LIBRARY

Library is derived from the Latin word liber which

means- A BOOK.

Earlier a library was a place where books were written or kept.

This term was frequently used as a collection of booksand a librarian as a keeper or guard of books.

This word has taken centuries to become central point of all social actions and has got recognition as a social institution.


Types of Libraries

Broadly there are four types of libraries :

1. Public Library

This definition describes two functions of a library: i) the care of a collection of books means

A) Information Dissemination CentreFor this purpose it collects, processes and then disseminates

up-to-date and authentic information on all subjects according to the information needs of Information the local community. It develops collection on the basis of educational level, literacy rate, age groups, nature of occupation, profession, language, cultural habits and reading interest etc. of the local population to provide barrier-free information.

B) Life Long Learning Centre

1) It works like a life long learning centre and each and every person of the community is a life member of this centre. Therefore it is known as a public university or a library of public university.

2) This provides a strong base for adult education programmes. To cultivate reading habits among children at an early age, it makes provision for special collections or separate section or wing for them in the library premises.

3) It acquires documents on all subject to provide support system for all modes of education systems especially for adult education, non-formal, and self-education systems.

4) It provides latest information in different disciplines to facilitate the users to improve and develop their skills and competency by selflearning.

For example, it keeps documents on self-learning like latest methods of agricultural operations, poultry, bee-keeping; marketing the local products etc. so that people engaged in these occupations would be benefited.

C) COMMUNITYS INTELLECTUAL CENTRE

A public library works as a common platform to provoke and stimulate the intellectual, educational, social and spiritual thinking of the community. By organizing seminars, debates, exhibitions, lectures etc. it tries to involve each and every person of the society in such activities so that they can exchange their ideas, experiences, suggestions etc. and thus develop their interest to perform as an active part of the society. It enhances mutual understanding among the people and makes them efficient to solve the social and local problems on their own.

D) RECREATION CENTRE

A public library performs this function also. It provides refreshment for mans spirit by the provision of documents like fiction, audio-visuals etc. for relaxation, pleasure and entertainment. The cultural programmes organized by the public library also give support to this function. It encourages healthy recreation and constructive use of leisure time of its users.

E) COMMUNITYS CULTURE PRESERVATION CENTRE

A public library works as a cultural center also. It promotes different cultural activities of that locality by organizing cultural programmes such as dramas, music concerts, folk dances, puppet shows etc. in its premises. These programmesprovide entertainment as well as develop communal harmony in the society. It also promotes awareness of cultural heritage,appreciation of the arts, scientific achievements and innovations and provides access to cultural expressions of all performing arts. It helps in fostering inter-cultural dialogue by favoring cultural diversity. It collects and preserves material relating to the history and culture of its area. It conserves culture and art and also makes its further transmission.

F) INSTRUMENT OF SOCIAL CHANGE

It works as an effective instrument to create awareness in the society. By organizing seminars, debates, workshops, exhibitions etc. it creates awareness regarding contemporary political and social issues and stigmas in the society. With thehelp of suitable documents it influences the attitude of public in combating prejudicial treatment of certain groups, thus removes barriers between groups of people. It also works as a catalyst by awakening masses at the grass root level with the power of knowledge.

G) REPRESENTATIVE OF DEMOCRACY

A public library represents the real meaning of democracy. By providing equal access to all community members without any bias it enhances equality and social justice, promotes intellectual freedom and advancement of knowledge, generates in the young generation a sense of purposefulness dedication and confidence in themselves and faith in democracys future. It works as a platform in the community for open and fruitful discussions, to have healthy dialogues with each other and to share their views and experiences on some common problems. A library attached or associated with a university and used by students, teachers, researchers, administrative staff etc. of the university as well as by the other research workers, alumni outside the university is known as university library.It is also known as the heart of university. It works like an axis of all educational and research activities in all disciplines. According to Dr. Krishan Kumar a university library is a part of a university set up. Therefore, it exists to serve the objectives of its parent organization. Every library programme must support universitys total programme. In other words, a university library should aim to advance the functions of its university. It should reflect character of the university.He also states that the major distinction between a college library and university library that a university library lays emphasis mainly upon research. Thus we find that research is a major objective of a university library. In others words, it circulates knowledge to generate new knowledge.

In 20th century with the development of industrial, technological and scientific advances the concept of special libraries came in to existence. The growing need for specializedinformation for further development and research came to play a vital role in the expansion of special libraries.

DEFINITIONAccording to American Library Association (ALA ) glossary of

library and information science- SPECIAL LIBRARY is

a library established, supported and administered by a business firm, private corporation, association, government agency, or other special interest group or agency to meet the information needs of its members or staff in pursuing the goals of the organistion. Scope of collections and services is limited to the subject interest of the host or parent organization.

In other words, special library collects updated and comprehensive information on the subject concerned with the parent organization and disseminate this information promptly to the people associated with the organization on demand and in anticipation.Besides this, one other factor is that a special library develops its major collection:

ON SOME SPECIAL SUBJECT/ FIELD- For example, National Science Library, National Library of Medicine, libraries of government and non-government organizations like Parliament Library, library of Ministry of Law.

OF SPECIAL KIND OF DOCUMENTS - For example, National Library for Blind, Dehradun keeps special collection of Braille and In audio books for persons with visual impairment, Library of Indian Standards Institute (ISI) mainly keeps collection of patents.

Examples of Special LibraryExamples of Special Library

For example:

National Library for the Blind, it deals with special kind of documents i.e. Braille and audio books and also with special user group i.e. persons with visual impairment or blind.

Library of Supreme Court of India, which keeps major collection of court cases and decisions which are mainly used by lawyers and judges, thus the user group is also of a special kind.

Library of Indian Standards Institute (ISI) mainly keeps patents which are special type of document and used by some special user group and related to some specific field or area.

A NATIONAL LIBRARY keeps all documents of and about a nation under some legal provision and thus represents publications of and about the whole nation.

of foreign literature, including books about the country;

not be placed in the 'national libraries' category.
