Five years ago, the Big Lake School Board asked the community to pass a referendum that would provide necessary funding to sustain student programs and class sizes. At that time, our district’s operating levy was at $7 per pupil, which was less than one percent of the state average of $827 per pupil.

Despite needing to dramatically increase operating levy revenues to be around the state average, we recognized our community was facing uncertain economic times, so we only asked for a $475-per-pupil operating levy. This set the district’s operating levy at 58 percent of the state average.

As a school board, we promised the community that, if the levy passed, we would ensure fiscal responsibility and that the district would maintain its current programs and class sizes. We also informed the community we would need to come back in five years to ask for additional operating revenue.

The school board is happy to report that Big Lake Schools has fulfilled its 2009 referendum promise. Not only did the district maintain class sizes and student programs, it was able to increase offerings by aligning and refiningstaffingandschedules.

By making these adjustments, the district has gained impressive progress in career and college ready offerings, closing the achievement gap and technology integration.

BigLakeSchools’progressoverthepastfiveyears proves it has been a good steward of our community’s tax dollars.

Looking Back...

Page 5: Big Lake Community Education Fall 2014 Catalog

...Moving ForwardWhile Big Lake Schools has made tremendous improvements thanks to the community’s support of the last referendum, in order to maintain the progress we have made, we again need the full support of the Big Lake community.

Not only do we continue to remain one of the lowest locally-funded districtsinthearea, butinflationaryexpenses continue to grow more rapidly than revenues causing the district to deficit spend.

If Big Lake Schools doesn’t receive additional funding soon, the progress we have made will be in jeopardy.

In order to maintain the progress Big Lake Schools hasmadeoverthepastfiveyears, theSchoolBoardvoted unanimously to place two school funding questions on the November 4 ballot:

1. An operating levy to maintain progress in student programming & technology

2. An add’l operating levy to improve school programs & facilities

We ask that you take time to learn about this levy referendum in the coming months. We are hopeful that you will agree with us that this levy is in the best interest of our community and our children.

Sincerely,

Big Lake School Board Tim Hayes, Chair Tom Pietrzak, Vice Chair Mark Hedstrom, Clerk

Tony Scales, Treasurer Dan Nygaard, Director Amber Sixberry, Director

ECFE|Early ChildhoodMeet lifelong friends,

while learning, playing and growing!

What exactly is ECFE?ECFE stands for Early Childhood Family Education, and it’s a special place for you and your young child. It’s a place where you can make friends with other parents who have children the same age as yours, and who share the same concerns, joys and challenges that you do. It’s a place where your child has the opportunity to play with other children in a safe, supportive environment just right for his or her age. It’s a place where caring staff who understand children and parenting come together with families to support parents and children on their journey.

What kinds of activities take place during an ECFE class? There are two kinds of ECFE classes:

❤ Non-Separating Classes

_ Separating Classes

Look for these symbols on each class to know what type of class it is.

Non-Separating Classes: Parents and children remain in an ECFE classroom together. All infant classes are non-separating.

Separating Classes: Parents and children begin and end the class together, but spend time apart during the middle.

What happens in separating classes? The following format takes place:1. Parent-Child Time: Thefirst30-40minutesof each class is playtime. An ECFE teacher will arrange the classroom with learning areas that include art, table activities, dramatic play, blocks and cars, sensory, manipulatives and more! Follow your child’s lead as you enjoy activities that encourage parents and children to play together!

2. Circle Time: Parents, children and teachers join together to sing songs, read stories or enjoy music and movement activities.

3. Snack Time: Parents separate for parent discussion at this time.

4. Time for Parents: Parents separate into their own discussion group in a nearby room, and a licensed parent educator leads them in a discussion covering many aspects of raising children. Parents are encouraged to bring ideas to class.

5. Time for Children: While parents are in their discussion group, children stay in the classroom with a licensed early childrood teacher. Together they enjoy child-directed, free choice activities, like play dough, art, or games with peers.

6. Closing: Parents and children come together again for a closing circle as they say good bye, for now, to new friends.

“Follow Along Program”For infants and children up to 48 months of age

Babies and young children grow and learn at their own rate. The Follow Along Program can help you know if your child is playing, talking, growing, moving, and behaving similar to other children of the same age. Some children may need special help to grow up healthy and learn skills such as sitting, walking, or talking. The this program can help you know if this is true for your child.

WHAT IS THE FOLLOW ALONG PROGRAM?• A good way to learn about your child’s health and

development.• A fun way to get ideas about “what to teach” and

“at what age” to teach it.• A simple way to ask questions about how your

child is hearing, moving, seeing, playing, talking, learning, growing, and acting.

• Aneasywaytofindoutaboutotherservicesyoumay want for your child.

HOW DOES THE PROGRAM WORK?• A professional, most often a nurse, may visit with

youtotellyoumoreabouttheprogramandfindoutmore about your child.

• And you will be asked to sign a permission form.• Questionnaires are mailed to you when your child

reaches different ages such as 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 30, and 36 months old. Each questionnaire asks how your child is growing, playing, talking, moving, and acting.

• Sheets with fun activities for you to do with your child or other age appropriate items are also sent

• The results of the questionnaires will be shared with you. If there are any concerns, a nurse or other professional from the Follow

• Along program will get in touch with you. Together, you can talk about choices for further evaluation or early help services.

• After your child is 36 months old, you will get information about the next step, Early Childhood Screening.

IS THERE A COST?No. There is no cost to you.
