BULLETIN DE VEILLE GEOSCOPIE n°46 – Décembre 2016
Edito

- 2016 - Separation and Purification Technology - SCHOOL COLORADO MINES (USA); UNIV FED UBERLANDIA (BRAZIL) -
Development of unconventional oil and gas (O and G) resources through hydraulic fracturing has surged in recent
years. While declines in oil prices have temporarily reduced spending towards research and development of
innovative water management techniques, regulations and expected increase in freshwater demand and cost are
intensifying competition among treatment providers to develop sustainable and efficient strategies for wastewater...
Removal of Radium from Synthetic Shale Gas Brines by Ion Exchange Resin - 2016 - Environmental Engineering Science
- UNIV MICHIGAN (USA) - Rapid development of hydraulic fracturing for natural gas production from shale reservoirs
presents a significant challenge related to the management of the high-salinity wastewaters that return to the surface.
In addition to high total dissolved solids (TDS), shale gas-produced brines typically contain elevated concentrations
of radium (Ra), which must be treated properly to prevent contamination of surface waters and allow for safe
disposal...

The Demo-CO2 project: Monitoring and comparison of two shallow subsurface CO2 leakage experiments with gas
tracer associated in the carbonate vadose zone - 2016 - International Journal of Greenhouse Gas Control - ADEME
(FRANCE); ALGADE (FRANCE); DIMELCO (FRANCE); IFP ENERGIES NOUVELLES (FRANCE); INP BORDEAUX (FRANCE) - A
shallow CO2 injection experiment was performed on a pilot site near Bordeaux, France, in February 2015. A gas
mixture composed of approximatively 90% CO2 and 5% of each He and Kr as gas tracers was injected through a
vertical well, with low injection rate, at 1.80 m depth and into the carbonate vadose zone. A set of geochemical
monitoring tools was installed in order to monitor the developing gas plume and to allow comparison between this...
Field testing of modular borehole monitoring with simultaneous distributed acoustic sensing and geophone vertical

(USA); SILIXA (UK) - A modular borehole monitoring concept has been implemented to provide a suite of well-based
monitoring tools that can be deployed cost effectively in a flexible and robust package. The initial modular borehole
monitoring system was deployed as part of a CO2 injection test operated by the Southeast Regional Carbon
Sequestration Partnership near Citronelle, Alabama. The Citronelle modular monitoring system transmits electrical
power and signals,...
A stochastic inversion workflow for monitoring the distribution of CO2 injected into deep saline aquifers - 2016 -
Computational Geosciences - CTR EAU TERRE ENVIRONNEMENT (CANADA); INST NATL RECHERCHE SCIENTIFIQUE
(CANADA); UNIV LAUSANNE (SWITZERLAND) - We present a two-step stochastic inversion approach for monitoring the
distribution of CO2 injected into deep saline aquifers for the typical scenario of one single injection well and a
database comprising a common suite of well logs as well as time-lapse vertical seismic profiling (VSP) data. In the first
step, we compute several sets of stochastic models of the elastic properties using conventional sequential Gaussian
co-simulations (SGCS)...

The role of passive sampling in monitoring the environmental impacts of produced water discharges from the
Norwegian oil and gas industry - 2016 - Marine Pollution Bulletin - DEPT APPLIED ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES ITM
(SWEDEN); INST NORWEGIAN GEOTECHNICAL NGI (NORWAY); UNIV NORWEGIAN LIFE SCIENCES (NORWAY); UNIV
UTRECHT (NETHERLANDS) - Stringent and periodic iteration of regulations related to the monitoring of chemical
releases from the offshore oil and gas industry requires the use of ever changing, rapidly developing and
technologically advancing techniques. Passive samplers play an important role in water column monitoring of
produced water (PW) discharge to seawater under Norwegian regulation, where they are used to; i) measure
aqueous concentrations of pollutants, ii)...
Assessing the likelihood and magnitude of volcanic explosions based on seismic quiescence - 2016 - Earth and
Planetary Science Letters - DEPT GEOSCIENCES (USA); INST NICARAGUENSE ESTUDIOS TERRITORIALES (NICARAGUA);
INSTITUTION CARNEGIE FOR SCIENCE (USA); UNIV ICELAND (ICELAND); UNIV OXFORD (UK) - Volcanic eruptions are
generally forecast based on strong increases in monitoring parameters such as seismicity or gas emissions above a
relatively low background level (e.g., Voight, 1988; Sparks, 2003). Because of this, forecasting individual explosions
during an ongoing eruption, or at persistently restless volcanoes, is difficult as seismicity, gas emissions, and other
indicators of unrest are already in a heightened state. Therefore,...
The influence of curvature on threedimensional mineralized matrix formation under static and perfused conditions:
An in vitro bioreactor model - 2016 - Journal of the Royal Society Interface - INST FOR BIOMECHANICS (SWITZERLAND);
UNIV EINDHOVEN TECH (NETHERLANDS) - Bone remodelling is the continuous turnover of bone by resorption and
formation. It is controlled by interstitial fluid flow sensed by osteocytes. The refilling of bone resorption sites has been
shown to be curvature driven. In vitro, curvature influences tissue growth and cytoskeletal arrangements under static
and perfused conditions. Nevertheless, this has only been demonstrated for non-mineralized tissue in limited three-
dimensional volumes....
The effect of CO2-enriched brine injection on the mechanical properties of calcite-bearing sandstone - 2016 -
International Journal of Greenhouse Gas Control - UNIV LEEDS (UK) - The mechanical and fluid-flow response of
subsurface geological reservoirs due to injection of CO2 is of critical importance for the safe management and
storage of anthropogenic carbon emissions. Although the time-lapse seismic method has proven to be an effective
tool to remotely monitor changes in underground fluid saturations, variations in reservoir properties caused by
geochemical interactions can also influence the seismic response. This...
Noble gas fractionation during subsurface gas migration - 2016 - Earth and Planetary Science Letters - UNIV TEXAS
AUSTIN (USA) - Environmental monitoring of shale gas production and geological carbon dioxide (CO2) storage
requires identification of subsurface gas sources. Noble gases provide a powerful tool to distinguish different sources
if the modifications of the gas composition during transport can be accounted for. Despite the recognition of
compositional changes due to gas migration in the subsurface, the interpretation of geochemical data relies largely
on...
