Electricidad estática
Es una corriente eléctrica que permanece quieta y se produce al frotar o rozar ciertos objetos que se cargan de energía. Por ejemplo cuando se frota un peine de plástico con lana, o una vara de vidrio con seda, ambos secargan con electricidad estática. Para "ver" la electricidad estática, se frota unpeine de plástico con una lana y luego se pasa cerca del cabello, este es atraídopor la carga eléctrica que tiene el peine y se levanta. En este caso, el cabello funciona como un electroscopio.
El electroscopio, es un instrumento que permite advertir la presencia de laelectricidad en un cuerpo. Está formado por dos laminitas de estaño suspendidasde una barrita metálica que termina en una bola, este conjunto está encerrado en un recipiente de vidrio. Alacercar al objeto cargado de electricidad la barra, las laminitas se separan porque agarran la carga eléctrica quetiene el objeto.
Electricidad estática en la naturaleza
En la naturaleza, los materiales pueden tener más o menos carga eléctrica, cuando éstas pasan de un cuerpo a otro, se pueden observar fenómenos eléctricos naturales. Este es el caso de los rayos en una tormenta.Los rayos se originan al chocar nubes, cargadas de electricidad estática. Cuando contienen
poca electricidad se originan los relámpagos, que es un resplandor instantáneo.Si la carga es muy fuerte se producen los rayos, que son fuertes
descargas eléctricas y luego suena el trueno. En una tormenta se suele verla luz primero y luego se escucha el trueno, esto se debe a que la luz es másveloz que el sonido.Como los rayos son cargas eléctricas, son peligrosos. Un rayo puedepartir un árbol por la mitad, tumbar una casa, siempre suelen ser atraído porobjetos altos y puntiagudos, debido a esto se inventó el llamado pararrayos. Este es un dispositivo formado por barras metálicas terminadas en punta,unidas entre si, y conectadas a la tierra, para llevar la corriente hasta el suelo.Se coloca sobre el techo de edificios o casas, para protegerlos
La electricidad dinámica
Las cargas eléctricas transmitidas por conductores en forma de corrienteeléctrica es la electricidad dinámica. La electricidad dinámica puede ser producida por una energía logra almacenar. Las pilas un buen ejemplo de este almacenamiento de energía eléctrica. Eso es lo que se hacecon las pilas y la batería. Las pilas que se usan en los radios y linternas, por ejemplo, y también las baterías de vehículos, son almacenamientos de electricidad dinámica.
Pilas y baterías
Las pilas y baterías están compuestas por dos materiales diferentes: cobre y zinc o carbón y zinc. Estos metales
se encuentran dentro de una solución de agua con un ácido o con sal, llamada electrolito,sólido. Al unir los dos extremos, uno positivo y el otro negativo, llamados polos en la pila o bornes en las baterías,con un cable conductor, se genera una corriente eléctrica por el proceso electroquímico. La energía eléctrica quese genera dentro de la pila enciende o pone a funcionar un aparato eléctrico conectado a ella.La electricidad puede ser medida en amperios, culombio, kilovoltios o voltios. La potencia de las pilas se mide en voltios. En el comercio hay pilas de diferentes tamaños, pero casi todas tienen 1.5 voltios, las cuadradas tienen mayor potencia. Las pilas son muy útiles porque se usan en aparatos eléctricos portátiles y son livianas, algunas especiales son recargables. Las baterías poseen mayor voltaje ya que deben alimentar equipos de mayor exigencia, tienen 6 ó 12 voltios. Las baterías usadas en los vehículos son recargables.
Las pilas y baterías generan son contaminantes, porque el electrolito utilizado es muy corrosivo y despidegases venenosos que contaminan el ambiente. Para evitar la contaminación, los científicos han creado laspilas recargables, pero no son muy utilizadas porque son más costosas. No obstante es importante crearconciencia ambiental y utilizar materiales y artefactos que no provoquen daños ambientales porque a medidaque se contamina más el ambiente, la vida en el planeta se hace más difícil y menos duradera.
