A common practice in our day is for Chris-tians to speak of the “culture wars.” By thisthey usually mean the political and cul-tural skirmishes between leftist secularthinking and the more moderate and tra-ditional thinking of believers. But the prob-lem is that the phrase “culture wars” is aparticularly inept way to refer to this prob-lem. “Culture wars” would indicate a colli-sion between two distinct cultures, but thisis not what we have. Rather, we see intra-mural debates within one culture, and thatculture is the form of modernity. One sideof the debate is clear-sighted and wantsthe unbelieving assumptions permeatingthat culture to come to a full and com-plete fruition. The other side of the de-bate is confused, and wants to pretend thatthe culture surrounding them is some-thing other than what it is.

Our phrases right-wing and left-wingcame from the seating in the revolution-ary legislature of the French Revolution. The moderate revolutionaries sat on theright, while the radicals sat on the left. They had their debates, of course, but theywere all revolutionaries. What they heldin common was more fundamental thanwhat divided them. Separated by a ravine,at the bottom of the ravine they were stilljoined together. While Scripture speaks ofa bottomless pit, a place of unending andhorrible judgment, there is another bot-tomless chasm as well, a chasm which we

must come to understand fully. This bot-tomless ravine is the divide between faithand unbelief—and nothing joins them atthe bottom.

We are not currently in a culture war,but we do need to get into a culture war.But there are prerequisites. Before you canhave a war, you need weapons. And beforeyou can have a culture war, you need tohave a culture. And this is the central prob-lem that confronts Christians today asthey look around at the cultural manifes-tations of unbelief. What we see is the out-working of the “faith” established in theEnlightenment of the mid-eighteenthcentury,

Many Christians live within thisbroad Enlightenment culture, but theybelong to churches that have made theirpeace with this modernity. Our religion issafe, tucked and hidden away from allalarms. Behind our eyes and between ourears we have that gnostic spark that we calla personal relationship with Jesus. Non-believers have their equivalent spark, butall of them accept the external dictates ofscience and the state. We have accepted asa matter of faith that our internal spiritualreality does not and cannot have any par-ticular cultural embodiment that mightthreaten the status quo.

The ancient Christians in Rome hadthis option open to them, an option thatthey refused to take. Rome allowed for the

Manifesto on Psalms and Hymns

formation of a cultus privatus, religion thataccepted its duty to not challenge the au-thority of the emperor. Because Christianswould not accept this—Jesus Christ wasLord of all, and that included Caesar—they were viciously persecuted. Because wehave accepted the modern equivalent, weare left alone like Lot in Sodom, free towring our hands in dismay over the waythings are going.

We call our spiritual weekend con-ferences retreats, which kind of figures. Weevangelicals affirm our faith in an inerrantBible—inerrant in the autographs, whichof course no one possesses. We sing feel-good ditties in the public worship of God,but they are songs which have been aptlycharacterized as “Jesus is my boyfriend”songs. And you ask me how I know Helives; He lives within my heart. In all ofthis, we have not grown a Christian cul-ture. Despite the fact that millions ofChristians have lived on this continent forhundreds of years, we have not built a dis-tinctively Trinitarian and Incarnationalculture. We are too busy going along withthe latest currents in the river of unbelief.

But the Incarnation is the central re-ality of human history. Enlightenmentphilosophy would have preferred ultimatereality to be a disembodied abstract truthsomewhere else, but the Scripture tells usthat the Word was with God, the Wordwas God, and the Word took on flesh anddwelt among us. We are Christians, andour faith in Jesus Christ demands embodi-ment in every aspect of life, and settlingfor anything less than this is at root a de-nial of the lordship of Jesus Christ.

What does this have to do with thesinging of psalms? Why are these thingsbeing written in a preface to a psalter/hymnal?

The need of the hour is reformationin the Church. As reformation comes tothe Church and sweeps through it, the firstthing we will notice is that reformation isnothing like revival. Revivals, at least as wehave come to define them, are readily con-tained within the walls of our churches.Periodic religious excitements are part ofour North American religious tradition, and we know the tradition. We go slack,we get stirred up, we go slack again. ButTrinitarian, incarnational reformation re-quires embodiment in every aspect of life;it requires that the teaching of the Wordof God take shape in our lives, in our cul-ture. I never tire of saying that theologycomes out our fingertips—and what ac-tually comes out our fingertips is our truetheology.

We will discover in such reformationthat the doctrine of Christ encompassesall that is true, all that is good, and all thatis lovely. It takes on the form of a cultureand affects how we prepare our meals andhow we serve them. It affects how we plantour gardens, and how we cultivate the de-lights of the marriage bed. It affects themaking of beer and the mowing of lawns. But at the center of all this is how refor-mation affects the public worship of God,and this is obviously related to the musicwe sing. Liturgical culture drives all otherexpressions of culture. The culture we ex-hibit in the presence of our gods is the de-fining element of every culture. If we

would repent of our cultural polytheism,we must turn back to the worship of theliving God, resolved to worship Him withreverence and godly fear, for He is a con-suming fire. Because He is a consumingfire, we do not approach the unapproach-able light humming a few snatches ofShine, Jesus Shine. Moses did not walk to-ward the burning bush with a praise CDin his Walkman.

We reveal musically whether or notwe are Christians who acknowledge thatthe praise of the Church should reflect andhonor the glory of God in the face ofChrist. Our praise of God should glorifythe Lord both in the music and the lyrics, and one test of whether this is happeningor not is whether our music and lyrics re-sult in a true cultural antithesis.

We believe that God is bringing manyin His Church to the point of a holy dis-content with all the liturgical happy-clappy that surrounds us. As aconsequence, we have decided to publishthis psalter/hymnal. We do not do thisbecause we believe ourselves to have ourreformational act together. Rather, we havebeen brought to a deep conviction of ourown abiding ignorance in these things. Weare merely confessing that ignorance, andinviting others to join us as we seek to re-cover a small portion of our heritage.

Just a few practical considerations re-main. Because we are recovering a numberof older forms of musical and lyrical ex-pression, some of the psalms and hymnscontained do represent a challenge. Learn-ing them will not necessarily be easy—but one of the things we are abandoning is

a convenience store approach to musicalworship. There are many songs here thatare an acquired taste. We can have confi-dence as we seek to acquire this taste be-cause we know that in the history of theChurch, generations of average Christiansused to rejoice in and with these songs. We also have the testimony of modernChristians, like our congregation, whohave set themselves to learn this music andhave come to experience how wonderfulit is. Psalm 95 used to sound just as strangeto us as it does now to you, and more thana few of us thought the “funky beat” ver-sion of “A Mighty Fortress” was more thana little much. But this was the originalform of the hymn, and it illustrates whyQueen Elizabeth I did not call many ofthese songs “Geneva jigs” for nothing.Learning these songs is like trying to drinka hearty oatmeal stout after years of litebeer. There will be a period of contortedgrimaces, but, when all is said and done, there is no looking back. This psalter/hymnal contains the glories of aestheticdepth.

Some may wonder whether this em-phasis on the psalms may be giving toomuch credence to what is called the ex-clusive psalmnody position. It is not ourpurpose here to enter into that controversy, but we do want to say that fear of over-reaction is not a theology of worship. Webelieve our exclusivist brethren are in er-ror when they demand that we sing noth-ing more than the psalms. But we want togive credit where credit is due and say thatthey are quite right in their insistence thatwe sing nothing less. Any form of hymn

or chorus singing that prevents theChurch from learning all 150 psalms isprofoundly wrong-headed, and so we havededicated ourselves to a full recovery of thepsalms. We have lost an enormous trea-sury and fallen a great way—as illustratedby our need to speak of “introducing” thepsalms to Christian churches! Whateverour differences, no one maintains as apoint of doctrine that we are prohibitedfrom singing psalms. The apostle Paul, on

the contrary, calls us to it (Eph. 5:19).And last, we must recall that

Jehoshaphat sent the choir out aheadof the army, and God gave a gloriousvictory. We need to do the same thing, trusting for the same result. But beforewe head out there, in the vanguardheading into this cultural fray, we musthave something to sing.

Introduction to Musical Style

Is it any surprise that the final words ofthe last Psalm exhort us, “Let everythingthat hath breath praise the LORD. Hallelu-jah!” (Ps. 150:6)? The injunction is givento us as if we might forget that this is ourhighest calling and that it rides on ourbreath—something that is drawn into ourbodies so that it can be exhaled with theglory of sound. The Psalms are full of otherinstructions as to how we should praisethe Lord. “O come, let us sing unto theLORD, let us heartily rejoice in the strengthof our salvation” (Ps. 95:1). Our singingshould be done with joy and great vigor.“O sing unto the LORD a new song” (Ps.96:1). A “new song” does not necessarilymean one that has just been composed, butdescribes the way the singer approacheshis singing of the Psalm. The Psalmshould be fresh and full of life. “Rejoice inthe LORD, O ye righteous: for praise iscomely for the upright. Praise the LORD

with harp: sing unto Him with the psal-tery and an instrument of ten strings. Singunto Him a new song; play skillfully witha loud noise” (Ps. 33:1–3). Not only areinstruments employed, but they are to beplayed skillfully. Competent musician-ship is expected by the psalmist. This isno less than praise to the Most High God.The Hebrew word used for “a loud noise”is perhaps best understood as a shout ofjoy, referring to the singers, not the instru-mentalists. Singing is a sport. It requires

the same kind of energy. When a singersings properly with full breath supportfrom the diaphragm, he will feel the ex-haustion that comes from great physicalexertion. This is one of the most difficultconcepts to teach to singers because ourculture has relegated singing to the realmof the weak rather than to the realm ofspiritual warfare. Robust singing is a must, and that goes for the men as much as thewomen. “I will praise the name of Godwith a song, and I will magnify Him withthanksgiving. This also shall please theLORD better than an ox or bullock that hathhorns and hoofs” (Ps. 69:30, 31). Above allelse, we must sing with a right heart, thanksgiving, and understanding. It is easyto sing away, enjoying only the notes andforgetting about what we are singing andto whom we are singing.

The Revelation of St. John providesus with even more insight into the sing-ing of praise to God. As John is taken upinto the heavenly realms (Rev. 4:1, 2), hesees the throne of God with all its atten-dant pictures of creatures singing Hispraise. There are the four beasts who nevercease to sing, “Holy, holy, holy, Lord GodAlmighty, which was, and is, and is tocome” (Rev. 4:8); the twenty-four elderssinging, “Thou art worthy, O Lord, to re-ceive glory and honor and power: for thouhast created all things, and for thy plea-sure they are and were created” (Rev. 4:11);

Page 9: Cantus Christi · 2008-07-16 · v A common practice in our day is for Chris-tians to speak of the “culture wars.” By this they usually mean the political and cul-tural skirmishes

the beasts and elders singing a new song:“Thou art worthy to take the book, and toopen the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy bloodout of every kindred, and tongue, andpeople, and nation; And hast made usunto our God kings and priests: and weshall reign on the earth” (Rev. 5:9, 10). Thenmyriads of angels join in the throng sing-ing, “Worthy is the Lamb that was slain toreceive power, and riches, and wisdom, andstrength, and honor, and glory, and bless-ing” (Rev. 5:12); and finally “every crea-ture which is in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in thesea, and all that are in them, heard I say-ing, Blessing, and honor, and glory, andpower, be unto him that sitteth upon thethrone, and unto the Lamb for ever andever” (Rev. 5:13, 14).

What John had experienced in Jerusa-lem at the Temple he was now experienc-ing in the fullness of the heavenly places. We experience the reality of this as we par-ticipate in each Lord’s Day service and ap-proach the throne of God in worship. Godhas made us a temple of living stones, andHe dwells among us. He is our God andwe are His people. Like John, we too, as-cend into the heavenly places in our con-gregational worship. We too join in thecelebration around the throne with all theheavenly host. The only difference is thatthere have been another 2,000 years ofhymn writing and music making. Thesaints of the last two millennia have addedtheir voices to the heavenly chorus withall the new songs that they have written. Those songs are our heritage and are to be

sung in the Lord’s praise by us with ourfellow departed saints. We are given theopportunity to add our hymns of praiseto those that have been written before. Theglory increases if we climb on the shoul-ders of those who have gone before us. Butif, in our arrogance, we think we can ig-nore what has been taught us, we err andbring lame sacrifices of praise. We must betaught in the sanctuary in order to bringwhat is beautiful into the sanctuary. If webring only that which the world teachesus, we bring that which is an abominationin God’s ears.

WHY ANOTHER HYMNAL?Christians are people of the Book. Ourworship derives its form and content fromthe Bible. Our instruction for faith andlife is entirely drawn from the Wordrevealed to us through inspiration ofthe Holy Spirit. It should be no surprisethat Christians for centuries relied onbooks to sing their praise in worship. Thedevelopment of musical notation evol-ved in the surroundings of Christianworship as the need for transmitting andperforming music grew. The earliestnotation comes from the service books ofthe church in the ninth and tenth centu-ries. The Reformers relied on hymnals inbook form to disseminate the singing ofpsalms and hymns. Psalters and hymnalshave been the second most importantbooks of worship, just as singing is thesecond most important skill that Chris-tians learn. The Bible makes this clearthroughout the Psalms, calling us to singpraises to the Lord with skillfulness.

x

But the church has experienced amove away from the use of books to singfrom. Modern technologies such as theoverhead projector have rapidly replacedthe use of hymnals in many churches.Cantus Christi is designed to retain tradi-tional psalm and hymn singing throughthe use of the printed page. The settingsare mostly in the typical cantional style, that is, four voice parts moving togetherin block chords (homophony) with themelody in the soprano voice. However, there are many departures from this stylein various settings, so that sometimes thetenor voice has the melody, sometimes allthe voices are singing in unison, and some-times the block chords give way to simplecontrapuntal melodies. But the beauty ofthe cantional style prevails and with it theinterdependence of voices. Singing ahymn in harmony is fully Trinitarian. Thevarious parts work together to make a uni-fied whole–a beautiful picture of the oneand the many. If you take away any onepart, the hymn is lacking in completeness. Each voice part is written for those mem-bers of the congregation that have thatparticular vocal range; thus the music takesinto account the diversity of the congre-gation.

Cantus Christi is a psalter-hymnal forthe congregation of Christ Church, Mos-cow, Idaho. It does not pretend to satisfythe needs of any other particular congre-gation or any particular denomination. We are members of the Confederationof Reformed Evangelicals, a smalldenomination without a hymnal. Many

denominations have published their ownhymnals; Cantus Christi, however, is notintended to be a denominational hymnal. As Christ Church moved out of modernevangelicalism into a more historicallyrooted Reformational faith, the need forPsalm singing became a high priority. Asthe church sang Psalms, it became appar-ent that there was also a need to changehymn styles to those that approached thecharacter and the depth of the psalter.Choosing a modern hymnal for our needswas next to impossible. Most hymnalswith good musical content were filled withinclusive language, a sort of bowdleriza-tion of old poetry to suit current sensibili-ties, and tended toward liberalism. On theother hand, most evangelical hymnalshave catered to the call for eclecticism forthe sake of eclecticism alongside an over-abundance of the subjectivist hymns of thelate nineteenth or early twentieth centu-ries. Most show a simple lack of under-standing of beauty. Modern psalters oftenfare little better musically. The historicpsalters, such as the Genevan Psalter orthe Scottish Psalter, are wonderful, but agood mix of them cannot be found underone cover. Thus Cantus Christi. It is a workin progress. The first edition is fairly small, only around 275 hymns and Psalms, butthis is only the first edition of several moreto come, perhaps even someday becomingseparate hymnals and psalters. Sincenearly half of the music is not known bythe congregation at this time, there isplenty of room to grow with it before thenext edition comes out. Though this is a

hymnal for Christ Church, Moscow it isassembled in such a way that it can beuseful for any Christian church.

THE CONTENT

PSALMSThe psalter in this first edition is not com-plete. A little less than half of the Psalmsare represented; however, this should beremedied by the next edition. The psalmscan be divided into three main categoriesaccording to musical style–metrical, chant, and through-composed.

The metrical style is the most acces-sible for beginners because it is hymn-like.In fact, metrical Psalms really are hymnsthat paraphrase a Psalm text more or lessclosely. The Genevan Psalms make up thelargest portion of this type. They were aproduct of John Calvin’s attempts at re-covering the singing of God’s word andrepresent one of the musical high pointsin the history of psalmody. These melo-dies were originally sung in unison, but Ihave chosen the simple four-part settingsof the Huguenot composer, ClaudeGoudimel, who harmonized the GenevanPsalter within two years of its completion.A source of metrical Psalms from the nextcentury is Heinrich Schütz’s BeckerPsalter (1628, 1661). This is a source thatis relatively untapped in American con-gregational singing but is a wellspring ofdelightful tunes that expresses the char-acter of each Psalm in a fresh manner. I amgrateful to Douglas Wilson for providingEnglish texts for ten of these Psalms andhope to include many more in the next

edition. A third major group of metricalPsalms is the Scottish Psalter. Some of thelanguage is a bit more difficult to fightthrough; however, because of their Scot-tish and English roots, many of the tunesare easy to learn by American congrega-tions who have sung much Englishhymnody. A final category is a group ofmetrical Psalms united only by their in-clusion in The Book of Psalms for Sing-ing, which the Christ Church congrega-tion had been using before it was decidedto put together our own psalter.

As the congregation matures in itsPsalm singing, they should be willing totry a second style of Psalm singing–chanted Psalms. The advantage of thechanted Psalm is that the congregationcan sing the actual words of the Psalmrather than a poetical paraphrase, whichis compromised by restraints of rhyme andmeter. There are two styles of chant repre-sented in this hymnal, Gregorian andAnglican. Of the two, Anglican stylechanting is more accessible to our modernears and sensibilities. The Anglican styleof chant began to be written soon after theChurch of England was established in thesixteenth century and continues to be writ-ten today. The Gregorian Psalm tones bycontrast have less musical interest, but be-cause their origins may go back to chantsof the Jewish synagogue even before thetime of Christ, they provide a musicalbridge with the saints of ancient times.

The third style of Psalm singing isthrough-composed. A through-composedPsalm is one in which the composer writesthe music according to the demands of the

text. It has the advantage of being musi-cally interesting as well as textually accu-rate, setting out the actual Psalm textrather than a metrical version. Because themusic is flexible, texts such as “The hea-then raged tumultuously,” and “Be still, and know that I am God;” are not sung tothe same music, as in the Scottish Psalm46. The through-composed Psalm is thebest for learning the Psalm text becausethe music aids in memorizing the words. The paradigm for this style is ThomasTallis’s Psalm 95. It was composed to besung by a choir, but because of its hymn-like texture, it is accessible to congrega-tions with an adventurous spirit. To besure, it takes more time to learn, but theeffort is well worth it. Most of the ChristChurch congregation were able to sing itfrom memory in less than two years afterit was introduced. Tallis designed thispiece so that the parallel structure of theHebrew poetry of the Psalm is reflected inparallel lines of music. The congregationis divided into two groups who alternatesinging the parallel phrases. This style ofsinging (antiphonal) follows most closelythe original intention of Psalm singing asit was performed in the Temple. I amgrateful to two young American compos-ers who have set three other Psalms in thisstyle (Psalms 97, 127, and 133). Someday,I hope that Cantus Christi will contain all150 Psalms in a through-composedversion.

SERVICE MUSICA somewhat unusual section of the hym-nal, at least for modern evangelicals, is the

Service Music. This section is a collectionof song whose texts come from the ancientchurch as well as the canticles (song-likepassages) of the New Testament. In oursupposedly superior wisdom, manymoderns have thrown out these most mar-velous songs, often just because they aresung in churches which have given up thelove of the true gospel. However, theseancient songs truly take us back to earlyChristian worship, both textually andsometimes musically, to give us a taste ofwhat saints of all ages have brought beforethe throne of the living God. Savor themand bring great glory to our God and Sav-ior Jesus Christ.

HYMNSThe largest section of the hymnal is com-prised of the hymns themselves. Musically, the hymns break down into the followingchronology:

14 pre-16th century hymns,31 hymns from the 16th century,21 hymns from the 17th century,28 hymns from the 18th century,36 hymns from the 19th century, and 8 hymns from the 20th century.

The tunes are taken primarily from Ger-man and English sources, followed innumber by American and French. Germansources are preponderant because the cho-rales of the German Reformation are un-surpassed in warmth, strength, beauty, andmajesty. The Germans also had a wealthof beautiful pre-Reformation melodies todraw upon. The French sources include

xiii

some hymns derived from Genevanpsalms, several seventeenth centuryCatholic tunes, and a carol. The Britishsources include folk melodies fromEngland, Ireland, and Wales, and hymnand psalm tunes from the sixteenth to thetwentieth century. The beauty of Tallis’psalm tunes, the beloved English carols, the dignity of the Victorian hymns, andthe glorious sweep of Ralph VaughanWilliams’ hymns are all a part of the richEnglish heritage. The American sourcesinclude some hauntingly beautiful folkhymns and three hymns from the 1990’s.Of special delight to Americans is the sing-ing school repertoire from the late eigh-teenth and early nineteenth centuries. Ithas been well received by the ChristChurch congregation, and the next edi-tion of Cantus Christi will include moreof these fuguing-tunes. The next editionshould also include many more sources,as well as a greater number of more recenttunes.

The hymns are organized in five ma-jor categories: Sacraments, Festivals, Ado-ration, Supplication, and EveningHymns. The Sacrament section includesonly one baptismal hymn, but more willbe added. Hymns in the section of theLord’s Supper are hymns that specificallyrefer to the Supper. Other hymns whichalso work well for singing at communionare scattered throughout the other sec-tions. The Festival section follows the tra-ditional church calendar of Christ’s incar-nation (Advent, Christmas, andEpiphany), Christ’s passion (triumphalentry into Jerusalem, his suffering, and

death) Christ’s resurrection, Christ’s ascen-sion, the outpouring of the Holy Spirit atPentecost, and All Saints Day. The Festi-val section concludes with the Americantraditional festival of Thanksgiving. Insinging seasonal hymns year after year, thewhole church begins to think and act ac-cording to the liturgical season. All peopleare unified into communities by a calen-dar: the calendar of national holidays, theschool calendar, the sports seasons. Theseare not bad in themselves, but they don’tpoint us to Christ, the substance. Let usbe united as the people of Christ by thecalendar of the church and the seasonalcelebration of various aspects of our salva-tion. Let the communion of the saints andour united rejoicing in so great a salvationbe the organizing and coloring factors ofour lives.

DISTINCTIVE MUSICALFEATURESThe following features have been observedin editing the Psalms and hymns in thisvolume:

1. The pages are identified by pagenumbers only. The hymns are not givennumbers as in most hymnals.

2. Generally, all the stanzas of thehymn text are found in the music thusmaking it easier for those who like to singparts. No more than six verses are everfound between the treble and bass staves. When there are five stanzas, verse three isitalicized as a visual aid. When there aresix stanzas, both verses three and four areitalicized.

xiv

Page 14: Cantus Christi · 2008-07-16 · v A common practice in our day is for Chris-tians to speak of the “culture wars.” By this they usually mean the political and cul-tural skirmishes

3. There are no time signatures in anyof the Psalms or hymns except in onehymn where the meter changes for the re-frain. Otherwise, the meter is obvious orso varied that time signatures only causeconfusion.

4. Generally, barlines are used inmetered hymns when the metrical unitsremain constant throughout. Otherwise, they mark textual metrical units or areomitted altogether.

5. In music without barlines, such asthe Genevan psalms, rests in all parts can-cel accidentals from the previous phrase. In music with textual barlines, the barlineslikewise cancel accidentals. Cautionaryaccidentals are sometimes given for clar-ity.

6. Except for a few cases, sopranos andaltos share stems and beams when theirnote durations are the same. Otherwise, sopranos are stemmed up and altos arestemmed down. The same holds true forthe tenors and the basses.

7. Most of the music with no barlinesshould be sung with a half-note tactus(beat) rather than with the quarter-notetactus. This is especially true of theGenevan Psalms.

8. When one syllable is placed on sev-eral notes, a slur is used to indicate whichnotes go with a particular syllable. If thenotes are eighth notes, the slur is omittedand the beam indicates the notes that be-long to the syllable. This is particularlyimportant to observe when singing hymnsthat are derived from Gregorian chants.

9. Chant should be sung with naturalspeech rhythms, never metrically.

10. In the through-composed Psalms(95, 97, 127, and 133), the rubrics dec.,can., and full appear at various places inthe music. These are traditional Anglicandesignations indicating who should besinging. Dec. stands for decani, which isthe south side or the side where the deansits. Can. stands for cantoris, which is thenorth side or the side where the Precentor(cantor) sits. Both sides join together atthe designation full.

The texts of Anglican chants arewritten below the music. The first line oftext corresponds to the music up to thefirst light double bar. Each successive linecorresponds to the next section betweenthe light double bars or a light double barand the final double bar. Then the musicrepeats back to the beginning, except whenthere is an indication of singing the 2nd half.In that case the singers do not return tothe beginning of the music but sing it fromthe halfway point to the end. Slashes, dotsand bold type are the key to fitting thewords to the music between double bars.

Slashes correspond to the bar lines inthe music. Therefore, all the words orsyllables before the first slash are sung tothe whole note (or reciting tone) in thefirst bar of each section. Sometimes theremay be an extra passing tone in themeasure with the reciting tone. When thisoccurs, the extra note is sung with the lastsyllable before the slash.

The measures with half notemovement work this way:

1. When there are two syllables

ACKNOWLEDGMENTSThe project of Cantus Christi began at thesuggestion of Douglas Wilson. I met withDouglas Jones III and Douglas Wilson toset the guidelines for the publication ofthis hymnal. My great thanks goes to thesemen, who have been an encouragement tothe efforts of putting Cantus Christitogether. They have been more thanunderstanding and patient as this project

between the vertical lines in the text, eachsyllable is sung to one note.

2. If there are more than two syllablesbetween the slashes, the note changes willbe determined by the dots and bold type(called pointing).

a. If there are only two words andno other pointing, the first word corre-sponds to the first note and the secondword to the second note.

b. A dot is placed between syl-lables or words where there might beconfusion. The dot is the dividing point.Everything to the left of the point is sungon the first note, everything to the right ofthe point is sung on the second note.

3. If there is only one word or syllablebetween slashes it will be marked in boldtype. It is sung on both notes.

Although the music is marked inmeasures, there is no fixed rhythm. Thisis still chant, not metered music. As inmost chant, the cadence of the text dictatesthe rhythm and tempo of the chant. Themusic does not suddenly become metricalat the end of each section.

developed and grew. Thanks to the eldersfor their approval of this project. To thecongregation of Christ Church, thank youfor learning these Psalms and hymns, evenwhen they seemed too difficult at first. Thanks to the staff at Canon Press, espe-cially Doug Jones and Lucy Jones, whohave helped me step by step along the way.To my wife Kim, who spent more timeperhaps than I did on this project, my lov-ing thanks. God gave us our wives forhelpmeets, and He provided me with themost marvelous of all. Her untiring effortsat editing, and her suggestions, ideas andsupport have been the reason that thisproject has made it to this point. As Godmade husband and wife to be one flesh, sothis project is truly a product of one flesh. The greatest thanks and praise belong toour Triune God—Father, Son, and HolySpirit. The Son Himself taught us how togive thanks in the Eucharistic breaking ofbread and in drinking the cup of salvation. His sole sacrifice gives His people the bondof koinonia and binds the church in one.Soli Deo gloria!
