plaszow former concentration camp, krakow(univeristy project)

A tragic past, but how much do people want to remember?A piece of land that was once identified with death is

now seemingly forgotten, taken over by vegetation andstunning ecological landscapes.

The development of design came from a theme which Istarted to explore during my fieldwork: Edges.

It was clear that the site encompassed not only physicalboundaries and edges, but also atmospheric.

What creates these diverse spaces and their boundaries?Using ecology as a subtle yet symbolic tool,

continued to design to emphasise theseexisting boundaries - to create a journey of optional

experience through the site.

bellgrove cattle market, glasgow(university project)

The former cattle market is located in the east end of Glasgow, an areawith a rich history, but with a negative image brought by the dereliction and isolation

of spaces. I thought that this derelict site would be an excellent opportunity to try torevitalise this neighbourhood. My objectives were to: weave existing spaces

together; regain the historical grain of the site; re-establish built up, active edges;introduce residential blocks; define spaces to the west and east of the cattle

market; include community based functions within the building.

Malvina Green, Tornagrain

The brief was to create an informal space which would satisfy the needs of its neighbouring community. Creating an opportunity

for informal outdoor play will provide an important space for younger children (2-5 yrs)to connect with their natural environment.

Overleaf gives more detail on the types of play encouraged in the green.

willow structures, log seats and climbing elements, learning through nature

Malvina Green is a semi-private shared space primarily

for use by those residents opening onto it.

It is informal in character and will evolve over time to

satisfy the needs of its neighbouring ‘community’. The

aim is to provide a natural environment which creates

the opportunity for informal outdoor play – providing an

important opportunity for younger children (2-5years) to

connect with their natural environment. There are

opportunities to engage in physical activities such as

running, playing with a ball, rolling down banks, climbing

through tunnels as well as passive activities including

sitting in small groups or individually, watching nature up

close under the ‘bug mats’ or growing vegetables,

flowers and herbs in the communal growing spaces.

This local play provision complements more formal

facilities provided elsewhere within Tornagrain’s parks

which cater for older children as they become more

independent and require a different type of play

challenge.
