    FAKE AUTOBIORA!"IE#

In March 2008, a book calledLove and Consequenceswas published. It was written by Margaret . !ones, who claimed

that she was hal" white and hal" #ati$e %merican and that at the age o" eight, she was sent to li$e with a "oster "amily.

&he described how she sold drugs "or a local gang and how she carried illegal guns. 'he book achie$ed widespread success,

yet the entire story turned out to be "ake. 'he woman posing as (Margaret !ones) was in reality Margaret &el*er, who is

white and grew up in a prosperous neighbourhood with her biological "amily.

II 'his isn+t the "irst autobiography to be exposed as a "ake. et what causes people to in$ent these "ictitious li"e stories-

Many belie$e that people simply do it "or the money. Personal stories written by people about their troubled childhoods

ha$e become increasingly popular in recent years, so some writers may well want to take ad$antage o" this booming trend.

III urthermore, since many publishing houses are going out o" business due to a decrease in the number o" readers, it has

become extremely di""icult "or "iction writers to succeed. It+s possible that some writers choose to in$ent a con$incing

autobiography in the hope that the current obsession with reading true stories will help their book become success"ul.

IV Publishers ha$e been widely criticised "or allowing books to be published without /uestioning their accuracy. ook

publishers, unlike their colleagues in the newspaper industry, appear to do almost nothing to check the accuracy o" what

they print. 'hey tend to rely solely on the author+s honesty and don+t make any e""ort to discredit these (real) stories.

V Perhaps it+s the obsession with reading true stories about people+s li$es that+s causing writers to in$ent them. owe$er,

as long as a story is entertaining, does it really matter whether it+s "ictional or real-
