    Not many people are aware that Jakarta is alsoblessed with romantic tropical islands-getaway, far away from busy and noisy city streets.

    The string of islands that lie in the Bay of Jakarta are knownas Pulau Seribu, or the Thousand Islands, which together formthe Pulau Seribu National Park. Comprising - not quite onethousand, but some 110 large and small islands, they stretchfrom the nearest island called Pulau Ayer to those far out intothe Java Sea like Pulau Putri, Pulau Sepa and Pulau Hantu.Some 20 islands are tourist resorts, with only 6 islands havinglocal inhabitants. The District capital of Pulau Seribu is at PulauPramuka, located right in the midst of this cluster.

    The Thousand Islands are the natural water and beachplaygrounds for Jakarta citizens. The islands each offerdifferent types of recreation from just beach combing, boating,

    jet skiing and snorkeling, to shing and scuba-diving furtherout to sea.

    To make your holiday complete, here are alsoDutch colonial vestiges to explore inarchaeological parks as well as nature reservesfor breeding of hawksbill turtles and protectionof mangrove forests.

    Several types of ora and fauna frequently found in theThousand Islands include coral reefs, starsh, sand starsh,Betok sh (Anabas Testudineus Bloch) and onamental sh suchas the Sargent Major sh among others.

    Regular boats leave Marina Ancol to the various islandsat 8.0am and 9.0 am, returning around 1.0 pm or 2.0 pm.Speedboats are also available for rent. There are also specialdepartures to the tourist resorts.

    The Paradiso Islands of Pulau Ayer,Bidadari, and Untung Jawa

    Islands nearest and within a half an hourreach from Jakartas Marina in Ancol are theislands of Bidadari, Ayer, Untung Jawa.

    These are recreation resorts, that comecomplete with cottages, and water sportsfacilities such as banana boats, jet skis andmore. On Pulau Ayer are cottages thatoat on the sea with interior decorations ofexotic Asmat textiles and sculptures.

    Pulau Onrust

    And while you are islandhopping, visit Onrust,which is a heritage andarchaeological park. In 1613Onrust island used to be ashipyard for Dutch vessels,and later became Bataviasdefense against foreigninvaders.

    Today one can still seeremnants of the fortresscalled the Martello Bastionat Pulau Kelor.

    The Island of Pulau Putri is some 2 hoursaway from Marina Ancol, It has white beachesand is surrounded by coral reefs ideal fordiving in. The island comes complete withfacitlities for diving, glass bottom boats, anundersea Aquarium and offers sunset cruises

    Pulau Sepa is also blessed with whitebeaches and clear waters for diving andangling. Here you can try a marine walk,where visitors can walk along the bottomof the sea to enjoy the underwater sea lifearound without having to dive. Other facilitiesinclude ying fox and other outbound sports.

    Pulau Pramuka, Pulau Kotok and Pulau Tidung

    Pulau Pramuka, in the midst of Pulau Seribu is the seatof the islands district government. This island, therefore,has the largest population and the best amenities,including internet connections.
