How it Started

• In 2004, Thorkil Sonne, Founder of Specialisterne in Copenhagen, Denmark started a company focused on developing and employing individuals on the Autism spectrum. His motivating factor was when his son Lars, was diagnosed with Autism at age 3.

• After successfully building out a business model in Denmark, Thorkil set a goal to enable 1,000,000 jobs worldwide for folks with Autism

• He realized to do that he needed to enter the U.S. market

• Governor Markell proactively invited him to the U.S. and sold him on Delaware as the place to be based

• DE Governor Jack Markell & DE Health & Social Services Cabinet Secretary Rita Landgraf asked CAI (Ernie) and Specialisterne (Thorkil) to meet in summer of 2012. The Governor knew CAI was very focused on community service and specifically disabilities through our long partnership with Easter Seals

The CAI-Specialisterne Partnership

• CAI & Specialisterne spent several months developing a new partnership model for the U.S. market, called the “Delaware Model”

• The State of Delaware became the first U.S. client to try this model (the Governor ‘walked the talk’)

• The projects are performed in CAI’s Innovation & Technology Center (ITC) in Newark, DE. CAI welcomed Specialisterne to join them in the CAI ITC

• Five State of Delaware Divisions are now utilizing the CAI-Specialisterne model

Here’s how it works:

• Individuals on the Autism spectrum are identified by the DE Department of Labor, Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR)

• They attend “LEGO Hangout” sessions, which really allow Specialisterne to properly assess each person in a non-threatening environment

• The individuals who are capable are then signed up for a 4-week training program, where they learn an array of things, including how to work in teams, project skills, technical skills and preparing for a professional work environment

• Towards the end of the training the individuals are aligned with an upcoming project that CAI has secured with their clients

Why this is important

• It is a great thing to do. Individuals on the autism spectrum are an underserved labor market

• CAI-Specialisterne “Delaware Model” is now mature and ready for expansion

• Employing individuals on the autism spectrum makes for a better company bottom line!
