b) RESEARCH

1. My early research activities were based on the appraisal, presentation, management of breast cancer patients in an urban setting in Africa. One of my research work addresses the prevalence and correlates of depressive disorders in outpatients with breast cancer in Lagos, Nigeria. I found a high rate of associated depression among patients with breast cancer; this disorder is usually left untreated and may affect the complications of breast cancer.

2. Several of my studies document the survival rate of breast cancer in developing countries published. The effect of poverty, late presentations and cultural inclinations were taken into consideration. I teamed up with other medical researchers to investigate the role of hospital based cancer registries (HBCR) in low and middle income countries, such as Nigeria. My research showed that the information provided by HBCR is beneficial and can be utilized for the improvement of cancer care delivery systems.

3 .I have also participated in a study on the impact of radiotherapy on survival of breast cancer patients. It was observed that the five year survival rate in Lagos Nigeria is relatively poor compared to most countries in the world. The poor survival rate is attributed to factors such as late presentation, the effectiveness of Radiotherapy in survival of breast cancer and poor follow up. Makanjuola S.B., Popoola A.O., Mobolaji O. Oludara M.O. (2014) Radiation Therapy: A major factor in the five year survival analysis of women with breast cancer in Lagos, Nigeria. J. Radiotherapy and Oncology 111:321-326. An investigation on the level of adherence to cytotoxic drugs by breast cancer patients was carried out. The result of the investigation shows that the awareness of the oncologist and patients to the problem of non-adherence and communication regarding the importance of adherence to therapy may improve health outcomes.
