Have you ever experienced difficulty accessing a Welsh language service? Been treated badly for trying to speak Welsh? Had trouble getting Welsh medium education for your children?

Cymdeithas is a group of people who campaign positively for the rights of people in Wales to use the language.

Yn 1962, dywedodd Saunders Lewis fod angen chwyldro er mwyn achub yr iaith Gymraeg. Mae’r Gymdeithas wedi bod ar flaen y gad yn arwain y chwyldro hwnnw drwy ymgyrchu dros arwyddion ffyrdd dwyieithog, sianel deledu Gymraeg a deddfau iaith – ac rydyn ni dal wrthi.

Mae gan y mudiad syniadau blaengar ar nifer o feysydd sy’n effeithio ar y Gymraeg, er enghraifft, hawliau ieithyddol, addysg, tai i bobl leol a chynllunio, a’r cyfryngau.

In 1962, Saunders Lewis said there had to be a revolution in order to save the Welsh language. For 50 years Cymdeithas have been leading that revolution by campaigning for Welsh road signs, a Welsh language TV channel and various Welsh Language Acts.

Cymdeithas has a number of progressive policies on Language Rights, Education, Housing and Planning, and the Media.

Ond mae’r Gymraeg yn ddiogel erbyn hyn?

Mae sefyllfa’r Gymraeg wedi cryfhau dros y blynyddoedd mewn rhai meysydd - mae’n wir - ond mae cymaint o ffactorau fel effaith globaleiddio, toriadau mewn gwariant cyhoeddus a dirywiad cymunedau Cymraeg yn bygwth yr iaith. Er mwyn iddi fod yn iaith fyw rhaid i ni ei defnyddio ym mhob rhan o’n bywydau; yn iaith naturiol yn ein cymunedau, ar y we, yn y siop, yn gyfrwng i’n haddysg, radio a theledu.

Isn’t the Welsh Language safe now?

It’s true, the language has strengthened over the years in some ways, but many factors such as the effect of globalisation, public spending cuts and the decline of Welsh language communities still threaten the language. For it to be a living language we have to use it in all aspects of life; the natural language of our communities, on the internet, in shops, education, radio and television.

Page 8: Beth yw Cymdeithas yr Iaith? | What is Cymdeithas yr Iaith?

Ond dydw i ddim yn un i brotestio...

Wrth gwrs dy fod di! Nid protestio ar y strydoedd a wnawn ni drwy’r amser. Hanfod y Gymdeithas yw gweithredu yn ôl y dull di-drais; gall hyn fod yn unrhywbeth o ysgrifennu llythyr am ddiffyg gwasanaethCymraeg neu gasglu llofnodion ar ddeiseb hyd at brotestio neu hyd yn oed baentio sloganau. Rydym ni’n annog aelodau i helpu mewn unrhyw ffordd gallant a gweld sut gallan nhw ddatblygu eu sgiliau wrth ymgyrchu.

Page 9: Beth yw Cymdeithas yr Iaith? | What is Cymdeithas yr Iaith?

But I’m not one for protesting...

But you are! It isn’t all about protesting on thestreets. Cymdeithas supports non-violent direct action; this could mean anything from writing a letter about the lack of a Welsh language service or collecting names on a petition to protesting and even painting slogans. Cymdeithas encourages members to contribute what they can - the emphasis is put on encouraging and supporting ourmembers to develop their given skills.

Hawliau Ieithyddol

Mae’r Gymraeg yn iaith swyddogol yng Nghymru ond gyda statws swyddogol mae angen hawliau ieithyddol i’r unigolyn. Nid oes unrhyw orfodaeth ar gwmnïau fel Tesco a McDonalds i ddarparu gwasanaeth Gymraeg a gwasanaethau eilradd fydd gyda ni nes bod deddf yn mynnu fod hyn yn newidByddwn yn parhau i frwydro dros Ddeddf Iaith grefsydd yn cynnwys hawliau i’r unigolyn.

Page 17: Beth yw Cymdeithas yr Iaith? | What is Cymdeithas yr Iaith?

Language Rights

The Welsh language is an official language in Wales. But we still needs to fight to ensure linguistic rights for the individual. There’s no requirement for giant companies such as Tesco and McDonalds to provide any sort of Welsh language service and this will only change with legislation. We will continue to campaign for a strong Welsh language law that includes linguistic rights for the individual.

Page 18: Beth yw Cymdeithas yr Iaith? | What is Cymdeithas yr Iaith?

Addysg

Dylai fod gan bawb yr hawl i dderbyn addysg Gymraeg yn lleol. Mae Cymdeithas yr Iaith yn ymgyrchu dros ddyfodol ysgolion pentrefol, dros gynyddu’r ddarpariaeth Gymraeg mewn colegau addysg bellach a thrwy alw am addysg gyfrwng Gymraeg lleol o’r blynyddoedd cynnar hyd at ysgol uwchradd.

Page 19: Beth yw Cymdeithas yr Iaith? | What is Cymdeithas yr Iaith?

Education

Everybody should have the right to receive Welsh medium education locally. Cymdeithas campaigns for the future of village schools, increasing Welsh language provision in colleges and calls for local Welsh medium education from early years through to secondary school.

Cymunedau Cynaliadwy

Mae’r Gymraeg yn edwino fel iaith gymunedol yn enwedig yn ei chadarnleoedd traddodiadol. Mae yna sawl rheswm tu ôl i’r patrwm hwn. Mae’r Gymdeithas yn galw am newidiadau economaidd ac yn y farchnad dai er mwyn gwrth-droi’r dirywiad hwn. Un o’n galwadau ydy Deddf Eiddo fyddai’n galluogi pobl i aros yn eu cymunedau a sicrhau fod digon o dai fforddiadwy ar gael i’w rhentu ac i’w prynu gan roi cymorth ychwanegol i brynwyr tro cyntaf.

Sustainable Communities

The Welsh language is in decline as a community language, especially in its traditional heartlands. There are many reasons for this,. We campaign for economic and housing market changes to reverse this decline. One of our demands is for a Property Act which would help people stay in their communities by ensuring there are enough affordable homes to buy and rent and by supporting first time buyers.

Page 22: Beth yw Cymdeithas yr Iaith? | What is Cymdeithas yr Iaith?

Cyfryngau

Cred Cymdeithas yr Iaith bod y cyfryngau modern gan gynnwys teledu, radio a’r we yn holl bwysig er mwyn cael dyfodol llewyrchus i’r iaith Gymraeg. Rydym yn pwyso am wasanaethau Cymraeg ar orsafoedd radio lleol, annibyniaeth a chyllido teg i’n sianel deledu Gymraeg a phresenoldeb cryf ar y we.

Page 23: Beth yw Cymdeithas yr Iaith? | What is Cymdeithas yr Iaith?

Media

Cymdeithas believe that modern media, includingtelevision, radio and the internet are importantin creating a prosperous future for the Welshlanguage. We campaign for a proper and fair footing within the media by pressing for Welsh language services on local radio, independence and sufficient funding for our Welsh language TV channel and a strong presence on the internet.
