Her voice sounds at numerous recordings, and in fi lm, too: as Katrena in Suchoň’s opera Th e Whirlpool, or as Emma Destiné in a biographical fi lm Th e Divine Emma. Her partner at the tonight’s concert dedicated to her jubilee is Marián Lapšanský, excellent and world-renowned pianist, and by a coincidence celebrating his jubilee, too.

Grešák: Amoebae R. Strauss: Violin Concerto in D Minor Op. 8 P. I. Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 2 in C Minor Op. 17 ‘Little Russian’

Th is year we commemorate a centenary of the East Slovakian composer Jozef Grešák. Th e premiere of the piece Amoebae by the State Philharmonic Košice (then conducted by Bystrík Režucha) brought him the fi rst remarkable success and rightful attention of musical public. Richard Strauss was just seventeen, when he composed a technically exacting violin concerto D Minor fi lled by virtuoso passages and young expressiveness. It is performed by a hothead Pavel Šporcl, who is a propagator and popularizer of music labelled as “classical” among the young. Pirate of stages, enfant terrible of classical music, a musician-warrior, these are some of epithets given to the musician by critique and British monthly Gramophone adds, that Šporcl is one of the most charismatic violinists of today. At the end of the concert the symphony called by Tchaikovsky “Th e Crane” will sound. He was inspired by an Ukrainian folk song of the same title and the piece was a success even at its premiere.

A guest performance of this chamber orchestra, initiated by ministries of culture of both countries and the cities of Toulouse and Bratislava, could be named French–Slovak Eve-ning. Both cities aspire to a title of “European City of Culture 2013”. Th eir close connection can be demonstrated by a fact, that the Eugen Suchoň’s composition will be performed by the orchestra in Toulouse, too, in March 2008. Th e soloist Staff an Martensson is the holder of the title Th e Best Soloist of the 2007 in Sweden, awarded for his best CD recor-ding for the Swedish Radio in 2006, nominated for MIDEM 2007.7.30 pm Concert Hall of the Slovak Philharmonic Symphonic Orchestra Danubia Slovak Philharmonic Choir conductor: Tamás Gál choirmaster: Blanka Juhaňáková soloists: Henrietta Lednárová, soprano Eva Garajová, mezzo-soprano Ľudovít Ludha, tenor Vladimír Chmelo, baritone F. Liszt: Missa solennis (Festive Esztergom Mass) Searle 9

Since the beginnings of his career Liszt speculated about church music. His programme from youth he realized in two great instrumental masses. “In recent weeks I immersed fully into my mass. I do not know, how it would sound, but I can say that I was much more praying than composing when working on it,” Franz Liszt wrote to Richard Wagner aft er putting fi nishing touches to the piece determined to celebrate the consecration of the Esztergom Basilica in 1856. Th is fully Romantic piece was reproached for its excessive secularity. Shortly aft er the premiere the mass was performed in Budapest, too, and satis-fi ed Liszt confessed: “the performance aroused amazing emotions and many wept.”

Sunday, December 24.00 pm Concert Hall of the Slovak Philharmonic Choral Concert ‘Hommage à Hrušovský’ Th e Bratislava City Choir Lúčnica Chorus Bratislava Boys Choir choirmaster and conductor: Ladislav Holásek choirmasters: Elena Matušová, Magdaléna Rovňáková soloists: Božena Ferancová, soprano Tomáš Juhás, tenor Martin Malachovský, bass guest performers: Katarína Turnerová, harp Jozef Podhoranský, cello Vojtech Kovács, double-bass Peter Mikula, organ I. Hrušovský selection from choral music C. Franck: Messe à 3 voix, in A Major Op. 12 for 3 solo voices (soprano, tenor and bass), choir, organ, harp, cello and double bass op. 12 FWV 61

An exponent of Slovak music moderna Ivan Hrušovský would be eighty this year. Musicians and singing choirs members remember him with respect. He dedicated his pieces to many of the choirs; pieces unique by their sound, by which they enchanted listeners at home as well as at international stages. César Franck composed his Mass A Major in 1860. Motet Panis Angelicus was included later into the composition (aft er 1872, when the movement ori-ginated) and it replaced a part of mass ordinary Benedictus. Th e motet from this mass is well-known, as it is oft en performed by famous soloists independently, too. Th e mass will capture the listeners by its Romantic musical language, melodic beauty and nobleness of the whole, as well as by unusual orchestration.

Shostakovich: Piano Trio No. 2 in E Minor Op. 67 P. I. Tchaikovsky: Piano Trio in A Minor ‘A la mèmoire d‘un grand artiste’ Op. 50

Dream Trio – one of epithets given by the critique to tonight musicians. Boris Berezovskij – his musical debut in 1988 was appreciated by the daily Th e Times as a performance of an extraordinary promising artist possessing gleamy virtuosity and unbelievable power. Th e promise was fulfi lled two years later, when he was awarded the Golden Medal at the P. I. Tchaikovsky International Competition. Since that time his success has been growing; recently he acquired the “BBC Music Magazine Award 2006” as the best instrumentalist of the year. Similarly Alexander Kniazev was awarded the title Musician of the year 1999 in Russia. Dmitrij Machtin, too, is giving his concerts alternatively in Russia, America and Europe. All three meet and make strikingly impressive music, e.g. they recorded Shostakovich’s Trio No. 2 and Rakhmaninov’s Trio Elégiaque No. 2 for Warner Classics International, which was awarded the “Choc de la Musique” prize in France, award of the Gramophone in England and of the Echo Classic Awards in Germany. Th eir DVD with Tchaikovsky’s pieces including the “A la mémoire d´un grand artiste” has acquired the Diapason d´Or prize and it was broadcast by TV stations ARTE and NHK in Japan.

Th e name of the orchestra Wiener Symphoniker is an advertisement in itself. Not only lovers of melodies know that the name guarantees an evening fi lled by brilliant performing and unfor-gettable moments. Th e list of its conductors is star-studded – since 2005 the chief conductor has been Fabio Luisi, following in rich traditions left by Karajan, Sawalisch or Giulini. Th e deman-ding programme of the evening includes both Romantic and avant-garde compositions, and it is crowned by colourful musical stream of Rhine, changing images into tremendous rippling of the orchestra. Th e orchestra Wiener Symphoniker comes to BMF for 7th time in latest 35 years – in 1994 for the last time.

We may call the tonight concert an American-Slovak evening; a phenomenal performer Andrew Brownell is a holder of many awards from prestigious international competitions. A young Slovak conductor Martin Majkút, who is studying and conducting in U.S.A. has con-

BHS_sklad2007_V2_modre_Aj.indd 10HS_sklad2007_V2_modre_Aj.indd 10 10/11/07 2:36:48 PM10/11/07 2:36:48 PM

tacted him as well as Joseph Kolkovich, a Slovak-American composer and versatile instrumen-talist. Kolkovich emigrated in 1979, since 1980 he has been living in San Diego in California. At fi rst a rock player, he returned to the music paper aft er rock had abandoned progressive ambitions. Th is autumn Miroslav Dvorský appeared as a guest at several prestigious stages: in San-tiago de Chile (Madama Butterfl y), Dresden (Cinderella), Valencia (Carmen under the baton of Lorin Maazel). 2008 is the Puccini Year, and Dvorský will sing in Milan in La Scala (opera Il Tabarro) conducted by Riccardo Chailly. Debuts in La Scala and Covent Garden are his profi ts of this year. Th e sunny tenor of Miroslav Dvorský will resonate in well-known as well as in less staged opera works. A guest of the evening is a soprano Adriana Kučerová, whose name shines at posters of opera and concert events.

Wednesday, December 55.00 pm Small Hall of the Slovak Philharmonic Bratislava Wind Octet artistic leader: Ján Budzák J. Družecký, I. Bázlik, L. Kupkovič, J. N. Hummel

7.30 pm Concert Hall of the Slovak Philharmonic SWR Sinfonieorchester Baden-Baden und Freiburg conductor: Heinrich Schiff soloist: Gidon Kremer, violin S. Gubajdulina: ‘Off ertorium’ – Violin Concerto G. Mahler: Symphony No.1 in D Major ‘Titan’

An artist and a distinctive personage Gidon Kremer was still a pupil of David Oistrach, when he won Tchaikovsky’s and Paganini’s competitions. Today he himself supports young musicians (e.g. in Kremerata Baltica ensemble). He has been an inspiring personality for many contempora-ry composers (Schnittke, Pärt, Nono, Reimann). His Nicolo Amati instrument from 1641 will sound in Sofi a Gubajdulina’s piece, dedicated to him. SWR Sinfonieorchester Baden-Baden und Freiburg was conducted by famous musicians – Stravinsky, Pierre Boulez… Heinrich Schiff will conduct Mahler in the second part of the night. Th e composer admitted passionate love as an impetus for his First Symphony, an unhappy Kassel romance with a young singer. However, it was just a starting point, not contents of the piece, Mahler added.

Th ursday, December 65.00 pm Concert Hall of Klarisky Church Il Fondamento artistic leader: Paul Dombrecht G. Ph. Telemann: Christmas and Advent Cantatas

In the time when Johann Sebastian Bach was considered just an excellent organist and improvi-ser, Telemann’s music was admired in all European countries from France to Russia. Telemann composed with virtuoso ease and the extent of his output is really imposing. His versatility is proved by many cantatas, rich opera creation and passions. Th e Belgique ensemble Il Fonda-mento specialized in this kind of music comes to Bratislava in the frame of its European tour.

Emmanuel Krivine, Laureate of International Tribune of Young Performers in Bratislava in 1972 (today New Talent – SPP Prize) as a violinist, will hold the baton tonight. Th e same year Nikolaj Lugansky was born in Moscow, a present sought-aft er guest of world concert stages. Together they will perform the Prokofi ev’s Piano Concerto, which the composer composed being only 20; still, it possesses monumental sound and rich virtuoso piano technique.

Friday, December 77.30 pm Concert Hall of the Slovak Philharmonic Closing Concert of the 43rd BMF Slovak Philharmonic Slovak Philharmonic Choir conductor: Peter Feranec choirmaster: Jaroslav Brych soloists: Juraj Čižmarovič, violin Martina Masaryková, soprano Otokar Klein, tenor Gustáv Beláček, baritone J. Brahms: Tragic Overture Op. 81 I. Zeljenka: Violin Concerto No. 3 premiere Ch. Gounod: Messe solennelle de Sainte Cécile

“As a young man I searched for a meaning of music, I endeavoured to utter a sad and tragical feeling of a lonely man. In recent years I have found a joyful, playful and well-ordered music. Like in a tale – a sphere of pure music is like a water of life. It is such intensive and infectious inspiration for me, that in latest years I feel almost immersed in music,” confessed Ilja Zeljenka his relation to music. He dedicated his Th ird Violin Concerto to Juraj Čižmarovič and it will be premiered, unfortunately, in the absence of the composer, who passed away this summer. “For future generations Messe solennelle de St. Cécile, too, will be an evidence of a superb musici-an who made France famous in 19th century,” Camille Saint-Saëns said about his countryman Charles Gounod. Th e mass honouring a patroness saint of music, St Cecilia, is a symbolical full stop, closing the 43rd year of the most signifi cant festival in Slovakia. Th e evening will be conducted by Peter Feranec, the new chief conductor of the Slovak Philharmonic.
