For CAE, there are three passing grades, A, B and C' Candidates who have achieved a Grade A have demonstrated abi|iý at Council ofEurope Leve| C2. Candidates who have not achieved a cAE passing grade (Counci| oÍ Europe Leve| C,l), but have demonstrated ability at thelevel below this, are awarded a certificate stating Council of Europe Level 82.

A f symbo| next to the grade indicates that the candidate was exempt Írom satisÍying the Íull range of assessment objectives in theexamination.

The Council of Europe.s Common European Framework of Reíerence covers six |eve|s oÍ |anguage proficiency. Research carried out by theAssociation oÍ Language Testers in Europe (ALTE) shows what |earners can typica|ly do at each |eve|' The tab|e below gives examples oÍtypica| abi|ity in each of the ski|| areas Íor Counci| of Europe Leve|s C2, Cl and 82.

Level C2 Listening and Speaking Reading and Writing

Overall general CAN advise on or talk about complex orability sensitive issues, understand colloquial

CAN understand various documents,inc|uding the Íiner points of comp|extexts, and CAN write letters and meeting noteswith good expression and accuracy.

Level C'l Listening and Speaking Reading and Writing

a casual conversation with a good degree offluency, coping with abstract expressions.
