UNDERSTANDING THE GAME
“WHAT WAS THAT CALL THAT FOR?” “THERE WAS NO ADVANTAGE IN THAT?”
“WHY WASN’T THAT A GOAL?”
Unlike most sports when advantage is awarded by a referee in water polo regardless of the outcome the
ball cannot be taken back
“WHY IS THAT A TURN OVER?” A turn over is called for several reasons: -‐ Offensive foul -‐ Pushing, grabbing, holding the defending player -‐ Ball under (completely submerged under the water while being tackled) -‐ Being offside – inside the 2m area without the ball while aEacking -‐ If a player is awarded a free throw and doesn’t take it promptly -‐ End of possession clock (30 Seconds)
“HOW IS THAT NOT A FOUL?”
“HOW COME HE GOT SENT TO THE CORNER?”
A player can be excluded for a major foul This includes:
-‐ Hold, sink or pull back an opponent that prohibits an aEacking movement -‐ Exclusions are situaPonal
-‐ Using two hands to block for a shot or pass
-‐ The move by the player or any other player prior to the goal may have resulted in a turn over (see above).
-‐ ShooPng aRer faking or delay of free throw from outside 5m. -‐ The ball didn’t completely cross the goal line.
NEW RULES: FINA (our governing body) is implemenPng some new rules in junior age groups in 2015. Changes include: 11 players per team, 6 in the water, size #4 (women’s) ball for both genders, 25m water polo set up for both genders.
PLEASE NOTE:
Referees must call
situaPons ho
w
they see them
and their dec

is final.
A foul is: A minor foul is the result of a defending player’s aEempt to go for
the ball but in doing so impedes onto the aEacking player. The aQacking player MUST let go of the ball to receive a foul.
* TacPcally fouls are used to slow down play.

NATIONAL TEAMS PROGRAMME
NZL The NaPonal Teams Programme (NTP) provides an elite training and
compePPon environment of excellence. The goal is to develop and prepare NZ water polo players for internaPonal success.
I would like to introduce myself. My name is Eelco Uri and I am the NTP Director. I have had a long career in water polo, as a player, coach and an administrator. Having played professionally in France, Switzerland, Kuwait and Greece and over 250 tests for the Netherlands, including several European and World Championships and two Olympic Games, I know what it takes to make it in our sport. It is my role is to assist this young generaPon in reaching their goals and aspiraPons, and help them to become the best water polo player they can be.
On behalf of the NZ NaPonal Teams Programme (NTP) I would like to welcome all players, coaches, managers and parents to these 2014 Under 14 NaPonal Champs.
CongratulaPons to the players for making it to these naPonal championships; I know it takes a lot of dedicaPon and hard work to make it this far. Well done.
