Principal’s Message

“It is the questions you ask, not the answer you write down” Professor Pascale Quester, Vice-Chancellor, University of Adelaide. As we move into a future with unknown jobs, the question of what schools and educational institutions “teach” young people is an important one. While we often fear the future, it is worth considering that there have been more jobs created than lost globally. As we head into automation we need to ask “what are humans better at?” Ross Dawson, Futurist.

I had the pleasure of attending the Principal’s summit hosted by the University of Adelaide and a panel of researchers. While there were plenty of examples of where machines and artificial intelligence will enter our work there was also the celebration of the human qualities that are already present in our work. Capabilities such as expertise, creativity, adaptability and empathy will help us design work, which is supported by machines. Interestingly one of the capabilities discussed was the “ability to work with machines”. The notion of our next generation of farmers moving to Mars to support a Mars station was also something I had not thought about.

The capabilities the panel were talking about are the same as the Australian Curriculum Capabilities. Every curriculum around the world is now focused on the capabilities equally with content specific curriculum.

During our professional learning this term, staff have been focused on developing Critical & Creative Thinking and Personal & Social Capability. Some of this work will be show cased at the Middle School Learning Expo and our students are looking forward to sharing this work with families. Much of the “hard thinking” has happened in the process of developing the questions and strategies to address the problem or issue. The focus is very much on the process as well as the product. When you come, please ask the students questions so they can describe the learning they have been undertaking. It has been another busy term and we wish all our students and families a relaxing break - but not for our year 12’s – it is the final push to the finish line, please ensure you are completing tasks, getting feedback and preparing for the exam period.

Working Bee

Thanks to the families, students and staff who came and “mulched” the front corner of the school yard. This was a massive job and was able to be completed in a few hours with the help of many. We would also like to thank Leisure Options who did the planting for us under the guidance of our resident garden expert, Wendy Rushbrook.

Year 7 Transition Programme

This year’s Year 7 Transition Program is now well under way. Students from Warooka and St Columbus have already attended two events at the school. This week some students will also attend the School Social and all of the Year 7s will be part of the Southern Yorke Peninsula Interaction Day in Adelaide on Thursday 21 September.

Science Week Transition

On Wednesday 16th August the Year 6/7s from Warooka and Saint Columba’s came to our school for Science Week. When they got to YAS we had a talk with Ms Haselgrove then we were put into groups with a variety of different people. All the groups did different activities during the day. My group made cars and fruit bags and we learnt about plants and indigenous history with Mrs Rushbrook.

Course Counselling

Students in Years 9, 10 and 11 will be starting to think about courses for next year. The “guide” is being updated and will be available during Week 10. As there are changes, we would encourage all students to book a time with a Senior School Leader and a family member to discuss subject choices. We would also like students to talk to Senior School Teachers about subjects so they understand what each subject involves.

Appointments will be available early in Term 4 to choose courses.

From the Junior School

Wow, it is hard to believe that Term 3 is almost over! The students have been very busy this term and it has been great to see lots of interesting things happening in each of the classes. Thank you to those parents who have had interviews or have made appointments with staff. Interviews are a great opportunity to discuss student learning and any concerns that you have with teachers. If you have not yet booked an interview please contact your child’s teacher to arrange a time. When Mr Hayman returns to work he will be in contact with families to reschedule those interviews that were cancelled due to his absence. On Thursday morning of this week students will be participating in a Milo Cricket session and then on Tuesday of Week 10 (September 26th) parents are invited to attend a Junior School Assembly in the drama room at 2:10pm. We hope to see many of you there to celebrate this term’s learning!

From the Library

There has been some confusion regarding the borrowing of PG movies to the Junior & Middle school of late. The following is a reminder of the procedure needed to be followed in the library. Currently Junior School students have been told that they can borrow PG movies if they have a note from a parent with the title of the movie and a signature. However this is incorrect procedure according to Community Libraries policy. Junior School students will need a parent present to borrow PG and above movies (grades R-5) Borrowing limits are 2 DVDs per student

Phone: 8852 1233 Fax: 8852 1024 Email: [email protected]

Middle School students can borrow PG if they have a note signed by the parent with the title of the movie they want to borrow, this is only for students in grades 6-9 Borrowing limits are 4 DVDs per student We understand that parents currently sign a consent so that students are able to watch PG movies at school, however because we are a School Community Library our community collection has different policies that need to be followed. Sorry for an inconvenience and if there are any issues please contact us at the library.

Royal Adelaide Show

The Royal Adelaide Show was a soggy affair this year with puddles aplenty and lawns being more like mud pits. However this did not deter our Year 11 and 12 Integrated Learning students, getting on with the job of showing six goats and three steers.

Students from Year 8 and 9, under the guidance of volunteer Malcolm Watters, also took an array of chickens to the show. Over the last three terms students fed, cleaned and trained their animals to be calm around the general public and be relaxed within their show quarters. All students at times felt uncomfortable with the tasks that faced them but through practise and support from their peers they overcame these to represent the school and their animals in the highest way.

“We needed to use good communication for safety reasons especially when moving our steers” said Jess Kammermann.

“We all learnt to depend on one another so we could succeed as a team” Sharna Claydon commented.

The Led Steer Crew of Chloe Barlow, Sharna Claydon, Jessie East, Bailey Gutsche, Jayden Hancock, Jess Kammermann, Jason McDonald, Steven Page, Ebbony Peter, Caleb Rivers, Tom Robinson, Brody Steed, Hugo Taheny and Daniel Tilbrook all did a fantastic job. Team Carlos were fortunate enough to be awarded a third in their steer weight category, team Donny triumphed against the infamous strip of synthetic grass, with team Damian (Tails) educating the crowd that steers sometimes have no tail.

The Year 12 Led Goat students, Cassie Golding, Imogen Grenfell, Brittany Hancock, Tarnee Morey-Stevens and Taylor Wallace were up against stiff competition. The unexpected distance of walking the Grand Parade posed an issue with even the best goat walker wanting a nap part way through. Goats!.

With Tammy Gutsche assisting these students this year, many new tricks were learnt during grooming activities. Thank you Tammy for your insight and knowledge.

All in all, the preparation of animals this year was successful. I would like to formally thank all those who assisted in this process. Without community members donating animals, feed, time, cars, trailers, expertise and equipment, the above activities would not be possible.

Year 8 student, Claire Harvey, also assisted this crew as she was an experienced chicken fancier. Thank you Malcolm Watters for your time, effort, expertise and mentoring of these students.

Congratulations to the poultry team; James, Kaelah, Gemma, Erin, Jess and Claire on a very successful Royal Adelaide Show. The students travelled to Adelaide the day before the show commenced and the poultry exhibits for the show pens. The following day the poultry was judged. The team prepared 18 exhibits and received 12 first cards and 5 second cards. They also won the award for Champion School Exhibit of the show. The exhibit was an Old English Game Bantam Duckwing Pullet. Well done team! Malcolm Watters

Term 3 Reporting and Interviews

Junior School is currently running interviews – please ensure you have made a booking with your child’s teacher. Andrew Hayman is unwell and some interviews may need to be rescheduled. We are expecting him back next week. Middle and Senior School are currently preparing mid semester reports which will be available at interview or on Thursday 28th September. Last year we had one evening for interviews which limited opportunities. The Middle and Senior staff are offering appointments across Term 3 Week 10 OR Term 4 Week 1 to allow as many families as possible to come in and discuss student progress. We would like all families to come in and discuss successes and areas for improvement.

Interviews: Monday 25 September – Thursday 28 September Monday 16 October – Thursday 19 October

Middle School Learning Expo Thursday 28 September 1:30pm – 5:30pm

The Middle School students have been working on more complex tasks to develop Critical & Creative Thinking (one of the Australian Curriculum General Capabilities). Staff and students are working hard to prepare an expo to show what they have been doing. You can come in, see the great work, ask questions, sample student cooking, organise an interview, pick up the report - we would love to see as many families as possible for the expo.
