On behalf of Vancouver Community College, welcome to the VCC Career Fair. This event provides you with the opportunity to speak to a wide range of business and industry representatives. You’ll practice networking skills and gain a broader understanding of what career options are available in Vancouver and the Lower Mainland.

Make sure you take advantage of the free seminar at 12:30 p.m., as you may learn some useful tips and receive information to help in your career search.

1. Be strategic. Spend time reviewing the employers’ profiles in this program guide. Arrange employers in order of priority, from highest to lowest. Visit ideal employers after you have practised introducing yourself a few times.

2. Distribute your resumé. Giving employers your resumé or business card is a great way to make a connection and ensure they have your contact information.

3. Observe and listen to the questions others are asking while you’re waiting to speak to an employer so you don’t repeat the same ones.

4. Attend the free seminars being offered. Seminars are being held to help you prepare for the workforce. Come to these sessions prepared to take notes and ask our expert presenters your questions.

5. Research. Most employers don’t hire on the spot at career fairs. Take time to review employer company websites, and visit their job opportunity pages. Your dream job may be only a click away.

• Catch the employer’s eye with solid highlights, qualifications or profile section that summarizes what you bring to the position at hand.

• Use technical lingo associated with the field.

• Use action words with your bullets to highlight your skills relevant to the position.

• List your qualifications and experience in order of importance related to the position for which you are applying.

• Create a visually impactful resumé with good use of font. Avoid underlining.

• Keep your resumé short. One-or two-page resumés are recommended. Most employers are too busy to read more than that.

• Have your resumé proofread for spelling, clarity and completeness by a friend. Spelling mistakes demonstrate a lack of attention to detail.

Canada-BC Job Grant

Hospital Employees’ Union
