My eerste vuurdoop hier by YANA was die AGM wat in Meimaand gehou is. Vriendelike Groete, Hannetjie Kelderman Bestuurder
Dear Parents, Friends and Family,
It is a little over 6 months since I started here at YANA. You have embraced me with warmth and kindness that overwhelmed me. Thank you for that! Right at the start of this newsletter I wish to thank you all for your support and help. Every time I sent out a request for contributions or needed hands to help, I got an overwhelming response. My first challenge at YANA has been the AGM that was held in May. The people that know, told me the attendance was extraordinary high. I met a lot of people that day, so please forgive me if I do not remember everyone. The first fundraiser was the Potjiekos. Although the Potjiekos has been done for many years, we thought it may be a good idea to change the format a bit. Instead of the Friday, we moved it to a Saturday. The idea behind this was to give working people a chance to attend as well and to create a social event. It was also decided to give the Potjiekos a bit of a twist by changing it into a competition. To make it fun, there was decided on Boeresport. After discussing these ideas with the staff, the Potjiekos
planning took off with a bang. People came forward with the
most fun and interesting ideas.
The end result was a funfilled day and lots of food.
Hopefully next year more people will attend.
Kind Regards,
Hannetjie Kelderman

YANA, die Here Sorg
bekwame personeellede by YANA verwelkom. Beide het goed by YANA se aktiwiteite ingepas.
Hul beleef haar
as ‘n opregte, vriendelike en sagte persoon.
2019 is running out of days. May I use this opportunity to wish you all a very blessed Christmas and a
peaceful and wonderful 2020.

YA YANA- You are not alone.
is.
“I failed my way to success”.
Die afgelope maande was propvol
pret by YANA, met die jaarlikse
potjie kos kompetisie, braai
inlywing, en Pierneef konsert. YANA-
inwoners gaan voort met die
progam, waar hulle onderandere
verskeie groepe bywoon soos
terapie, wellness, OT, stress
management, aktiwiteits groepe,
asook groepe aangebied deur
vrywilligers soos kuns, gemeenskaps
uitreik, brei-groepie, musiek en
natuurlik die nuwe tuin-groepie.
Groepe sluit onderwerpe in soos
kommunikasie vermoëns,
assertiveness, empatie, emosies
herken en hanteer, persoonlike
higiëne, en doelwit stellings.
YANA-therapists attended a symposium where the strong link
between mind and body is realized anew. Dr. R. Ally from the
faculty of health science at Wits university presented on the tie
between gut-health and psychiatry, where his research indicates
that a relationship exists between gut bacteria and neural-
communications in the brain. The microbiome in our stomach has
influences on our physical health, as well as our mental health-
but luckily microbiomes can easily be changed with a healthy diet
within weeks. This further places the emphasis on an holistic
approach in the YANA-program.
Residents write:
On being my 21st
year, I accomplished great successes. For instance sold many paintings over the years, did singing in Pierneeff, of which I could never before. I’ve learnt a great deal in communication skills and get on better with society in general. Thanks to YANA and meds for recovery. (Hubert Doherty)
Therapy @ YANA Over the course of seven years,
Therapy @ Yana’s contributions have covered topics
e.g Psychosocial rehabilitation, Recovery, Quality of
Life, Mindfulness as well as Positive Psychology.
Therapy at YANA is rooted in the Medical Model,
utilizing diagnoses as stipulated in the Diagnostic and
Statistical Manual 5 (2013).
Even though therapy at YANA is guided by the Medical
model and diagnoses of Schizophrenia/Schizo-Affective
Disorder, therapeutic interventions and the way a
person is viewed is not limited by specific diagnoses,
but rooted, influenced and guided by a variety of
theories e.g. a Person-centred theory, Positive
psychology and Strength based theory. These theories
form the foundation onto which other techniques are
utilized e.g. Cognitive behavior, Mindfulness methods.
These theories represent newer ways of thinking
about, understanding and treating human difficulties.
Prior to World War II, Psychology had three distinct
missions: curing mental illness, making the lives of all
people more productive and fulfilling, and identifying
and nurturing talent. Post World War II this focus
sadly shifted towards the (narrow) focus on treatment
of abnormal behavior and mental illness.
During the 1950’s another shift in thinking occurred
with thinkers such as Carl Rogers, Erich Fromm and
Abraham Maslow towards focusing on the positive
aspects of human nature.
Positive Psychology became the theme of Martin
Seligman’s term as President of the American
Psychological Association in 1998. He can be seen as
the father of contemporary Positive psychology.
In Positive psychotherapy the focus is specifically on
building client strengths and positive emotions,
increasing meaning of life in alleviating pathology and
in fostering happiness (Rashid in Magyar-Moe, 2009).
Therapy is aimed at eliciting and attending to positive
emotions and memories in discussions with clients,
while also engaging in discourse related to client
problems with the goal of integrating the positive and
negative together.
For example: a person who feels depressed because
she is harbouring guilt for having hurt a family member
might also be asked to consider times when she has
engaged in helping, or pro social behaviours toward
her loved one.
Positive psychology therapy is based upon the
following assumptions:
- All people are prone to mental illness while
simultaneously having an inherent capacity for
happiness. Such happiness and pathology develop
based upon the interactions between person and
environment. Clients are viewed as autonomous
and growth-oriented.
- Client strengths and positive emotions are as
genuine and as real as weakness, pathology and
negative emotions.
Key concepts of Positive Psychology:
The Broaden and Build Theory of positive
emotions is a key concept of Positive Psychology.
It explains the importance of positive emotions in
people’s lives as opposed to the most often used
focus on negative emotions e.g. survival.
Fredrickson (in Magyar-Moe, 2009) found positive
emotions to be just as important to our survival
and our ability to flourish as negative emotions.
Positive emotions broaden one’s repertoire of
thought-actions whereas negative emotions
narrow these repertoires (tunnel vision as evident
from our fight-flight responses).
The Build hypothesis where the focus is on the
variety of resources a person has built up over time
e.g. physical, social, intellectual and psychological
resources towards building enduring personal
resources.
The Undoing hypothesis: positive emotions have
the potential to undo lingering negative emotions.
Best friends and loved ones often help us find
meaning in the difficult experiences we face,
which also has the effect of increasing positive
emotions. We can help those who do not have
such intuition to understand the utility of eliciting
positive emotions when negative emotions are
lingering and getting in the way of one’s ability to
cope and move forward in life.
The Resilience hypothesis: Frederickson (Magyar-
Moe, 2009) found that positive emotions, through
their broadening affects, trigger upward spirals of
well-being which is the conceptual opposite of the
common notion of downward spirals of
depression. When people have negative
experiences and therefore negative affect
(emotion), they begin to experience tunnel vision
which often leads to negative, pessimistic thinking.
This negative thinking leads to more negative
affect (emotion) that can spiral downward very
quickly. In contrast, positive emotions take the
blinder off, allowing people to see more
possibilities and to think more optimistically.
Upward spirals of well-being serve to build one’s
toolbox of coping skills. Hence, those who
experience positive emotions more often are
better able to cope and are more resilient in the
face of adversities in life (Frederickson in Magyar-
Moe, 2009).
Confucius said that “Our greatest glory is not in
never falling, but in rising every time we fall”.
A study conducted after the 9/11 terrorist attack
asked participants to report their emotions in the
wake of the attacks, what they learned from the
attacks and how they felt about the future.
Almost all the participants reported feeling sad,
angry and afraid, yet those that had been
identified as resilient in a previous study, reported
feeling positive emotions in the wake of the
tragedy as well. They reported positive feelings
such as gratitude and optimism as they could find
goodness in people who were helping in the
aftermath of the event. Statistical analyses
showed that the tendency to feel positive
emotions buffered the resilient people against
depression.
The last of the related hypotheses, is the Flourish
hypothesis. To flourish is to live optimally and to
experience the good things in life such as personal
growth, generativity and resilience. It states that a
key predictor of human flourishing is the ratio of
positive to negative affect that one experiences
(Frederickson & Losada, 2009). For each negative
affective experience, one must experience 3
positive affective experiences over the course of
time to keep moving forward in life (relevant to
marriages and business teams).

Occupational therapy and sensory stimulation
Sensory intelligence is the insight and awareness of the
primitive sensory wiring of our brains and the effect it
has on everyday living. How we interpret and interact
with the world is the product of sensory filtering through
the senses. We see, hear, smell, taste, touch and move
and respond accordingly.
Functional performance difficulties due to sensory
modulation challenges or poor integration of sensation
can result from difficulties in how the nervous system
receives, organizes, and uses sensory information from
the body and the physical environment for self-
regulation, motor planning, and skill development.
These problems impact self-concept, emotional
regulation, attention, problem solving, behaviour
control, skill performance, and the capacity to develop
and maintain interpersonal relationships. In adults, they
may negatively impact the ability to parent, work, or
engage in home management, social, and leisure
activities.
Functional performance concerns due to poor integration and processing of sensation may occur in isolation, contribute to, or be comorbid with other conditions such as anxiety and panic disorders,
depression, posttraumatic stress disorder, or schizophrenia. Those with learning disabilities, attention deficit disorder, developmental disabilities, or autism spectrum disorders may also have these difficulties. Occupational therapists have unique training and skills in neuroscience, anatomy, and activity/environmental analysis to identify and treat occupational performance issues resulting from sensory modulation, sensory integration, motor, and psychosocial deficits in adults experiencing difficulties with sensory functions. They work with caregivers and medical, educational, and mental health professionals to increase awareness of the signs and symptoms of sensory-related problems and types of interventions used with adults.
