Internet, cloud, social media – the digital age has transformed the way in which customers research, evaluate, acquire and utilize products and services. In turn, companies need to be able to transform their own businesses to respond to continuous change.

Software providers must also adapt to the same challenges, as Mahendra Durai, Senior Vice President of IT at CA Technologies GIS explains, “The profi le of our customer has changed. In this evolved digital market place, where buying patterns are continuously changing, we have to constantly pivot, adapting our business processes, practices and delivery at a dynamic pace to be relevant in the market and for our customers and employees.”

To address this reality, GIS had to adapt and transform. Historically, the organization had built its software/system development life cycle delivery predominantly on the waterfall approach. Agile was being adopted in small pockets and teams were seeing the benefi ts of improved delivery. They realized that a waterfall approach to delivery would be a deterrent to their ability to deliver with speed and purpose and made the decision to adopt agile at scale.

CA Technologies GIS organization decided to standardize its delivery approach, both for development and operational initiatives on the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe®), using CA Agile Central to support the transformation.

Mahendra comments, “Agile equips organizations with the mindset, processes and techniques to be able to adapt and deliver in a continually changing landscape. It fi ts with our ambition to drive continuous transformation and not just solve today’s problems, but also be prepared to address tomorrow’s challenges.”

As an independent software vendor, CA Technologies employs approximately 6,000 employees who are focused on developing its products, who also use Agile at Scale. In addition, business teams in marketing are also using agile to deliver on their goals and objectives. This synergy, enabled by CA Agile Central, which streamlines and accelerates the adoption, is transforming the company. The usability and effectiveness of the solution helps drive the transformation, where agile adoption enabled by CA Agile Central, has progressed from 30 percent to 90 percent across GIS in just six months.

“The organization is using CA Agile Central not only as a dashboard to review status of value streams and capabilities, but as a core platform in terms of how work is captured, reviewed, worked on and delivered,” explains Mahendra. “This is a culture transformation for us. It’s about how we operate and interact with each other. To enable this shift, we modifi ed our processes and tools and put in place the management systems to enable this change.”

CA Technologies also invested in coaching, education and training to ensure that the transformation would deliver the anticipated benefi ts. This approach enables teams to adopt the right practices and use the tools effectively to generate meaningful reports and dashboards that help them self-govern, celebrate successes and transform.

Greater value through integrationWith CA Project & Portfolio Management widely used within GIS already, the team leverages the integration between CA Project & Portfolio Management and CA Agile Central to provide an end-to-end platform to connect business strategy, goals and resource allocation to the execution of the work at the team and organizational level.

“CA Project & Portfolio Management is used for planning, resource management and fi nancial tracking while CA Agile Central is the execution engine, enabling teams and managers to enter and track day-to-day activity,” explains John Depasquale, Senior Director of IT at CA Technologies, who is leading the agile transformation effort.

Adoption of the combined solution was a natural next step to scaling the agile approach. SAFe includes release management based on demand and fi nancials, and this is where CA Project & Portfolio Management complements CA Agile Central. “By integrating the two solutions, we have a complete value stream, from planning and design to execution and delivery. This equally applies to a product going to market as it does to a solution going into production,” adds Depasquale.

Standardizing on Agile methodologies with CA Agile Central and CA Project & Portfolio Management has led to a huge leap in effi ciency for GIS, as John explains. “We have seen a 20 percent increase in the number of capabilities delivered in our releases. By integrating CA Project & Portfolio Management with CA Agile Central we have also seen a 35 percent increase in the accuracy of our fi nancial forecasting for development.”

As a result of such effi ciencies, the GIS organization within CA Technologies will be able to:
