The latest crime statistics to be released cover the period from April 2011 to March 2012 In Bonnievale, compared to the year before, statistics show a decrease in contact crimes such as murder, assault and sexual offences, but a rise in burglaries. Captain Bertus Con- radie, commander of Bonnievale Police Sta- tion, says the drop in contact crimes is due to police operations and awareness campaigns on sexual crimes and abuse. During June and July 2011, Conradie says, there was an increase in burglaries, but he adds that a number of arrests were made in this re- gard. He says that most of the perpetrators were youths who have now been incorporated into safety programmes like the Vangnet Project. Initiated in April this year, the Vang- net programme aims to empower youths at risk of becoming drug addicts and criminals, and so uplifts the community as a whole. Youths are empowered through various activities, in- cluding the discipline of boxing, offered by a club recently started in conjunction with the World Boxing Organisation. Since the project’s inception, Conradie says, there has been a drop in drug-related crimes. The crime statistics for McGregor reflect a drop in burglaries. But Captain Mzwamdile Gqubi, commander of McGregor Police Sta- tion, says that in the past three months, burgla- ries have increased by 200%. This translates into over 29 reported burglaries. He says the increase can be attributed to the release of prisoners from several facilities ear- lier in the year, but he adds that many solid arrests have been made. Gqubi says crime in McGregor is mostly mo- tivated by drug and alcohol dependency, and that police are addressing the issue. In the Ashton policing precinct there was a drop in reported murders, but a strong in- crease in residential burglaries. Warrant Offi- cer Johannes Prins, acting station commander for the Ashton police, says many of these bur- glaries took place at RDP houses where limited security precautions are in place. The burglars targeted small items. Once again, unemployment, drug and alco- hol dependency were listed as causes for crime. Prins, however, says the community has been very helpful with feeding through drug-related tip-offs, which have led to arrests. In Montagu, contact crimes have dropped by 14,4% overall – with assault having dropped significantly – but crime did show increases in some categories, such as murder. Captain Norman Evertson, commander of the Montagu police, says visible policing contributed to the drop in contact crimes; he adds that the local officers have been focusing on sector policing. Although reported burglaries dropped during the previous financial year, as reflected in the statistics, Evertson says there has been a sharp increase in burglaries since April. He says a number of arrests have shown that many were committed by people from outside Montagu. Robertson’s crime statistics, although very similar to previous years’, show an increase in both residential and business burglaries. But Lieutenant Cynthia Mngcele, spokesper- son for the Robertson police, says contact crimes have dropped. She says this is because police operations at illegal shebeens, along with regular foot patrols, have proven success- ful. Mngcele says police are also involved in awareness campaigns on sexual crimes and the safety of women. . See page 3 for the statistics. among workers. I would like to seetheinfluenceofthegangsandalcoholonourcommunitydiminish. Iwouldlike to see a multi-culture in ourchurches, where communities, col-oured and white, worship together.
