In the State of São Paulo the area covered by native forests declined from 85% in 1500 (when Brazil was discovered) to 13% in 1995. Around 60% of forest remnants are located in the coastline region.

aims preconized by the Convention on

Biological Diversity, therefore it uses its

definition of biodiversity.

Commun aims of the research projects linked to the BIOTA-FAPESP Program are:

a) to understand the process that generate and

maintain biodiversity as well as those that result in biodiversity loss;

b) to organize, and make available to police makers and to society in general, biological information relevant for the establishment of priorities for biodiversity conservation and sustainable use;

Equacionada a questão da padronização e integração dos dados resultantes do esforço amostral atual, restava a questão do resgate do gigantesco acervo de informações pretéritas depositado nas coleções biológicas (Museus, herbários, Coleções de Cultura, etc…)

Novamente com o intuito de desenvolver e testar modelos, que possam posteriormente balizar iniciativas nacionais, em dezembro de 2001 a FAPESP aprova, no âmbito do o BIOTA/FAPESP, o projeto Sistema de Informação Distribuído para Coleções Biológicas

• Objectives

• This proposal aims to create a network associated to BIOTA/FAPESP Program aiming to prospecting crude extracts and purified samples from plants, microorganisms, inveterbrate and including marine organisms. This program should include all facilities to carry out biological evaluation by means of high throughout put technologies and analytical systems to provide fingerprint data for the samples.

The establishment of this bank of extracts, fraction and pure compounds would represent an enormous facility to access quickly and to find products of high commercial value such as medicines, insecticides, agrochemicals, etc., in a large and coordinated bioprospecting program for São Paulo State

REDEBIO is being established in accordance with the Convention on Biological Diversity as well as the recent Brazilian legal instruments regarding bioprospecting activities (MP 2186-16 and Decreto 3.945 de 28/09/2001). A share of the royalties/profits, obtained by introduction in the market any commercial product as result of research carried out by the Network, will be shared equitably between the Network, its commercial partners, and whenever applicable, traditional and/or indigenous populations.
