THE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST

Today as we celebrate the Feast of Corpus Christi or the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ, I would like to share with you the words of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI from his Angelus address on June 14th, 2009 (On the Feast of Corpus Christi) which I think so beautifully explains this great Feast day and invites us to refl ect further on the Love of God.

Dear Brothers and Sisters, Corpus Christi, the feast of the Eucharist in which the Sacrament of the Body of the Lord is solemnly carried in procession, is being celebrated today in various countries, including Italy. What does this feast day mean to us? It does not make us think of the liturgical aspect alone; actually, Corpus Christi is a day that involves the cosmic dimension, the heavens and the earth. It calls to mind fi rst of all at least in our hemisphere this season which is so beautiful and fragrant, in which Spring is already turning into Summer, the sun is high in the sky and the wheat is ripening in the fi elds. The Church’s feasts like the Jewish feasts are associated with the phases of the solar year, the sowing and the reaping. This is particularly evident in today’s Solemnity, at the heart of which is the sign of bread, a fruit of the earth and of Heaven. The Eucharistic Bread is thus a visible sign of the One in whom Heaven and earth, God and man, became one. And this shows that the relationship with the seasons is not something merely external to the liturgical year.

The Solemnity of Corpus Christi is closely linked to Easter and Pentecost: the death and Resurrection of Jesus and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit are its premises. Furthermore, it is directly linked to the Feast of the Trinity that was celebrated last Sunday. It is only because God himself is relationship that there can be a relationship with him; and only because he is love can he love and be loved. Thus, Corpus Christi is a manifestation of God, an attestation that God is love. This feast speaks to us in a unique and special way of divine love, of what it is and of what it does. It tells us, for example, that it is regenerated in self-giving, that it is received in self-giving, that it is never lacking nor can it be consumed as a hymn by St Thomas Aquinas sings: “nec sumptus consumitur”. Love transforms all things and we therefore understand that the center of today’s Feast of Corpus Christi is the mystery of transubstantiation, a sign of Jesus Christ who transforms the world. Looking at him and worshipping him, we say: “yes, love exists and because it exists things can change for the better and we can hope”. It is hope that comes from Christ’s love which gives us the strength to live and to deal with diffi culties. For this reason let us sing as we carry the Most Holy Sacrament in procession; let us sing and praise God who revealed himself concealing himself in the sign of the Bread broken. We are all in need of this Bread, as the journey to freedom, justice and peace is long and diffi cult.

We can imagine with what great faith and love Our Lady must have received and adored the Blessed Eucharist in her heart! For her it must have been every time like reliving the whole mystery of her Son Jesus: from his Conception to his Resurrection. The “Woman of the Eucharist”, my venerable and beloved Predecessor John Paul II called her. Let us learn from her to renew our communion with the Body of Christ ceaselessly so that we may love one another as he loved us.

EL CUERPO Y LA SANGRE DE CRISTO

Hoy, que celebramos la Fiesta del Corpus Christi o la Solemnidad del Cuerpo y la Sangre de Cristo, me gustaría compartir con ustedes las palabras del Papa Emérito Benedicto XVI de su discurso en el Ángelus el 14 de junio de 2009 (En la Fiesta del Corpus Christi ) que creo que explica muy bien este gran día de fi esta y nos invita a refl exionar más sobre el Amor de Dios.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas: Se celebra hoy en varios países, entre los cuales Italia, el Corpus Christi, la fi esta de la Eucaristía, en la que el sacramento del Cuerpo del Señor se lleva solemnemente en procesión. ¿Qué signifi ca para nosotros esta fi esta? No sólo hace pensar en el aspecto litúrgico; en realidad, el Corpus Christi es un día que implica la dimensión cósmica, el cielo y la tierra. Evoca, ante todo —al menos en nuestro hemisferio— esta estación tan hermosa y perfumada en la que la primavera se transforma ya en verano, el sol brilla con fuerza en el cielo y en los campos madura el trigo. Las fi estas de la Iglesia, como las judías, siguen el ritmo del año solar, de la siembra y la cosecha. En particular, esto destaca en la solemnidad de hoy, en cuyo centro está el signo del pan, fruto de la tierra y del cielo. Por eso, el Pan eucarístico es el signo visible de Aquel en el que el cielo y la tierra, Dios y el hombre, han llegado a ser uno. Y esto muestra que la relación con las estaciones no es para el año litúrgico algo meramente exterior.

La solemnidad del Corpus Christi está íntimamente relacionada con la Pascua y con Pentecostés: la muerte y la resurrección de Jesús y la efusión del Espíritu Santo son sus presupuestos. Además, está inmediatamente unida a la fi esta de la Trinidad, celebrada el domingo pasado. Sólo porque Dios mismo es relación, puede existir relación con él; y sólo porque es amor, puede amar y ser amado. Así, el Corpus Christi es una manifestación de Dios, un testimonio de que Dios es amor.

De un modo único y peculiar, esta fi esta nos habla del amor divino, de lo que es y de lo que hace. Nos dice, por ejemplo, que se regenera al entregarse, se recibe al darse, no disminuye y no se consuma, como canta un himno de santo Tomás de Aquino: “nec sumptus consumitur”. El amor lo transforma todo y, por tanto, se comprende que en el centro de esta fi esta del Corpus Christi está el misterio de la transubstanciación, signo de Jesucristo que transforma el mundo. Al contemplarlo y adorarlo, decimos: sí, el amor existe, y, puesto que existe, las cosas pueden mejorar y nosotros podemos esperar. La esperanza que brota del amor de Cristo nos da la fuerza para vivir y afrontar las difi cultades. Por eso cantamos mientras llevamos en procesión el Santísimo Sacramento; cantamos y alabamos a Dios, que se ha revelado escondiéndose en el signo del pan partido. Todos tenemos necesidad de este Pan, porque es largo y fatigoso el camino hacia la libertad, la justicia y la paz.

Podemos imaginar con cuánta fe y amor la Virgen habrá recibido y adorado en su corazón la santa Eucaristía. Cada vez era para ella como revivir todo el misterio de su Hijo Jesús: desde la concepción hasta la resurrección. “Mujer eucarística” la llamó mi venerado y amado predecesor Juan Pablo II. Aprendamos de ella a renovar continuamente nuestra comunión con el Cuerpo de Cristo, para amarnos unos a otros como él nos amó.

Dearly Beloved Parishioners:

After the Governor’s new regulations for phase II, the Archbishop conference, and our local vicariate meeting, these are the new Phase II guidelines that have been adapted for Shepherd of the Valley for public Masses, liturgical events, and meeting of groups.

GENERALThe dispensation for the Sunday Mass and Holy Days of obligation remains in effect. No one is required or expected to attend Mass on the weekends during this time. There are plenty of opportunities to attend Mass during the weekdays. ▪ The new guidelines for Churches in counties approved for phase II are up to 250 people, but, for sanitation measures after each service and the 6 feet physical space permits Shepherd of the Valley is increasing our number of people attending from 50 to 170 per Mass. Attendees will be distributed around the Church’s pews and gray plastic chairs in the Chapel and the baptismal fount area. ▪ Starting this coming weekend (June 13 & 14), choirs and ministers will be reestablished on Saturdays, 5:00 pm English Mass and 7:00 pm Spanish Mass. On Sundays, we will have the 9:00 am English Mass and the 1:00 pm Spanish Mass. All ministers from 8:30 and 11:00 Masses are invited to alternate their service every other weekend during phase II. Also, there are daily Masses Monday through Friday at 6:00pm as it appears in the weekly Bulletin. ▪ The Sacrament of Confession is available one hour before weekend Masses and half hour before daily Masses or by appointment with one of the priests. ▪ Appropriate Social Distancing must be practiced at all times within the church, the chapel and meeting places (minimum of six feet apart with the exception of members of the same household). ▪ A face covering is required while attending Mass at Shepherd of the Valley Catholic Church, except for anyone with a health condition that prevents them from wearing one. ▪ Sign-ups (electronic, telephonic or present at the door if there is space available) will continue to be required for the primary purpose of ensuring

that the number of persons wishing to attend Mass does not exceed the number permitted for the available space. In the event of a COVID-19 exposure at a Mass, the sign-up information will be used for the secondary purpose of contact tracing, in cooperation with Oregon Health authorities. The ability to do tracing is a fundamental component of demonstrated readiness to reopen. The new guidance states that the sign-up information may be destroyed 60 days after the event. ▪ Signs will be posted warning persons with symptoms of illness not to enter parish buildings and to return home immediately. ▪ Anyone attending Mass does so at their own risk. Vulnerable, at-risk, and otherwise concerned persons should remain home. If you are sick, have symptoms, not feeling well, or feel uncomfortable please do not come you must remain home. If you were scheduled for a Mass, you can always call in and we will fi nd others to fi ll the spot. Those who have immune defi ciencies and the elderly are strongly encouraged to continue watching Mass from the safety of your own home, online with Facebook or on television. Thank You! REMEMBER! The dispensation is still in place. ▪ Masks and face coverings continue to be required for ministers distributing Holy Communion. ▪ Masses will continue to be livestreamed through Facebook live in phase II, as we have a limit up of 125 people attending each Mass. ▪ At this Point, parish group meetings such us Bible studies, prayer groups, Knights of Columbus, Choirs and others, are encouraged to continue using social media, like Zoom, Facebook, Google, etc., during this time. However, the parish is off ering the possibility to meet in our facilities, following these guidelines: 1.) In order to schedule a meeting, the offi ce needs to know in advance to put the meeting in the general calendar to avoid confl icts and to be able to provide the equipment needed for the cleaning. 2.) The leader of the group or someone designated by the group, needs to collect the contact information of all the members attending each meeting and summit a copy to the parish offi ce after the service or the following business day.

3.) The group itself or someone designated by group, needs to follow the cleaning procedure and clean and disinfect all the areas used during the meeting, including restrooms if they we used, general areas and doors. In order to facilitate the process of cleaning and disinfection, we will use the gray plastic chairs in the church, chapel, and parish hall. No exceptions granted at this point.

4.) For health concerns, no food or beverages will be allowed during these meetings. No exceptions granted at this point.

5.) Please, remember that the front door of the church will be open 1 hour before Mass on weekend and half hour before Mass during the week for confessions, adoration of our Lord Jesus Christ, who is always in the Tabernacle, Rosary, Divine Mercy or personal devotions before Mass.

▪ Masses and other sacraments such as Confi rmation and First Communion, Baptisms, Weddings, Anointing of the Sick, urgent confessions, and funerals will be addressed case by case and scheduled by the priests as the schedule allows, following the same recommendations above. ▪ If we do not have enough volunteers to cleanup general areas after each Mass, we will not be able to have as many Masses as scheduled. Volunteers can sign up as they would sign up for a Mass in the same place online at our website, on the same group page, but under a diff erent event named “Volunteer sign up” for Mass attendee sign up. If you have any questions, please contact Joyce Marks by phone or email. ▪ Keep in mind that this special schedule we are implementing for phase II may be adjusted or modifi ed to better serve our parishioners, or as restrictions are loosened. The parish will be notifi ed of the weekly schedule.

SIGN UP ▪ Those wishing to attend the Latin Mass at Sacred Heart may do so from any parish, but they must call Sacred Heart to sign up for the Latin Mass. ▪ Parish sign-up lists are primarily to facilitate sign-ups. Secondarily, they help the parish contact people in the event of a potential exposure at Mass or religious events. The lists are intended for internal use by the parish and must be maintained for a period of at least 60 days. A parish can ask the people who may have been exposed, to contact the county or other health

offi cials on their own. A parish will follow guidelines put forth by health offi cials regarding potential exposure. The parish may be asked by public health offi cials for the contact information, and there may be a requirement to give it for contact tracing. Therefore, anyone not comfortable with public offi cials potentially being given their name and contact information should refrain at this time from signing up and attending Mass. The Sunday obligation remains lifted.

▪ How Signup to Attend Mass: Those wanting to sign up for a Mass can do so online at shepherdcatholic.com or by calling the office at (541) 664-1050 between 12 noon and 3:00 PM, Monday through Friday. All members of the family need to be listed. A greeter at the door will have a list to admit people who sign up for Mass. If people show up without registering fi rst, will be admitted depending of the numbers already registered. If there is space available, they must provide their contact information before entering into the Church.

COMING TO MASS ▪ A face covering is required while attending Mass at Shepherd of the Valley Catholic Church, except for anyone with a health condition that prevents them from wearing one. ▪ The front door of the church will be open 1 hour before Mass on weekend and half hour before Mass during the week for confessions, adoration of our Lord Jesus Christ, who is always in the Tabernacle, Rosary, Divine Mercy or personal devotions before Mass. The doors will be closed and locked promptly at the start of Mass. Those who come late will not be able to get in once the doors are closed. Your name will be checked off or added in the list by a door monitor as you enter. For the safety and well-being of everyone please maintain social distancing and cleanliness inside the church. Only the front door of the church will be available for entrance and exit. ▪ When you enter the church there will be sanitizing dispensers, we encourage you to use them as you enter and leave the parish. ▪ For each Mass there will be a designated set of pews, indicated by colors, to sit in. Only the pews of the color of that Mass can be used. If you come with your family you can sit together, otherwise please spread out from other families in the designated pews.

Queridos feligreses: Después de las nuevas regulaciones de la Gobernadora para la fase II, la conferencia con el Arzobispo y nuestras reuniones locales del vicariatos, estas son las nuevas pautas parroquiales / directrices para la Fase II que se han adoptado en Pastor del Valle para las Misas públicas, eventos litúrgicos y reuniones de grupos en nuestros edifi cios.

On weekends there will be three lines for distributing Holy communion. The priest will be in the center and two Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion on either side. If you wish to receive Communion on the tongue, please wait until those who have receive on the hand have already done so.

▪ The Cry Room will not be open for use during Masses. ▪ After the Celebration of the Mass: please maintain social distancing as you leave the church. For the safety of everyone, there will be NO social gatherings before or after Mass. There will be no staying after Mass for extra chaplets or other prayers. Despite all these restrictions, we are delighted to be able to say, “WELCOME BACK DEAR PARISHIONERS!” We thank you and greatly appreciate your prayers, patience, understanding, and cooperation. Sin embargo, la parroquia ofrece la posibilidad de reunirse en nuestras instalaciones, siguiendo las estas pautas /directrices: 1.) Para programar una reunión, la ofi cina necesita saber con tiempo anticipado y programar la reunión en el calendario general para evitar confl ictos, como también, poder proporcionar el equipo necesario para la limpieza. 2.) El líder del grupo o alguien designado por el grupo, necesita recopilar la información de contacto de todos los miembros que asisten a cada reunión y enviar una copia a la ofi cina de la parroquia después del servicio o el siguiente día hábil de ofi cina. 3.) El grupo mismo o alguien designado por el

grupo, debe seguir el procedimiento de limpieza y desinfectar todas las áreas utilizadas durante la reunión, incluidos los baños si fueron usados, áreas generales y puertas. Para facilitar el proceso de limpieza y desinfección, utilizaremos las sillas de plástico en la iglesia, la capilla y el salón parroquial. No se concede ninguna excepción en este momento. 4.) Por cuestiones de salud, no se permitirán alimentos ni bebidas durante estas reuniones. No se concede ninguna excepción en este momento. 5.) Por favor, recuerde que la puerta principal de la iglesia estará abierta 1 hora antes de la Misa el fi nes de semana y media hora antes de la Misa durante la semana para confesiones, adoración de nuestro Señor Jesucristo, quien siempre está en el Tabernáculo, el rezo del Santo Rosario, Divina Misericordia o devociones personales antes de la misa. ▪ Otros sacramentos como la Confi rmación, la Primera Comunión, Bautizos, Bodas, Unción de los Enfermos, Confesiones urgentes y funerales serán estudiados caso por caso y programados por los sacerdotes según lo permita el programa, siguiendo las mismas recomendaciones anteriores. ▪ Si no tenemos sufi cientes voluntarios para limpiar las áreas generales después de cada Misa, no podremos tener tantas Misas como se ha programado. Los voluntarios pueden inscribirse en el mismo lugar en línea en la pagina web de la parroquia, en la misma página donde nos registramos para las misas, pero en un evento diferente llamado “Inscripción de voluntarios”. de cada Misa. En segundo lugar, ayudan a la parroquia a contactar a las personas en caso de una posible exposición del virus en la Misa o evento religioso. Las listas están destinadas para uso interno de la parroquia y deben mantenerse durante un periodo de 60 días. La parroquia puede pedirles a las personas que hayan estado expuestas que se contacten por su cuenta con el condado u otros funcionarios de salud. La parroquia seguirá las pautas establecidas por los funcionarios de salud con respecto a la exposición potencial. Los funcionarios de salud pública pueden solicitar a la parroquia la información de contacto, y puede ser necesario proporcionarla para la localización de contactos. Todos los miembros de la familia deben estar en la lista. Un voluntario estará en la puerta con la lista de nombres para admitir a las personas asignadas a cada Misa. Si las personas se presentan sin registrarse, serán admitidas dependiendo de los números ya registrados. Si hay espacio disponible, deben proporcionar su información de contacto antes de ingresar a la Iglesia.

AL LLEGAR A LA IGLESIA ▪ Se requiere cubrirse la boca con tapabocas/mascarilla mientras asiste a la Misa en la Iglesia Pastor del Valle, a excepción de cualquier persona con una condición de salud que les impida usar una. ▪ La puerta principal de la iglesia estará abierta una hora antes de la Misa el fi n de semana y media hora antes de la Misa durante la semana para confesiones, adoración de nuestro Señor Jesucristo, quien siempre está presente en el Tabernáculo, el rezo del Santo Rosario, la Divina Misericordia o las devociones personales antes de la Misa. Las puertas se cerrarán al comenzar de la misa y los que lleguen tarde no podrán

entrar una vez que las puertas estén cerradas. Su nombre será marcado o agregado en la lista por un voluntario en la puerta principal de la Iglesia al ingresar. Por la seguridad y el bienestar de todos, mantenga el distanciamiento social y la limpieza dentro de la iglesia. Solo la puerta principal de la iglesia estará disponible para entrada y salida. ▪ Cuando ingrese a la iglesia, habrá dispensadores de gel antibacterial para que los usen al entrar y salir de la Iglesia. ▪ Para cada Misa habrá un conjunto designado de bancas, indicados por un color, para sentarse. Solo se pueden usar las bancas del color asignado a esa Misa. Si viene con su familia, pueden sentarse juntos; de lo contrario, sepárese de otras familias en las bancas designadas. ▪ La caja/canasta de las ofrendas estará al frente de la fuente Bautismal y se recomienda a las personas depositar sus ofrendas al momento de su llegada. ▪ NO habrá señal de la paz, NO distribución de la Preciosa Sangre, NO agua bendita en la fuente Bautismal. ▪ Al momento de la Sagrada Comunión, hágalo en una sola fi la y observe el distanciamiento social como lo indican las marcas en el piso. Los fi nes de semana habrá tres líneas para distribuir la Sagrada Comunión. El sacerdote estará en el centro y dos Ministros Extraordinarios de la Sagrada Comunión uno a cada lado. Si desea recibir la Comunión directamente en la lengua, espere hasta el fi nal de la linea y siga a los que la están recibiendo en la mano. ▪ El cuarto de los niños no estará abierto para su uso durante las Misas. ▪ Después de la celebración de la Misa: mantenga el distanciamiento social al salir de la iglesia. Por la seguridad de todos, NO habrá reuniones sociales antes o después de la Misa. No habrá lugar después de la Misa para coronillas adicionales u otras oraciones piadosas.
