FROM THE RABBIRABBI ETHAN H. WITKOVSKY

As if . . .

A s much as our tradition is grounded in history and focused on the present

moment, it also challenges us to imagine “what if?’

In one of her comments in The New American Haggadah, Rebecca Newberger Goldstein tells us:

Haggadah means narration, and tonight’s celebration insists on the moral seriousness of the stories that we tell about ourselves. Stories are easily dismissible as distractions, the make-believe we craved as children, losing ourselves in the sweet enchantment of “as if.” “As if” belongs to the imagination, that wild terrain governed by no obvious rules.

I have always loved this idea that stories bring us into a world of “as if,” where we imagine what it would be like to be something or somewhere else. Recently there have been interesting studies on the role that reading fiction plays in creating the capacity for empathy. The same question can be applied to our holidays and rituals.

In their book Ritual and Its Consequences, four professors suggest that the point of most rituals is to stimulate the “as if,” to foster the ability to imagine a different world. Shabbat invites us to imagine a world without work. In such a world what would we do? How would we spend our time? On Sukkot I imagine what it would be like if I lived in a sukkah and not in a weatherproof apartment. The “as if” worlds created by our rituals

pull us outside of our normal lives to feel and learn something new about ourselves and the world around us.

The holidays of this season explicitly create “as if” worlds. Purim asks us to imagine ourselves as something or someone else. We put on a costume and, in encountering the world as if we were someone else, we find out about aspects of ourselves that are buried below the surface. On Pesah, we are commanded to feel “as if we came out of Egypt ourselves.” As we consider what it might have been like to be a slave and to escape, we hope to gain renewed awareness of suffering and gratitude for our freedom. We are commanded time and time again to be kind to the stranger for we were strangers in the land of Egypt. Our time spent in the world of “as if” will hopefully grow our empathy for others and lead us to care for the oppressed.

Here at PAS we are about to enter our own experience of “as if,” as we leave our offices, classrooms, and meeting rooms at 87th and Madison (but not the Sanctuary) to inhabit temporary quarters on 90th Street. (See p. 10.) The move at the end of April asks us not only to imagine but also to experience our community in a different space. As our community wears the “costume” of the temporary building, we will reveal hidden aspects of PAS and discover unknown potential. As at Pesah, we will experience a glimmer of what it is like to be displaced, and hopefully this small taste will help us find empathy for others. I look forward to entering this “as if” world together.

Transition at PAS

S top by 50 E. 87th Street, and you will notice a great deal of activity in addition to our robust

programmatic and worship offerings. We are preparing to move to our temporary space at 4 E. 90th Street, located around the block behind our new Eli M. Black Lifelong Learning Center. There are cardboard boxes stacked in the offices and large trash and recycling bins in the hallways. We are sorting materials and cleaning out our offices, closets, and corridors – a once-in-a-generation housecleaning!

In late April, staff offices will relocate to our temporary space. Programs and worship, except for Shabbat and holiday services in the Sanctuary, will move to the Eli M. Black Lifelong Learning Center and our temporary space. (The PASECC will move to the temporary space after the academic year ends in late May.) While our space will be different, the clergy and staff, worship and programs will remain the same. We will begin our days with morning minyan and conclude them with educational programs, committee meetings, and music rehearsals.

Event locations will be announced in our weekly This Week at PAS email and Shabbat Shalom handout. Our website, pasyn.org, also indicates

locations of all services and programs. You can find updates about the transition at pasyn.org/transition, where we will answer frequently asked questions about the move and our temporary space.

We encourage you to visit our temporary space beginning in May. Karen Harris and Robert Martin, our receptionists, will be there to greet you. We and the PAS staff are available to answer your questions. You can reach us at our current phone numbers and email addresses, which will remain the same!

Annual PAS Zayin Class ExhibitionMar 12–Apr 6Opening | Tue | Mar 13 | 5:30 pm

I n this year’s seventh grade photography elective, students have explored their Jewish identity. They have made photographs

that explore Jewish values and concepts such as prayer, holidays, and nature, and they have taken portraits and candid images of speakers who shared stories of discovering and developing their own identities. As the Zayin learners prepare to turn thirteen and celebrate their Bnei Mitzvah, they are taking their first independent steps in the Jewish journey their parents have set them on.

The entire class collaborated on how best to photograph PAS Housekeeping Supervisor Stephany Rodriguez, who immigrated to the US from the Dominican Republic.

Our temporary home at 90th Street includes a lovely library space where the Park Avenue Synagogue Library will reopen after the move. To keep materials accessible to the Congregational School during the spring holidays, much of our children’s collection will be housed at the Eli M. Black Lifelong Learning Center during the last weeks of the school year. Visit pasyn.org/rothschildlibrary to locate library items, and come to the library or to PAS@89th to check them out.

POSTCARD FROM CAMP

The Jewish Way to Broadway

S tarring on Broadway this year are several Ramah alumni who attribute their artistic success to their Jewish camping experience. Sharone Sayegh,

now originating the role of Anna in “The Band’s Visit,” went to Ramah California, as did Ben Platt, who won the Tony Award for “Dear Evan Hansen.” Ethan Slater (Ramah New England) is starring as Spongebob Squarepants and Caissie Levy (Ramah Canada) will play Elsa in “Frozen” this spring.

Ramah’s warm and supportive atmosphere helps campers take risks and develop confidence, especially since Ramah musicals are performed in Hebrew. Campers are also inspired since these summers are suffused with music, from spirited renditions of Birkat Ha-mazon to lively onegs and Havdalah by the lake.

This spring, children at PAS can experience this artistic energy through the Ramah Performance Academy, a joint initiative of PAS and Ramah Day Camp in Nyack. Free weekly sessions help children expand their creativity and confidence through acting, singing, dancing, and improvisation. If you have any questions regarding this program or Jewish camping, please contact Jewish Camping Committee chair Lynne Bermont at [email protected] or Hallie Chandler, Director of Youth Programming and Engagement, at [email protected].
