Snackbar JonesSnackbar Jones, a full time working cover band, is like a bowl ofJambalaya. They work almost every night and have a bit of everything foreverybody. Snackbar Jones caters to whatever venue they are working andto whatever the crowd wants to hear. Frank Hohl is a mastermind atdoing this. He’s been doing it since the band's inception 10 or so yearsago, but it is the effort of all 5 members of this band that makes it run likea machine. The band members are:Frank Hohl - Frontman, Leader, Main Vocals, Lead & Rhythm guitar and3 years sober, for real. He has a cat that is gay and has had sex with everydrummer he has worked with except Tony.Aaron Barlow - Bass, back up harmonies and sings 2 - 4 songs a night, one to remember is the Georgia Satellites, "Keep Your Hands toYourself." Aaron has been with Snackbar from the beginning. Aaron isonly a bass player because "he had to put NASCAR driving on the backburner because of his vertigo."Shawn Lindfors - Lead & Rhythm guitar, back up harmonies and tons ofspecial FX including keys, piano, sax, full horn section, and synth sound. So if you are listening to "Ring of Fire" and you hear a fat group of horns, that is Shawn playing horns from the guitar and special secret FX pedals. That particular song, "Ring of Fire" is a hybrid version of Cash’s style
and Social D’s arrangement. Shawn is alsoan X-Box and Star Wars nerd.Tony Jones - Drummer, plays a full tradi-tional drumset with trigger on kick drum aswell as an electronic set of pads for handclapping or special FX. Tony started play-ing drums because "he is a dumb ass as heshould have been a singer/frontman so hecould be a bigger asshole."Paul "Papa" Popadak - Production manager, sound engineer, stage manager, light pro-duction/operator, drums, cargo truck driverand chief bottle washer. This guy does it alland very well I might add.Based out of Virginia Beach, VA SnackbarJones is one of the East Coast’s premiereparty bands. The band was formed in 1997and has an extensive set list that keepsgrowing and staying fresh. Checkout their songlist at www.snackbarjones.com/songlist_new.html
Popular on college campuses, SnackbarJones plays a wide variety of styles includ-ing modern rock, alternative, new wave, punk, ska, pop, classic rock, disco and hip-hop. Snackbar was one of THE first coverbands to cover contemporary hip-hop,which has always been a really importantgenre for Frank. SBJ’s has performed fromKey West, FL (Sloppy Joe’s) to Rochester,NY and everywhere in between. They have
shared the bill with acts such as The Beach Boys, Salt-N-Pepa, EddieMoney, Kool & the Gang and The Smithereens to name a few. This bandis perfect for college functions, frat parties, weddings, corporate events, outdoor festivals and club dates.
Frank was influenced by Neil Diamond as his Mother made him watch"The Jazz Singer" twice and was always playing it at the house when hewas growing up. Only SBJ’s can make a Diamond song "Forever in BlueJeans" sound cool and fresh. Conditioned to Diamond’s songs, it’s veryeasy to figure out that they also do a Monkees tune, "I’m a Believer"which was written by Diamond. Another song that would seem impossibleto cover is Cindy Lauper’s "Girls Just Want to Have Fun." I will not tellyou the secret on how Frank can do this, but it is done amazingly well.Frank likes to cover songs by "Weezer" and they all sound great. Nobodyelse can touch "The Final Countdown", by Europe with Shawn playing astrong guitar pedal patch which contains, horns, keys, and synth. A fewmore songs to mention, Def Leppard’s "Poor Some Sugar On Me" -Frank’s vocals are spot on and sound much better than Joe Elliot’s singinglive. Prince’s "Purple Rain" is definitely one song to hear as Frank reallyis feeling this song. Vocals are magically Prince and Frank’s lead guitaris strong, note for note.
SBJ’s can pull off all of their songs mix them up, emulate DJ’s and try tomake the party happen to get the

rowd singing, dancing and cheering them on. As good as SBJ’s is, Frankis grounded and knows that one can only take themselves but so serious-ly. He always thought that "cover bands talking crap about other coverbands is like waiters from Applebee’s ragging on waiters from RubyTuesdays."
Some of the latest tunz that SBJ’s are performing or will be shortly are asfollows: Lollipop - LIL Wayne, Pork and Beans - Weezer, South ofHeaven - Slayer and maybe even the retarded "Kissed a Girl song."Frank has written about 40 originals in the last year (Monte Carlo andothers are on their myspace profile page) and they are ready to start put-ting material together to go into the studio. So be on the lookout for anall original SBJ’s CD coming out in the not so distant future.
SBJ’s plays every Monday in Newport News, every Wednesday inVirginia Beach, and every Thursday in Hampton.
Frank says "I’m only in a cover band so I can be a D-list celebrity andchallenge C-list local celebrity Bob Fresh from 96X to a charity boxingmatch. For the money….mostly for the money."www.myspace.com/thesnackbarjones

Suspensionat Fuzion Ink
We caught up with Josh and Pu at Fuzion Ink on Granby St. Norfolk. Joshand Pu handle the piercing at Fuzion. They both display body enhance-ments of their own as well as a sweet array of tattoos, which is to beexpected. Fuzion is well known for their outstanding tattoo artist whichhave waiting listas long as yourarm, but thepiercing atFuzion is beingtaken to a wholenew level. Theguys say theywill put a pierc-ing anywhere onthe body that issafe. They arevery professionaland know whatthey are doing. They use free-hand style tech-nique and theyonly use internal-ly threaded bodyjewelry. Theywork in a sterileenvironment and
use a Statin Autoclave.
The thing that is really unique is their involvement with suspension. Forthose of you that might not be familiar with suspension it is being sus-pended in the air by having hooks inserted into the back or other areas onthe body. The hooks areattached to ropes and theperson is slowly lifted offthe ground and suspend-ed. The person may thenhang in that suspendedposition for as long asthey wish. The length oftime seems to vary fromperson to person. Thereare many different posi-tions the body may besuspended in. Each posi-tion has a different namelike Coma, Suicide,Resurrection, Crucifix,Superman and others. PuNastee and Josh Burghare joined by AndrewBancroft and RyanProvido of OceanMystique. Together theyform the team that doesthe suspensions.
We were lucky enough to catch up with Erik and Lucy Day who were cel-ebrating their 1styear anniversary. They chose to besuspended forthat event andwe were there.
The experiencewas unique. Ithink the invitedguest were aseffected by theevent as wereEric and Lucy.
We were wor-ried about theflash on ourcameras being aproblem for thecouple but asevents movedforward camerascame out fromeverywhere.

Dog of the MonthDiesel
Owner Kelly at Off Shore, VB
The Sandbar 3323 Shore Drive, Virginia Beach
Tha Splash Pick of the month FUN PLACE TO EAT.
The Sandbar at Bubba’s Marina sits on theLynnhaven River right at the foot of the LesnerBridge and is an excellent choice if you desire acasual atmosphere which allows you to take advan-tage of one of the best views that Virginia Beach hasto offer.
The Sandbar is an open-air eatery and openedits doors, so to speak at the beginning of the 2008summer season and as each week passes it is gainingin popularity. It’s owners, Dimitri and Josee Hionisare extremely active in the operation of the Sandbarand can usually be seen on the deck. Managementresponsibilities are ably handled by Will Miller, whospent most of his career managing the Duck-Inrestaurant as well as the Friday night beach parties. Will is excited about the buzz that the Sandbar iscausing and for many natives it will be reminiscentof the atmosphere at the Gazebo.
I initially chose the Sandbar because a friendof mine who is a musician was booked to play thereon a Wednesday night when they first opened. Iwanted to come out to show my support and fromthat day on I became an instant fan of the Sandbar. Iwas hooked immediately by the breathtaking view ofthe Lynnhaven River. After a long day of sitting inan office with a view of a busy street in downtownNorfolk, this was exactly what I needed. Add to thatgood music, food and drinks and the Sandbar rapidlybecame an item on my list of things to do.
The Sandbar is adjacentto the Shellfish Company onShore Drive at Bubba’s Marinaand you can enter by walkingthrough the store or directlyfrom either side of the largedeck. Or you can pull up tothe dock if you happen to betraveling by boat, as manypatrons do. In addition toserving wine and various cock-tails a light menu of steamedshrimp, crab legs, oysters andclams are available. If you arenot in the mood for seafoodyou can also order Buffalowings or nachos. I ordered ahalf pound of medium steamedshrimp (small and large are
also available) and the nachos, which can be pre-pared with either chicken or beef. The portions weresurprisingly large and were plenty for two people. The shrimp were steamed at the Shellfish Companyand came out perfectly with just enough seafood sea-soning. The nachos were piled high with toppingsand the grilled chicken was an appropriate alternativeto the normal beef that you would get with nachos. If you prefer a full meal, patrons also have the optionof ordering from Bubba’s menu which features freshlocal seafood daily pre-pared to your liking.
The Sandbar canaccommodate parties ofany size on the spaciousand comfortable deckand according to man-agement they are gearingup to regularly providelive entertainment. Theservers on staff at theSandbar are friendly andattentive and the pricesare reasonable.
The Sandbar is aperfect combination ofatmosphere, food anddrinks. Whether you aretraveling by land or bysea, it’s a great place tounwind or entertain fami-ly and friends.

Local LoveGreetings Splashers, It’s me Big B, back again with another installmentof local love.
Now, last month we asked you guys to tell us about some of the HotSpots in the 7 C’s. Well, I was happily surprised to learn that there is stillliteracy left in VA, and tons of you have emailed me some memorablemoments had at some of Virginia’s great places for good times.
First off, we will start out in my home city Norfolk, VA. Now anybodywho has ever partied in the "Folk," as we locals like to call it, knows ofthe high class, dress-coded clubs of downtown Granby St., or, the brightneon lights that line the row of bars on Colley Ave. Please don’t get mewrong, being a Norfolker like myself, I have had plenty of run-ins withbabes and bouncers on both of these streets, but what they both lack islive music.
To fix this problem we need to make a U-turn on Colley Ave. and headdown to the other end, at a place called Tanners Creek.
Now, if you’ve never been to Tanners, let me prepare you…
The food is great, and if you’re a seafood lover, then it’s pink crustaceansand good vibrations for you. Not only is the food at Tanners BANGIN,but you’re also sure to enjoy it in front of a live band.
That’s right!
The kind people at Tanner’s Creek feature a mother load of live music.Coming from Ugly Friend of New York all the way to the Dunes ofNorfolk, the Creek features all styles of bands and music, in fact myband the FSC has even graced its stage.
Now, if you go back down Colley and turn onto 26th Street, which willturn into Lafayette Blvd., which is conveniently located a block from myhouse, and also houses another spot for live music, The Lafayette Grill. The Lafayette has just recently started their live music venture, whichmeans there is gonna be bands out the A-hole trying to get in there. I
unfortunately haven’t had the time to attend a show at the Lafayette (Ihope to change this in the next week or so), but have read plenty about itthrough all of these emails you guys have sent me.
One reader writes, "I went to the Lafayette one afternoon with a fewfriends, not expecting much out of the evening. After we arrived, and had afew drinks. The staff was nice and the regulars were fun to hang out with. But, as soon as Forefront hit the stage, I saw just how live the place couldget. I had such a good time at the Lafayette Grill, the next morning I wokeup at a bus stop in Mexico with a surf board that had a shark bite in it anda snake charmer named Darla."
So there you have it Bros, if that doesn’t sound like a clutch time, I don’tknow what does.
Wow! I had no idea that it was gonna take this long just to do Norfolk, myhands are tired, and my buzz is starting to die.
So, next month I say we pick this back up with the Beach (lets ride thiswave as long as we can baby.)
This also means you have more time to write in [email protected] and give me more to talk about.
Remember, we still have 6 of the 7 C’s to go so don’t let me downVirginia.
I’ll see you in September, Peace!
