 1999, bringing on the company's third generational expansion. Rob and Greg joined their father, Bob, to form Young's Tire and Auto.

The family opened a flagship store in May of 2000 at 511 S. Main Street in Searcy with 10 service bays and 20,000 square feet

of floor space.In 2005, the Youngs opened a store at 20

Nalley Drive on Highway 321 in Cabot, and then three years ago, they opened another location at 1523 E. Race Avenue in Searcy.

About the companyIn addition to selling and working with

tires, Young's Tire and Auto offers a variety of auto services, including suspension, air conditioning, brakes and front-end work. The company also provides 24-hour roadside service.

Between its three locations, Young's employs around 30 people.

Store managers are Gene Martin, Ben Tilley and Furlen Webb at the Main Street, Race Avenue and Cabot locations, respec-tively.

Webb also works as operations manager and has been with the company for more than 30 years.

"We have really good employees and managers, some of whom have been here 30

years," Rob said."We're a big family," Martin said. "I've

been here five years, and I'm still kind of a new guy.

"Johnny has been here 20 years, Paul has been here 17 years, and Mike has been here about 30 years."

Martin said the technicians at the Main Street location have more than 50 years of combined experience.

"That explains why they do alignments so well," he said. "They're really on top of things.

"Yesterday, they found a nail in a tire that the owner of the car didn't even know about."

Business challengesAccording to the Youngs, their company

has never faced any devastating losses."We've just experienced the normal

growth difficulties that go with expansion," D.D. Jr. said.

However, the store did face a tough time

during World War II, when rubber was being rationed.

"They had great trouble getting rubber for tires during World War II," Rob said. "People had to wait a while sometimes to get their tires from the store, but my grandfather was able to find a way to get them somehow."

The fourth generationBoth married with children, Rob and

Greg hope to continue the family business for many more years.

Rob and his wife, Nancy, have two chil-dren: Summer, 17, and Brayton, 15.

Greg's wife is Kim, and his children are Madison, 13, and Marlee, 10. His step-chil-dren are Trent Dix, 22, and Samantha Dix, 14.

Rob explained the family's aspirations for the future of the company.

"We hope to continue to provide jobs and good service to Searcy and Cabot, and maybe even to other places," he said. "We just want to continue to grow."

and seeing them out around town and recognizing them."

The job is not without challenges, he said."There are always some difficulties," he said.

"Any time you're dealing with people, there's going to be some sort of issues because of personality clashes. But I always say that 2 percent of people are going to be unhappy no matter what."

Regarding dealing with fellow employees, Tilley said they work well together.

"I've had a good crew for a while now, so I hope they'll all stay together and not go anywhere," he said.

Tilley related two of the most interesting experi-ences he has had working as a manager at Young's Tire and Auto on Race Avenue.

"One time, we had a car run through the front glass because the breaks weren't working," he said. "Luckily, no one was hurt, but it did cause damage to the building. It was one of the oddest things I've ever seen."

Another time, a copperhead was found inside a vehicle that mechanics were repairing.

"We told the lady [who owned the car] that we found something in her car and we weren't giving it back," he said. "Then, when we told her what it was, she said we could keep it."

Concerning being chosen as "Best Auto Service Manager," Tilley said he believes the honor is a result of how he and the other employees treat customers.

"Hopefully, we were chosen because of our ser-vice and how we treat people," he said.

Working at Young's was and is still Tilley's first job out of college.

Tilley graduated from Arkansas Tech in 2004 with a degree in history and political science. College is where he met his wife, Kim.

"We met the first day of college, and we've been together ever since," Tilley said. "We were down for freshman orientation, and my roommate had a friend from another town, and Kim happened to be her roommate.

"I asked her to marry me nine months after we met, and we got married a year-and-a-half after we met."

The Tilleys have been married 10 years and have two sons — Ty, 5, and Logan, 3.

Tilley said he and his sons love baseball, hunting and fishing.

"The boys love going fishing with me if I get to go," he said. "My son will sit on the porch and prac-tice casting out into the yard."

In addition to being store manager for Young's, Tilley is a t-ball coach and a deacon at Park Avenue Baptist Church.

Ben Tilley named ’Best Auto Service Manager’By Marisa [email protected]

Ben Tilley did not know anything about tires when he became a man-ager at Young's Tire and Auto, but

what he lacked in experience, he made up for in customer service.

Chosen as "Best Auto Service Manager" in The Daily Citizen's annual "Best of the Best" competition, Tilley has worked for Young's for seven years.

From the time Tilley was 8 years old to the time he entered college, Tilley worked in a fiberglass factory making fiberglass parts.

"I grew up in the fiberglass business, and I knew nothing about tires when I got into this business," he said. "All my training was on-the-job. The boys would show me things to give me a better understanding of car mechanics."

Tilley said working as a manager at Young's is rewarding.

"I get to help people," he said. "I try to treat people how I'd want someone to treat my mother or my wife.

"You learn so much about people when they come in to the store by getting to talk to them. I love knowing customers by name

As third generation owners of Young's Tire and Auto, brothers Rob and Greg Young carry on a tradition of courteous and honest service.

Named "Best Tire Store" in The Daily Citizen's annual "Best of the Best" competition, Young's attributes its long suc-cess to the way it treats customers.

"If your grandmother comes in, our employees are going to treat her just like they would their own mother or grand-mother," Rob said.

Rob and Greg's uncle, D.D. Young Jr., told a story to illus-trate the store's level of service.

"Three or four years ago, the store got a letter from a lady who said we had helped her when she was traveling and had car trouble," D.D. said. "She wanted to thank us. But none of us could remember who she was because that situation wasn't anything special. We treated her just like we treat anybody."

Gene Martin, one of Young's three store managers, gave an example of how the company strives to remain honest and dependable.

"A lady came in one time and said she needed work on her vehicle," Martin said. "But, in truth, she didn't. So, we told her that. Honesty is the best policy."

According to Martin, the company's customers are more than customers — they're friends.

"A lot of customers have lived in town a long time, and we know them by name," he said.

The historyAs the oldest independent tire dealer in Arkansas, Young's

Tire and Auto got its start in August of 1938 when D.D. Young Sr. and his wife, Marguerite, opened Easy Pay Tire Store on the corner of Arch and Gum streets in downtown Searcy.

"My dad worked for Sinclair Oil Company and traveled across the state," D.D. Jr. said. "His brother had Sinclair Tire and Service Center on Broadway Street in Little Rock.
