El 2018 ha llegado a su fin. Ha sido un año muy exitoso para

muchas de nuestras Federaciones Nacionales. En este boletín

presentamos estadísticas muy interesantes compiladas por

nuestro Secretario General. Esas cifras nos permitirán evaluar

cuándo hemos avanzado, pero, sobre todo, nos harán pensar

en todo lo que queda aún por hacer.

El 2019 nos traerá difíciles retos. Los Juegos Panamericanos

en Lima, y el Campeonato Mundial en Holanda, en el que se

otorgarán las primeras plazas para los Juegos Olímpicos de

Tokio, serán los dos eventos más importantes en los que

debemos tener destacadas actuaciones.

World Archery Americas hará todo lo posible por facilitar condiciones para que nuestros

mejores deportistas se preparen para enfrentar estos desafíos.

En nombre de World Archery Americas, les deseo a nuestras Asociaciones Miembros,

sus arqueros, entrenadores y jueces, un exitoso 2019.

2018 has come to an end. It has been a successful year for most of our National

Federations. This bulletin features some interesting statistics prepared by our Secretary

General, which will allow us to see how much we have improved, and mainly how much

is still to be done.

2019 will pose challenges that will be hard to meet. The Pan American Games in Lima,

and the World Championships in the Netherlands, where Olympic positions will be

allocated, are two major events we have to excel at.

World Archery Americas will do our best to create training possibilities for our best

archers to get prepare to face these challenges.

On behalf of World Archery Americas, I would like to wish our Member Associations,

their archers, coaches and judges, a very successful 2019.

Arqueros de América entre los mejores del 2018 / Archers from

the Americas among the best in 2018

Los listados de los 200 mejores deportistas en las Rondas de Clasificación en Eventos de

Ranking Mundial en el año 2018 han sido compilados y distribuidos a todas nuestras

Asociaciones Miembros. 123 arqueros de América figuran en estos selectos grupos.

Aunque esta cifra es inferior a la alcanzada en el 2017, nos enorgullece señalar que 17 de

nuestros países han logrado incluir al menos a un deportista. En el año anterior tuvimos

arqueros de 14 países solamente.

Trece países de América muestran un incremento en el número de arqueros en estos

listados si realizamos una comparación con los puestos alcanzados en el 2017. Un país

mantuvo la misma cantidad, y solo tres disminuyeron, no como evidencia de una baja en

la calidad, sino debido al hecho de que menos arqueros de estos países participaron en

eventos válidos para poder ser considerados para los Top 200.

The lists of the top 200 individual Qualification Round performers at World Ranking

Events in 2018 have been compiled and distributed to all of our Member Associations.

123 archers of the Americas managed to shoot scores that were high enough to be

included in these exceptional groups. Though this number is lower than the one achieved

in 2017, we are proud to say that 17 of our member associations included at least one

archer in 2018. In the previous year we had archers from 14 countries only.

Thirteen countries show an increase in the number of archers on the lists as compared to

the lists published at the end of 2017. One country kept the same number; and only three

show a reduction, caused not by a decrease in quality, but by the fact that fewer archers

from these national federations took part in events valid for Top-200 recognition.

Indoor World Series in Rome

Siete arqueros de Estados Unidos y Canadá ganaron medallas en el Roma Archery Trophy

2018, el tercer evento de la Indoor Archery World Series, en Roma, Italia, el domingo 16

de diciembre.

Tras empatar a 593/600 puntos en la ronda de clasificación, el canadiense Crispin

DUENAS y el estadounidense Brady ELLISON se ranquearon primero y segundo,

respectivamente, y luego se enfrentaron por el oro en el arco recurvo masculino.

El canadiense disparó un partido perfecto en tres sets de 30 puntos cada uno, para derrotar

a ELLISON 6 a 0. “Han sido unos días fantásticos. Di lo mejor de mí en la ronda de

clasificación y en las eliminatorias, pero tuve que esforzarme mucho en mis primeros

partidos. Después todo funcionó correctamente y gané esta gran medalla de Oro”, le

expresó Crispin a World Archery.

La final por el título de arco compuesto masculino entre el estadounidense Braden

GELLENTHIEN y el danés Martin DAMSBO se definió en un desempate.

GELLENTHIEN selló la victoria 10 a 9. Kris SCHAFF (USA) cayó en el match por el

bronce en una flecha de desempate ante el italiano Sergio PAGNI.

La joven Alexis RUIZ (USA) disputó su segunda final de la temporada internacional bajo

techo, y logró su segunda victoria consecutiva, esta vez frente a Mariya SHKOLNA de

Luxemburgo.

RUIZ se clasificó segunda con 590, y luego venció a Elena CRESPI (ITA), Viktoria

BALZHANOVA (RUS), Tanja JENSEN (DEN) y Song Yun SOO (KOR) para asegurar

su pase a la final, donde sacó 8 puntos de diferencia a SHKOLNA (147-139).

En la categoría de Longbow, Calvin SMOCK (USA) se llevó plata al caer en la final ante

el italiano Marco PONTREMOLESI 6 a 0.

Tras disparar record mundial de 594/600 puntos en la ronda de clasificación en el arco

Seven archers from the USA and Canada took medals at the 2018 Roma Archery Trophy,

the third stage of the 2019 Indoor Archery World Series in Rome, Italy, on December 16,

2018.

After seeding in the top two spots with a tied score of 593/600 points over the 60-arrow

18 meter ranking round, Canada’s Crispin DUENAS and USA’s Brady ELLISON went

head-to-head for the recurve men’s gold medal.

The Canadian shot a perfect three-set match, scoring nine perfect 10s to ELLISON’s two

European opponent with a closer to the center 10.

Compound lady Alexis RUIZ shot her second gold medal match in a row on the

International Indoor Circuit, and won her second consecutive title, this time versus

Luxembourg’s Mariya SHKOLNA.

RUIZ seeded second with 590/600 over qualification and then beat Elena CRESPI (ITA),

Viktoria BALZHANOVA (RUS), Tanja JENSEN (DEN), and Song Yun SOO (KOR) to

make it to the final, where she defeated SHKOLNA 147 to 139.

Calvin SMOCK (USA) won silver in the longbow men’s competition after losing to Marco

PONTREMOLESI (ITA) in a 6-0 final match.

Faith MILLER (USA), who set a new compound junior women’s World Record with

594/600 over the ranking round, beat Italian Sara RET by three points (144-141), to

secure her first gold of the season. Her teammate Jackson MIRICH took silver in the

recurve junior men’s competition.

The Indoor Archery World Series will be back in January 2019 with its fourth event in

Nimes, France.

on December 7th of Mr. Paris Goico, a former Dominican

archer and father of 2006 World Cadet Champion Paris

Goico de Lara. Mr. Goico represented the Dominican

Republic at the World Cups held in San Salvador in 2006,

and in Santo Domingo in 2008.

Our heart-felt condolences to his family and to the

Dominican Republic Archery Federation.

Islas Vírgenes / Virgin Islands – Campeonato Nacional /

National Championships

El Campeonato Nacional de las Islas Vírgenes se celebró en la Isla de St. Croix, el 1 de

diciembre con 21 arqueros que dispararon a diferentes distancias en correspondencia con

su nivel actual de pericia en el deporte. Nicholas D´Amour, quien representó a las Islas

Vírgenes en varios eventos de Ranking Mundial en el 2018, disparó el puntaje más alto

entre todos los participantes para asegurar la medalla de oro y el título de Campeón

Nacional.

The Virgin Islands National Championships were held on the Island of St Croix, on

December 1 with 21 participants who shot at different distances depending on their

current level of expertise. Nicholas D’Amour, who represented the Virgin Islands at

several World Ranking Events in 2018, shot the highest score among all the participants

to secure the Gold medal and the title of national champion.

Guyana – Campeonato Nacional Indoor / National Indoor

Championships

El Campeonato Nacional Indoor de Guyana se llevó a cabo en el Gimnasio Nacional el 2

de diciembre con la participación de deportistas de arco recurvo en eventos para hombres

y mujeres, incluyendo además categorías juveniles.

La competencia, auspiciada por la Comisión Nacional del Deporte, se desarrolló con

rondas de partidos en sistema de sets tanto en los eventos individuales como en los

equipos mixtos.

Archery Guyana se prepara para llevar a cabo su primer curso de formación de jueces

nacionales, que tendrá lugar del 5 al 7 de abril de 2019.

Archery Guyana’s National Indoor Championships were held at the National Gymnasium

on December 2nd, with recurve participants in both men and women’s categories,

including junior divisions.

The tournament, whose medals were sponsored by Guyana’s National Sports

Commission, featured set-system match play competition for individual and mixed team

events.

Archery Guyana currently prepares for their first National Judges Seminar, which will

take place on April 5-7.

Chile – Seminario de Preparación Mental / Mental Training

Seminar

Impartido por el Profesor Fernando LÓPEZ, del Departamento de Psicología del Deporte

de la Universidad JFK, California, se llevó a cabo un seminario de Preparación Mental

para entrenadores en Santiago de Chile del 1 al 4 de diciembre.

El seminario contó con la participación de 20 entrenadores de diferentes niveles de la

Federación Chilena, quienes quedaron muy satisfechos con la calidad de la capacitación

recibida.

A Mental Training Seminar for archery coaches was run by Prof. Fernando LOPEZ, from

the Department of Sports Psychology of the JFK University, California, in Santiago de

Chile on December 1-4.

The seminar was attended by 20 coaches of the Chilean Federation who work at different

levels. They were all very satisfied by the quality of the information received.

Cuba – Copa Cardín / Cardin Cup

Los mejores arqueros cubanos compitieron en la Copa Giraldo Córdova Cardín que se

celebró en La Habana del 17 al 20 de diciembre. La Ronda de Clasificación fue dominada

por el Olímpico de Río Adrián PUENTES (661) y por Elizabeth RODRIGUEZ (630).

Las rondas de partidos tuvieron como vencedores a la propia Elizabeth y al veterano de

50 años Juan Carlos STEVENS. La selección cubana se prepara para tomar parte en los

Juegos Panamericanos en Lima en el mes de agosto.

Cuba’s top archers competed at the Giraldo Córdova Cardín Cup held in Havana on

December 17-20. The Qualification round was dominated by 2016 Olympian Adrian

PUENTES (661) and by Elizabeth RODRIGUEZ (630). The match play round was taken

by RODRIGUEZ and by 50 year-old veteran Juan Carlos STEVENS. The Cuban team

prepares to compete at the Pan American Games in Lima next August.
