Ministers’ Report

Graham Agnew provided a brief report to the meeting thanking the members for their support and emphasising that “God hasn’t finished with us yet”.

He stressed that the Sunday gathering was very special for the people of God to come together and go forth into the community during the ensuing week.

Growing the Church is important, not just in regard to numbers but in all things that we are called to do as our mission.

Similarly James Bowden thanked the congregation for their support.

Treasurers Report

Grant Slade reported that we are currently ahead of our budget and expect to show an operating surplus in lieu of a deficit by the end of the year.

Income is up, and expenses are on target including capital works expenditure.

Proposed Budget 2017The Treasurer presented the proposed Budget for 2017, detailing the main items of expenditure and income. The Budget has been based on a small increase in the level of giving and allows for an increase in James’ hours from mid-2017

We are expecting a similar level of expenditure including for property and maintenance.

We have adequate funds in our bank accounts to cover small deficit budgets for a few years, but will need to address this issue in the medium future.

MINISTRY TEAM LEADER REPORT

It is with great pleasure that I submit my third annual report to the Blackwood Church of Christ community.

What started as an initial twelve month interim arrangement will, by the time I’m finished (at the end of next year), turn out to be a four-year appointment!

Right at the outset, let me say I continue to derive much pleasure and satisfaction fromhaving the great privilege of ministering among you. This is a Church which has some ofthe hardest working and most passionate members I have ever known. What is achieved here in any given month, allowing for the fact we’re not a huge church, is quite remarkable! This fact is reflected in the contents of these various reports.

At the same time my work among you has, at times, been a source of considerablefrustration in that I have chosen, at my stage of life, to restrict myself to three days perweek only. What I'm finding is, this is about the time it takes in a Church of Blackwood’ssize, to attend to the essential requirements of pastoral care, administration, team-building, leadership development etc. I’m missing those extra couple of days which I have traditionally spent on developing and growing the Church, in a very concentrated and intentional way.

That aside, what I'm excited about at the present time is the era of transition we’re about to enter, when James Bowden will begin the process of assuming greater responsibility in the overall leadership of the work here. You'll start to see the difference as we move into the second half of this year, with James being a lot more visible (especially with Sunday preaching) and my role as a coach and mentor beginning to take on a new dimension.

All of this, of course, is good news for the future of Blackwood Church. We have anoutstanding ministry candidate in James: a young man full of vision, with a deep seateddesire to see the Church of Jesus Christ flourish.

At a time when many Churches of Christ in South Australia are struggling for their verysurvival, more than ever we need local congregations with an awareness of pastachievements - but with a strong and unswerving commitment to future possibilities!

I am eagerly looking forward to my remaining 18 months in the role of Ministry TeamLeader, believing there is still much work to be done in preparing Blackwood for its journey into the future. Of course, with the rapid speed of change in our world, it's extremely difficult to imagine (in any detail), what that future may look like.

One thing we can be certain of is our great God is already there and is calling us forward, to aspire to our full potential. After all, He is the one who has promised:

Page 10: BLACKWOOD CHURCH OF CHRIST - Morialta Trust€¦  · Web viewA FINAL WORD. The Elders ... Women’s Bible study group members, parents and siblings of children attending Kumon classes,

“I alone know the plans I have for you…plans to bring about the future you hopefor…” (Jeremiah 29: 11)

Thanks be to God for the privilege of service and witness in His Name…

ASSOCIATE MINISTERS REPORT

On the final night of State Youth Games 2016, a worship service was one of the last places I felt like being. Camping out with youth and young adults on classroom floors, I’d only slept for a handful of hours over the past few days. I was struggling to speak; my nose felt like it was full of cement, and my head wasn’t much better. As the speaker finished his talk with a call for those who wanted to publicly recognise Jesus as Lord to come to the front, I winced internally. No matter how polite and gentle the call was (and it was), I was doubtful anyone would come forward.

I was wrong. Several young people accepted that invitation, including three of our own. As I saw them experience something of the love, beauty and joy of the God who created them, I couldn’t help but think how thankful and undeserving I (in my grumpiness) was to witness this. It’s why we do this: we do our work, so that God might take our meagre offerings and use them to transform people, making them whole.

I’m very thankful for those who have done this work. Our youth leaders have juggled busy schedules of work and study to invest in the lives of our youth and youth outside of this church. Our Kidzone leaders (led by Carolyn Adams), Wednesday Morning Crèche Volunteers (led in 2016 by Peggy Nelson) and Kids Hope mentors (led by Nina Corlett-McDonald) have likewise put in the effort - week in; week out - to serve and love our children, families and youth.

Last year several of our youth leaders participated in the ministry training program Shift. It was a great opportunity to dream and plan for the years ahead. There are many around us in our community who are lonely, struggling or sense that there is more to life than just getting by. Our work, introducing these people to Jesus, is just beginning.

James Bowden

Page 11: BLACKWOOD CHURCH OF CHRIST - Morialta Trust€¦  · Web viewA FINAL WORD. The Elders ... Women’s Bible study group members, parents and siblings of children attending Kumon classes,

Elders’ Report

2016 was a good year for our church with both Graham Agnew and James Bowden settled in their roles as ministers of the church. Their ministry roles were complementary with Graham as the Ministry Team Leader and James as an Associate Minister with a focus on youth and young families. Due to his studies and his role as State Youth Minister James only preached once a month during 2016. Graham’s focus has been on worship, the spiritual life and the pastoral needs of the church.

MINISTRY

At the time of considering Graham and James for ministry with us during 2014 it was the view of the Elders that James had the qualities to be our future Ministry Team Leader. So as part of the Elders looking into future ministry for Blackwood Church of Christ the Chair of Elders early in the year commenced a conversation with both ministers and in particular James as to his future role with us and when he might feel able to commit to us full time. No pressure was placed on James to conclude his State Youth Ministry role however he was informed that an answer early in the second half of the year would help the Elders in assessing both his and Graham’s future ministry with us.

The outcome of initial discussions led to us undertaking a ministry review survey for both ministers. This survey included all Elders, 20 diverse members of the congregation and a self and peer review by both ministers. Review participation was done on the basis of anonymity for those involved as returns came in with no names attached. The review returns were collated and we asked Phil Hoffman of Blackwood Uniting Church to evaluate the results and feedback these to the ministers and elders over a couple of weeks.

Overall the results were very positive for both ministers and a number of constructive suggestions came out of the review process, that helped inform the Elders as they assessed Blackwood’s future direction. We thank the congregational members who participated in the review for their valuable assistance. As Elders we are excited about the future prospects of our church as we move toward 2017, 2018 and beyond.

This was followed by an announcement to the church in late September where we gave notice of two motions to be put to the church at our half yearly meeting in November.

Page 12: BLACKWOOD CHURCH OF CHRIST - Morialta Trust€¦  · Web viewA FINAL WORD. The Elders ... Women’s Bible study group members, parents and siblings of children attending Kumon classes,

These were:

“That James Bowden’s ministry hours be increased to 0.8 from the 1st of July 2017.”

“That Graham Agnew, at the conclusion of his term as Ministry Team Leader at the end of 2017, be appointed for a further 12 months at 0.5 as a Minister at Blackwood. His specific role during 2018 will be as an intentional facilitator of James Bowden’s transition into the Senior Ministry role from January 2019.”

These were put at the half yearly meeting and gained overwhelming support.

COMMUNITY

Our community focus has largely been through the Mitcham Hills Inter-Church Council with Elders Greg Ratcliff and Maxine Moore being the Church delegates. This group has supported the Schools Chaplaincy program and Beacon, the community care agency operating in our office area. The other three community programs have been the FYI program operating in our kitchen/foyer area on Fridays, the Shopper’s Crèche program managed by Peggy Nelson for many years, now managed by Marion Palmer, and Kids Hope operating in Hawthorndene Primary School, managed by Nina Corlett-McDonald.

It came to out attention during the second half of the year that the federal government funding for a Pastoral Care Worker for three of our area’s Primary Schools had been reallocated to other schools. The Inter-Church Council decided to reallocate it’s funding for this work and cover the three schools for one day per week.

This included Hawthorndene Primary where we have had a long standing relationship through Kids Hope. After negotiations with the school we decided to support the school in a partnership to fund the position for the extra day per week that Jemimah Bishop was funded for in 2016.

WORSHIP

Our worship services continued to be creative and wholesome experiences under the guidance of Graham Agnew. Our numbers continue to average 90 to 120 communicants with many of our members contributing through the music ministry and the helpers’ roster. Our many auxiliaries operating during the week contribute to the worship experience and only exist through the many members who are committed to this work.

Page 13: BLACKWOOD CHURCH OF CHRIST - Morialta Trust€¦  · Web viewA FINAL WORD. The Elders ... Women’s Bible study group members, parents and siblings of children attending Kumon classes,

We are also blessed by our partnership with Blackwood Uniting and our shared worship experiences are enjoyed by both congregations.

ELDERSHIP CHANGES

The Eldership was aware during most of 2016 that Peter Lawrence was not going to stand again as an Elder when his term expired at the end of the year. Further, Greg Ratcliff gave notice during the second half of the year that, with a view to seeking to encourage younger people into church leadership, he would be resigning as an Elder at the end of the year after about 25 years in this role. We thank both Peter and Greg for their many years of service both who served terms as Chair of Elders. Verity Riessen accepted a nomination as an Elder and was elected at the November half yearly meeting. Graeme Murley also gave notice of his intended resignation as an Elder due to his intended relocation to the Victor Harbour area in early 2017.

A FINAL WORDThe Elders acknowledge the hard work undertaken by all of the key leaders and volunteers in the various outreach and support areas during 2016-17. These include our Worship and Music preparation, Kidzone, Kids Hope, Friendship Centre, Shopper's Crèche, Reloaded Youth, Bookworms, Blokes Breakfast, Sewing Group, Coffee Plus, Beacon, Single Women's Business and the Sunday Roast. You are the hands of Jesus Christ, working in and for our community. Many of you are engaged in the pastoral care of members of our community of faith, and beyond. We thank you all for your faithfulness.

Annual

budget per week $ 2 857

Av. Annual Offering pw $ 2 917 Av. Weekly variance over year

$ 60

Income from other sources was slightly up on both budget. The ‘other income’ account shows our reliance on the use of our facilities by other organisations.

This coming yearThis year we have accepted a budget which is based on small increase on 2016’s actual giving.

Our average weekly giving has been factored in at $ 2 986 per week. It is to be hoped that this is a realistic figure based on past experience. In 2017 we are again budgeting on the ministry team of Graham Agnew (0.6) and James Bowden(0.5 for 6 months and 0.8 for 6 months), and Christina Haysman for administration support.

With the staffing and expenses we are once again budgeting for a loss in 2017.

This means we will be eating into our surplus which was gained mainly in 2013/2014.

PROPERTY & FACILITIES REPORT

2016 was again a busy year for property maintenance & projects. There are so many people who contributed to maintenance of our building and I thank you all.

We have done many small improvements/maintenance jobs this year which include but are by no means limited to;

Replace main hot water service Replace hotplate and reseal ovens Minor changes to the kitchen to accommodate Rave/FYI New projector screen in chapel, then replaced with dual projectors and screens New vacuum cleaner purchased with power head to clean the new carpet tiles

properly Test and Tag of all electrical cords and appliances (required annually) New quarterly major clean of church premises

Several major projects were undertaken New keying system & door furniture Repair and repaint external timber Reduce glare from high level windows – foyer

There are still many more major projects for consideration and these will be prioritised with the needs of the church and tenants in mind and as funds become available.

Our much loved & used complex is in reasonable condition for its age however the level of use has increased over the years. Many of the improvements we have made will ensure our premises will continue to be used by us and our valued tenants. We must be vigilant and maintain our premises in good working order for us and our tenants so please continue to report problems as they arise. Our tenants are a vital source of income for the church and it is important for us to keep the building fresh, clean and safe, for them as well as for ourselves.

Believe it or not last month I celebrated 2 years in the ‘hot seat’ of the Administrator’s office here at Blackwood Church of Christ! I continue to learn something every day I arrive at work, which makes my working days fulfilling and rich. Each Thursday and Friday I thank God for two committed and inspiring woman in my volunteers Heather Kidd and Joan Marker, thank you is an understatement of emotion as these woman not only help so generously and selflessly but have become extremely valued and appreciated friends. Emma Stephenson continues to put together The Messenger each Thursday and her much appreciated expertise in all things IT is put to good use regularly for flyers, problem solving, picking up any tasks so willingly that I have not been able to complete due to time restraints and generally calming me down! Emma is also very much appreciated and valued here in the office. The admin team Andrew Tidswell, Andrew Day, Andrew Knight and Grant Slade are a source of huge support and it is such a pleasure to work alongside these generous men, liaising with and ensuring that our premises are well maintained at all times and that any problems that arise are quickly identified and sorted out. 2016 saw the necessity of changing our phone number with an upgrade to NBN and the planning stages of our new Website and Smartphone App (soon to be activated).

Graham, James and I meet each Wednesday for our ‘Team Meeting’ I always look forward to this part of my week! We enjoy fellowship, review the previous Sunday service, and plan the next Sunday’s service, including discussions about the community segment, specific themes and the practicalities of making some things happen, for an enhanced worship experience, i.e. Christmas, Easter, Mothers day, Fathers day, specific sermon series, Kids Hope AUS focus, Family and Youth services and not forgetting each and every Sunday! We pray for each other and our church family and for all we do in this place that it is for and only to glorify our God and in His strength.

A large part of my role is overseeing, invoicing and generally problem solving for our tenants. We currently have ten regular tenants come and go throughout the week, this includes Beacon and FYI. I over see the café ensure it is well stocked with Coffee beans, drinks and snacks and that is clean and tidy and of course that all our wonderful ministries have what they need for their various meetings and that their meeting spaces are ready for their bookings.

Some of my other roles include: the very challenging task of the Duty Roster, payment of accounts, running the diary, preparing Sunday service slides and songs, foyer slides, preparing this Annual report Document and so much more. On that note I would bring to the attention of our Church family the absolute need for the diary to used for a l l bookings, ( including the Chapel ) we have a duty of care to ensure from a health and safety perspective that we are aware when any space in our complex is being used. Many of you are aware of the challenges past and current in the last 18 months with my mother’s diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. I wish to acknowledge and sincerely thank the Elders, Graham and James for allowing me the flexibility of hours, working from home often, your generous prayers and understanding. Mum is defying all the odds at 94 years following a 6 week expectation of life ( in late 2015 ) and still here (albeit we reluctantly we have placed Mum in fulltime care ) having had no active treatment during that time. I can report that tiredness is my middle name but otherwise I am

Page 23: BLACKWOOD CHURCH OF CHRIST - Morialta Trust€¦  · Web viewA FINAL WORD. The Elders ... Women’s Bible study group members, parents and siblings of children attending Kumon classes,

doing well, Mum’s illness has impacted on my ability to sometimes not complete tasks in the desired time frame (especially during 2016 when I was co-carer and living at Mum’s 50% of the week) and for this I thank you sincerely for your understanding and I am so very thankful for the disposition of my church family, who pick up the slack at a moment’s notice so selflessly, willingly and with immeasurable love.

WORSHIP TEAM REPORT

The Worship Team at Blackwood continues to lead our Church in worship that is focused on spirituality, discipleship and hospitality. We seek to discern God’s will as we do justice, love mercy and walk humbly with Him.

Thank you, as always, to the wonderful bunch of hugely committed, talented and passionate people who are part of the team! We are so very fortunate to have a small but wonderful group of people who give of their talents and time so freely.

It has also been wonderful to see the youth becoming more and more involved too – the recent Youth Service being a real highlight. We have cared for and supported each other through many of life’s ups and downs, something that we, as a Church, do so very well.

Alice Stephenson, Cheryl Slade, Verity Riessen and Derrilee Yaeger continue to meet once a month to plan services, choose music to fit in with themes and Bible readings, compile the monthly roster and select new music.

A huge thank you must also go to Christina who leads the support team in the Church Office.

Please continue to encourage and pray for these wonderful people as they serve our God through the worship services at Blackwood.

Thank you Team, for your willingness to be involved, your sense of humour, your patience and the love and care that you show to everyone involved.

SHOPPERS CRECHE

2016 has been another wonderful year working in this delightful ministry with very young children. It followed the usual pattern of free play with a variety of equipment to help stimulate young minds. Numbers varied from term to term, and the Mums appreciated the opportunity to have two hours to attend to other tasks unhindered.  We also appreciated their help in caring for the children once a term.

As the year progressed, Peggy Nelson, June Will & Margaret Russell were faced with therealization that, due to changing circumstances in their lives, they would be unable to continue as team leaders from the beginning of 2017.  This was a hard decision, but we always believed that there would be others within our church, who would be prepared to take on this important ministry and what a wonderful answer to our prayers that this has happened.

2017 has seen Marion Palmer at the helm, using her amazing skills & seeing the growth in

numbers of children attending each week.  Thank you, Marion, for all you have done to

enhance this ministry which we believe is so much appreciated by all of us & our local community.  Thank you too, to Alan Moore for his steadfast commitment to this work & it is wonderful to see the children so happy when he is there.  Thanks are also due to others within our church who help each term, we need you all.

We are indeed thankful to our God & the whole ministry team of Blackwood Church of

Christ for their support & encouragement.  We believe “Shoppers’ Crèche” will be an

ongoing ministry for many years to come, & it has been a privilege for us to have served in this way.

Team Leaders -Peggy Nelson, Margaret Russell & June Will

WEDNESDAY MORNING CRECHE ( formally Shoppers Crèche )

Wednesday Morning Crèche has got off to a flying start this year with 26 children currently on the roll and 10 regular volunteers in assistance. We are averaging about 15 children each session and things get pretty lively at times. However there is wonderful warmth and a growing sense of belonging among children, mothers, fathers, carers and workers that is very encouraging.

Wednesday Morning Crèche has been going now for 26 years and some of our volunteers are original participants. That is truly commitment!! For the past 15 years it has been led by Peggy Nelson, Margaret Russell and June Will and their faithfulness through all seasons of life is again a story of love and devotion – to God and the children and their carers. They have hung in even when things have got tough and we thank them for all that they have done. They continue to be part of our roster which we also very much appreciate as they bring a depth of wisdom and experience. We wish them God’s blessings as they now negotiate fresh challenges and the changes life brings.

Page 25: BLACKWOOD CHURCH OF CHRIST - Morialta Trust€¦  · Web viewA FINAL WORD. The Elders ... Women’s Bible study group members, parents and siblings of children attending Kumon classes,

We continue to welcome expressions of interest from anyone with a heart for young children and some time and energy to spare on a Wednesday morning. We guarantee it won’t be dull!!

The TEMPLE WORKS PROJECT Report

The New Testament reminds us that our bodies are God’s Temple (1 Cor. 6:19f). What a wonderful concept! The Temple Works project encourages us to realize this and to put it into practice.

This new ministry commenced in the latter half of 2016. Stage one addressed physical health. A series of 3 sessions by a local Dietician focused on balanced & healthy eating. We had a session by a local Physiotherapist called “Watch your Back!”. We started our “Walk in the Park” sessions. We met fortnightly at Wittunga Gardens for a walk around the lake and good fellowship. Designed to encourage us all to get into the habit of regular walking, these walks led to more adventurous opportunities for those who sought it.

We intend to develop similar activities again this year for terms 3 & 4. We trust that the concept of our body as God’s Temple will also encourage involvement in other activities the church is running this year, which address our mental, social & spiritual health.

Our bodies – God’s Temples! Amazing! Let’s use the resources we have to make it a daily reality

Graham Prior (Co-ordinator) for our wonderful Team!

RESOURCE CENTRE REPORT

Page 26: BLACKWOOD CHURCH OF CHRIST - Morialta Trust€¦  · Web viewA FINAL WORD. The Elders ... Women’s Bible study group members, parents and siblings of children attending Kumon classes,

I could easily resubmit the report written last year as my sentiments remain. Again we must acknowledge those who quietly go about encouraging a wider community to take advantage of our resources. While very few resources have been purchased during this last year, several books have been donated. Thank You. The Wish List grows for meaningful additions to our collection. The Foyer Display aims to support sermon topics and needs/ interests of ourcommunity. Do keep an eye open during the next semester 2017-2018 for resources pertinent to you.

SUNDAY ROAST REPORT

For a number of years now, a group of people have shared a meal together on the first Sunday of the month. In 2016 the average number of meals provided each month was 24, the same as for the previous year.

We usually serve a meal between March and December but this year we had to cancel the July meal because all of the regular and fill-in cooks were unavailable.

We have been able to keep the cost of the meal at $10.00 for a number of years now as we have had some reserves in the bank. We almost broke even on the finances during this year and will try to keep the cost the same for the next few years while, if necessary, running down the reserves a little.

We have been pleased to welcome two new regular helpers – Joy Bibby and Gillian Rosman.

Janet, Peter and Margaret thank all those who have helped during the year in cooking and helping to clear away afterwards, etc. We look forward to meeting again in 2017.

SINGLE WOMENS BUSINESS

Page 27: BLACKWOOD CHURCH OF CHRIST - Morialta Trust€¦  · Web viewA FINAL WORD. The Elders ... Women’s Bible study group members, parents and siblings of children attending Kumon classes,

Single Women's Business (SWB) is a group with a social focus for women at our Church who are single, divorced or widowed. It has become a beneficial and informal way in which these women can meet for friendship, fellowship and fun in a comfortable space and find companionship and make new friends. The number of ladies involved is approximately 20 with about 10-16 in attendance at most functions. We meet bi-monthly for dinner and in between get together to enjoy breakfast or lunch at various venues. I personally have enjoyed getting to know the Ladies better and have appreciated the friendship and support by being part of this group.Women who are new to our Church fellowship are warmly welcomed and it is an opportunity to make them feel part of our family and get to know others.

RELOADED YOUTH REPORT

In 2016/17 Reloaded Youth has been predominantly run by James Bowden, Emma Stephenson, Kat Shanahan, and Bek Haynes, with close help from Brandon Kennedy. In 2016/17 Emma, Kat and Bek have done some training in SHIFT, a course which has helped them build leadership and youth ministry attributes. This has helped the leaders really come together for the past couple of terms and really hone into what we want this youth group to show and who it is aimed at.

Through the SHIFT study program we came up with ideas in particular aspects of youth ministry. Such as what things are we doing to connect with the youth, what things are to win the youth into faith, then what we can do to build the youth before we send them to be fishers of men.

The Reloaded Youth program consists of a bible study, called scope, and events nights; taking place on alternate weeks of the school term. Through 2016/17 the numbers for both the bible study and the youth event nights has grown since the same time last year. In the bible study we have an average of 10 people coming each night, whereas last year it was 7. For event nights we are averaging 15 people, and at the same time last year it was 12. So we are growing slowly but surely, which is exciting for the future of Reloaded Youth and the youth program here at the church.

Last year Reloaded Youth once again participated in State Youth Games with a smaller team than last year, but it was still a great weekend of community. As a Church we came last and were awarded the Wooden Spoon, the second time we have won this. During the weekend we had some great breakthroughs with the youth and their faith, and a lot of the boys in our group really connected which was inspiring for us as leaders.

The aim of Reloaded Youth is to be growing the youth in a Christ like environment so that they can bring more youth. We are also coming up with a specific mission statement for Reloaded Youth but we have yet to come to a wording agreement. Our vision for this year is to incorporate all the things that we as leaders have learnt through

Page 28: BLACKWOOD CHURCH OF CHRIST - Morialta Trust€¦  · Web viewA FINAL WORD. The Elders ... Women’s Bible study group members, parents and siblings of children attending Kumon classes,

the SHIFT program into the way we run the youth group. We have already started doing some of these things this term as we have really made our event nights intentional and each one addressing a different area in which we want to show a Christ like community for the youth.

Roles are as follows:

James Bowden: Reports to Elders, overseer of the leader’s health and development, overseer and main organiser of scope (bible study)

Emma Stephenson: Treasurer, overseer of events, Chair of meetings and minute taker

Kat Shanahan: Pastoral care and mentoring, overseer of scope

Bek Haynes: Coordinator of wider church interaction, Young adults (just starting)

Brandon Kennedy: Planning events and leading event nights, food coordinator

KIDS HOPE REPORT

Kids Hope continues to make a huge difference at Hawthorndene Primary School. As always there are more students needing support than we have mentors available. The Kids Hope Service in February this year was an opportunity to highlight the positive and exciting ministry this is in the life of the Blackwood Church of Christ. We were also blessed to host Tim Smith, from Kids Hope Aus, as he presented on developmental assets in children and how Kids Hope meets many of those. Parents and staff at the school continue to be delighted at the difference and hour a week makes in the life of a child, simply because mentors are willing to give up a little bit of space in their week. We will be running more training in the next few weeks so more mentors can get into the school. As always, we would welcome more people in this ministry. My personal thanks to the church for their continued support and prayers for this ministry. Indeed, it impacts on more than the children's lives!

FRIENDSHIP CENTRE REPORT

Page 29: BLACKWOOD CHURCH OF CHRIST - Morialta Trust€¦  · Web viewA FINAL WORD. The Elders ... Women’s Bible study group members, parents and siblings of children attending Kumon classes,

Our weekly attendances have been around 14 this year. We are missing Betty Hobbs, who has now moved to Onkaparinga Nursing Home. Belle celebrated her ninetieth birthday on the 8th February this year.

We welcome Chris Shears who has volunteered to do a Book Review once a month from the Church Library. This has been great as the library was not well known to the Friendship People, and they now are able to borrow books. Thanks to Chris who gives her time to do this.

It was decided that we would work to make gifts for a stall at the Church Garage sale to raise money for Hoa Stone new project in Vietnam. This kept us all busy, and approximately $200 was raised at the craft stall.

We celebrated the Friendship Birthday in June by visiting The Cedars at Hahndorf and then continued on to Woodside to have lunch at the Hotel. It was a great day.

It was decided to enter a Christmas Tree with handmade decorations for the Blackwood Pageant this year. Anne Withey was in charge for co-ordinating this project. We all had fun creating the decorations and then putting it all together at the Senior Citizens Club.

Christmas lunch was held at the Belair Country Club. The meal was delicious once again and everyone had a good time.

We look forward to more bus trips and continuing to gather for craft and chats. Friendship Centre is open for anyone to join us on Wednesday afternoons from 1.00 – 3.30 pm during school terms.

COFFEE PLUS

Page 30: BLACKWOOD CHURCH OF CHRIST - Morialta Trust€¦  · Web viewA FINAL WORD. The Elders ... Women’s Bible study group members, parents and siblings of children attending Kumon classes,

We are now into our third year for Coffee Plus. We continue to provide a café on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings and Tuesday afternoons. We also support FYI on Fridays and provide Sunday morning coffee after the worship service. We have discontinued the Thursday evening café at this time due to lack of staff.

The café continues to make significant connections with clients of some of our tenants and church groups including parents and children, Women’s Bible study group members, parents and siblings of children attending Kumon classes, Beacon clients and volunteers, Wednesday Morning crèche participants, the FYI team and Sunday worship attendees.

For many of these groups it is not about the coffee but more about helping people feel welcome. Scones, biscuits and bread are often on offer and are much appreciated. Young children love to visit the family rooms to play with the toys.

Many visitors take the opportunity to read books from the bookshelves and like to take them home.

Without the support of about a dozen loyal volunteers this valuable ministry could not exist.

BOOKWORMS - Reading Group

Ever popular Bookworms still continues on the last Friday of the month January-November, 1.00pm -3.00pm.This year an annual excursion was made to the Uniting Church Bookshop at Myponga and it was reported that cars returning home via Tapleys Hill were seen with loaded car boots. While the number of participants grows we still manage to meet in the Resource Room to share, learn, discuss and broaden our thinking. If you need more information or would like to join the ladies, please phone 0432560299.

BLOKES BREKKIE REPORT

Interested men continued to meet on the first Saturday morning of each month, and heard an interesting range of speakers. Attendance numbers were generally in the 12 to 16 range and certainly more than previous years. The slow accumulation of funds over the cost of food enabled a donation of $250 to be made to Beacon just before Christmas.

We had one combined event  when women were invited to hear Graham and Judy Thomas talk on their trip to the Olympics and South America, and that was a great morning.

Thank you to the loyal team of Kevin Marsh, Charlie Shears and Greg Ratcliff, for purchasing the food, cooking and setting up. Thank you also to the many men who come and make this a worthwhile event, even after fifteen plus years.
