An acre of vineyards land can give the grower:Five tons of grapes (though it is also less, dependingon a variety of farming and winemaking practices, and on the varietal and the vineyards location) whichwill give you 797 gallons of juice (or thirteen-and-a-
half barrels) which is pretty close to four thousandbottles of wine.
One standard oak barrel of wine holds:
295 bottles of wine (or 59 gallons) made from 740 pounds of grapeswhich works out to almost but not precisely - 24 cases of wine.
One of the most asked questions asked when it comes to wine is how much of this does it take to make that, and so on. Wewont pretend that is simple, but here are some industry statistics that will give a pretty good answer to that query. As withanything agricultural, of course, they are all based on countless variables when it comes to acre yields, but this is a goodstarting point. The rest of the information varies little if at all.

Whatdoesall that information onawine labelmean?
The U.S. Department of Alcohol, Tobacco & Firearms regulates wine
labels and requires that information be given in a straightforward
way. Basically, you will want to look for the types of grapes grown,
where the grapes are grown and when the grapes were picked.
Brand name Designation for a special wine
Vineyard or appellation known for its grapes might be designated
Location where the grapes used were grown
Grape Variety used
Vintage year in which the grapes were picked
Location where the wine was made and/or bottled(Not to be confused with the area the grapes are grown.)

FUN FACTRotta Winery is the oldest and still family-ownedwinery on the Central Coast! Also, its one of the
only wineries on the Central Coast that makesSherry with the Black Monukka grape!
ABOUT THE VINESThe Zinfandel vines are a mixture of vines which range inage from 30 to 60 years old. They aredry landwhichmeans they only get water from Mother Nature. Theroots of these old vines go down 20 to 30 feet pullingmoisture and nutrients out of the shale and limestonesoil. The vines are alsohead pruned, which produces amuch fruitier berry but at a very reduced yield. Whenyou combine these characteristics together, you get a
glass of wine that you will never forget.

The original vineyard and winery were started in 1856 by
a Frenchman named Aldolf Siot, who later sold the successful
winery to Joe Rotta in 1908. In the 1920s, Joe Rotta then
sold it to his brother, Clement Rotta, who bonded the winery
after Prohibition. This forged the name Rotta into wine-
making history as one the best known wineries on the
Central Coast for its hearty Zinfandel. Today, the Rotta label
and winery are being revived by one of their grandsons,
Michael Giubbini, who remembers working in the vineyards
as a child, driving a tractor and tending the vineyards.
In 1990, Giubbini undertook the task of replanting some
of the forsaken vines in the old family vineyard to Zinfandel.
The short, stocky vines, with gnarled arms extending out-
ward, show their age and years of stressed growth. Mike
remembers pruning the vineyards (head pruned) and has
continued this viticultural technique for the Zinfandel to
date. Dry Farming, is the only way to go out here, de-
scribes Mikes belief on irrigation. He feels stressing the vine
produces the best quality, and obviously reduces the yield.
The 20 acres of the Estate vineyard are planted with 15 acres
to Zinfandel and five acres to Cabernet Sauvignon. Until
2002, the grapes were sold (but the label was vineyard desig-
nated as Giubbini Vineyards) to Castoro Cellars. The
vineyard designation for Giubbini Vineyards is a well
known name, and will remain so for many years.

While quite centrally located, the road to Croad Vineyards
certainly seems off the beaten path. Its surrounded by hun-
dred-year-old oaks covered in Spanish moss, so prominent on
the Westside of Paso Robles. Scattered between these giants are
olive trees and native flora such as lavender and orange poppy.
Opportunely situated in the heart of the Templeton gap, Croad
Vineyards 20 acres of vines are planted predominantly with
Zinfandel and Rhne varietals such as Grenache, Mourvedre
and Syrah. The soils here are calcareous, the microclimateideal and the views are incredible. Here youll taste award-
winning, old-world Zinfandels alongside full-bodied Rhne
blends.
Upon arriving at the tasting room, a sense of Kia Ora is
pressed immediately upon you. Kia Ora is a friendly greeting
meaning welcome in the native New Zealand language of
Maori. Owner and winemaker Martin Croad hails from down
under. Any guest may have a sense for that fact before even
entering the tasting room. The building, on the other hand, is
styled after California Missions with beautiful arches and richearth tones. Tasters can enjoy wine in the elegantly under-
stated main tasting room or numerous outside seating areas.
The most notable areas to hang are on the upper balcony or
lower fountain patio. Both boast incredible views of the famed
Templeton gap and rolling vineyards beyond. There is bounti-
ful seating for all guests to enjoy a flight or glass of wine
alongside a homemade picnic. This stop is well worth taking
the road less travelled. By Brette Ann Womack

Pomar Junction Vineyard & Winery is a family run winery
featuring wines from their estate vineyard. The vineyard and
tasting room is located at the junction of El Pomar Drive and
South El Pomar Road, in the El Pomar District of the Paso Rob-
les. The rustic, country tasting room, surrounded by the well-
cared-for vines, takes you back in time. The welcoming picnic
area beckons with colorful flowers and trees. It is easy to see
why, generation after generation, the family has stayed in the
area.
The Merrill Familys agricultural heritage and grape-growing
history dates back at least eight generations on Californias Cen-
tral Coast. After nearly 30 years of growing grapes for many of
the finest wineries in California, ranging from ultra premium
small producers to the largest international brands, the Merrills
decided to produce their own wines. Today Dana and Marsha
Merrill and son, Matthew farm the vineyards, while Matthews
winemaking is complemented by winemaker, Kevin Riley.
In addition to harvesting fruit from the family vineyards, blocks of grapes from Santa Barbara and Monterey counties are
selected from vineyards managed by a sister firm, Mesa Vine-
yard Management, Inc. All wines produced are exclusively
farmed by the Merrills who believe that control from planting
and pruning through harvest, fermentation and cellaring is
critical for success. Taste through the offering with their
friendly staff to experience the familys commitment to produc-
ing high quality wines. By Lisa Pretty

Mourvdre, Grenache, and Portuguese grape varietals Tinto
Cao and Touriga Nacional.
Nestled amongst the vines you will find the relaxing tastingroom with a patio to enjoy the views. In addition to the estate
grown wines you will also find some other fun varietals on the
tasting list including Roussanne, Viognier, Cabernet Franc and
Tempranillo. Paso Robles has a great reputation for producing
Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre (GSM) blends and Mitchella
makes two exceptional ones. The playfulness of the wine is de-
picted in the name with the 2008 Shameless and 2009
Cheap Bastard. If you are looking for a great value wine,
Cheap Bastard retails for just $15 per bottle.
For those with a sweet tooth you will not want to miss the
Mitchella line of port-style wine. They have a Riportella Bianco
which is their first white port-style wine, a tawny that is made
from multiple vintages as well as single vintage offerings. With
the Tinto Cao and Touriga grapes grown on the property they
are able to make a true Portuguese style dessert wine.
The small production makes these wines a little hard to find
so be sure to stop by the tasting room to meet the family, taste
the wines and understand why they all say Life is an Adven-
ture, Drink Wine.

Followingthe picturesque winding roads of Tepesquet and Foxen Canyon will lead you to world-class wineries by way of sprawling vineyards and rolling hills. In themore northern region of the appellation, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir reign due to the maritime climate. This ensures a long temperate growing season whichthe Burgundian varietals crave. In the southern region of the appellation, the trail moves a bit east resulting in hotter days and cooler nights. Bordeaux andRhne varieties flourish in this more extreme climate. When Gold Coast Farms first started growing fruit and veg-
etables on the Central Coast in the late 1970s, they never
dreamed that their portfolio of strawberries, broccoli, cilantro,
spinach, cauliflower and sweet corn would one day also in-
clude wine. But thats exactly what happened in 1989, when
owners Ron Burk and Bob Expinola realized that their 20-acre
property on Foxen Canyon Road, with its well-drained, sandy
loam soil, was poor for vegetable growth, but perfect for wine
grapes. So they planted Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, and thus
Costa De Oro Vineyard and Winery was born.
The very name, Costa De Oro means Gold Coast in Span-
ish, and is a reference to the rich Spanish heritage of the area,
while the swirls on every wine label offer a representation of
the different factors that help create their unique wines: the
sun, the terroir and the waves of the ocean that help bring the
wind to keep the area cool. All of these factors equate to perfect
growing conditions for the fickly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir
grapes. Winemaker Gary Burk uses old-world winemaking
techniques and new-world growing practices in order to exem-
plify the unique flavors of their Gold Coast Vineyard as well asthe grapes themselves in order to produce wines with beautiful
balance and complexity.
All travelers along the 101 freeway will not be able to miss
the Costa De Oro tasting room in Santa Maria, as it was the lo-
cation of the original Gold Coast Farms strawberry stand. The
tasting room offers the perfect place to enjoy these unique and
handcrafted wines. But dont take my word for it; the proof is
in each bottle. By CarolynTurner

Tres Hermanas Vineyard & Winery was founded in 2001
by Marvin and Paulette Teixeira with the planting of a small
vineyard on their family owned cattle ranch. The ranch is still
the headquarters for the family cattle operation, but wine is
now part of the equation. Part of the allure of visiting is the
magnificent huge 300-year-old oak tree out front, and that
the property is postcard perfect. There are a lot of wine coun-
try weddings here too, in part because the front lawn is
perfectly manicured and is surrounded by oak trees and roseswith views to the Syrah vines on the property. The mountains
form an ideal backdrop and at dusk the stars illuminate the
sky and youll swear it cant get any better than this.
The 1940s barn has been converted and restored into a
tasting room and the wood cross beams on the ceiling and
wood bar give it a homey, ranch feel. Theres also plenty of
room inside to hold your own private indoor functions. A
classic mechanical horse, emblazoned with the words Ride
the Champion, is the first thing you see when you walk into
the room and for 25 cents, you can ride like a kid while lis-tening to the theme of Bonanza. Their wine label is a picture
of the barn that exhibits the JT cattle brand, which was Mar-
vins fathers brand used to identify cattle. Tres Hermanas,
which means the Three Sisters, was named for their three
daughters, Stacey, Tracey and Marcey. There are also diverse
gift items and, best of all, a reasonably priced lineup of wines.

come for a taste of both the history of winemaking in Santa
Ynez Valley as well as the wines that the Firestone family has

belief that the Santa Ynez Valley could grow, let alone produce,
world-class wines was a belief shared by a select few. Luckily

Tucked away in the rolling hills of the Foxen Canyon wine

Over the last 30 years, Qup owner Bob Lindquist hasachieved a sort of legendary status in the wine world. Lindquisthas been involved in the Santa Barbara County wine industrysince its beginnings as a modern wine region in the mid 1970sand was an early advocate of growing Rhne grapes in the re-gion, focusing specifically on Syrah. In 1982, Lindquist startedQup winery and today, he continues to help increase recogni-tion of the region world-wide through production of hisRhne-style wines.
The name Qup comes from the local Chumash Indianword for poppy, as it seemed only fitting to pay homage to theoriginal cultivators of the land. Lindquist wanted to convey hisdedication to growing and producing local wines, and so chosethe iconic California poppy to represent his brand. Each Quplabel is graced by yet another poppy. One of which was origi-nally a quilt design by the craftsman-era artist Gustav Stickley.
The focus of the Qup wines has always been on producingwines that exhibit the unique flavors of both the terroir and thegrape varieties, which is why he chose to source from the
world-renowned Bien Nacido Vineyard. In 2002, Lindquistand his wife Louisa purchased an 80-acre property in Edna
Valley near San Luis Obispo, and are growing both French andSpanish-style grapes biodynamically.
A visit to the Qup tasting room in Los Olivos will quicklyreveal that winemaking runs in the Lindquist family. Visitorswill often be greeted by Bobs daughter Paige, who manages thetasting room, or taste the Verdad and Ethan wines, made byBobs wife and son, respectively. Youre sure to feel like one ofthe family too before you leave! By CarolynTurner

The term, one of a kind comes to mind when describing
Coghlan. With its tasting room in a refurbished Victorian
home in Los Olivos, hand-crafted jewelry made by the own-
ers and an array of wines to enjoy, one cannot help but to be
inspired in the surroundings.
Husband and wife team Eric and Samantha Coghlan, met
while studying at Gemological Institute of America. Eric, a
third-generation jeweler, and Samantha, a tremendously tal-
ented craftswoman (she started her first jewelry line at
sixteen), see the wine and jewelry industries as very similar.
Samantha explains, My husband is a huge fan of minerals
and gemstone specimens, we look at the wine industry as a
type of a parallel to the jewelry industry. You take something
the earth gives you and then you facet it into a desirable fin-
ished product. We do this with wine grapes as well as with
the gemstones that the earth provides us with.
Visitors can taste wine, browse jewelry, play bocce ball in
the yard and enjoy the nostalgic nature of the home, whichboasts a rich history. The Coghlans were happy to maintain
the integrity of the Sears kit home built in the late 1890s,
formerly owned by the Whitmore family, long-time influ-
encers in the Los Olivos art community. Eric and Samantha
are constantly creating unique pieces on display in the house.
At Coghlan, wines and jewelry will continue to proliferate
the arts in the area. By BrandiStansbury

The yellow Craftsman-style house (currently housing thetasting room) was originally ordered out of a Sears andRoebuck catalogue in 1926. At that time the railroad ranalong Alamo Pintado Road, and the home was deliveredin pieces then carried up the hill by teams of donkeys andassembled. Now, nearly 100 years later, the home remainsin much the same condition!

When businessman and financier Bill Foley moved his
family to Santa Barbara in 1994, he saw the realization of his
life-long dream: to become a vintner of premier Burgundian-
style wines. Foley founded Lincourt in 1996 and named it for
his two daughters, Lindsay and Courtney.
Under the watchful eye of renowned winemaker Leslie
Mead Renaud, the 50-acres of estate Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet
Sauvignon and Merlot are farmed vine by vine, with Renaud
taking the best blocks (or rows) of grapes to create each wine.
Renaud also uses some of the best Pinot Noir and Chardonnay
grapes from Foley Vineyards to create wines that are both ap-
proachable and affordable. Both Lincourt and Foley Vineyards
practice sustainable farming techniques in order to ensure the
highest quality of wine from grape to glass.
Drawing from years of experience working for wineries
throughout California, Renaud shares Foleys commitment to
quality winemaking. Each wine is aged in French Oak barrels
for nine to twelve months, with the focus on creating winesthat exemplify the unique terroir and varietal-rich flavors.
As you arrive at Lincourt, the iconic windmill that also
graces each of their wine labels will greet you as you enter the
old farmhouse, now their tasting room. The relaxing atmos-
phere and beautiful property offers something for the whole
family, whether wine tasting, picnicking or enjoying a bottle as
you bask in the beauty of the Santa Ynez Valley.

Imagine drinking incredibly flavorful and distinctive wines
you cant put down Imagine. Thats exactly what Lyn Dee
and Ross Rankin did when they moved to the Santa Ynez Valley
in 1994. As Lyn Dee says, to do anything significant in life,
you first have to imagine
Their shared love of wine led them to follow their vision of
starting a small, boutique winery in Santa Ynez, a dream that
brought them to source fruit from Paradise Mountain Vineyard
in Santa Ynez Valley and Sunny Slope Vineyard in Paso Robles,as well as several other unique Central Coast properties.
With such high-quality, small-lot wines, the Rankins knew
they needed a truly unique label to exemplify the wine within.
Enter Pearl, the name given to the lovely nude woman on
their Pearl wine labels. The object of her upward gaze is un-
known to the viewer, which captured the Rankins imagination.
The original painting hangs in their friends home in Malibu,
and is an original Geza Kende, a Hungarian painter who
worked in Hollywood in the 1940s. Kende painted portraits of
many famous stars including Bella Lagose and Gloria Swanson.
A visit to the downtown Santa Ynez tasting room will reveal
there is much more to capture the imagination than just the
delicious Imagine wines. Also a fine art gallery, they feature the
modern and figurative paintings of Karina Puente, the brightly
colored music and dance-themed paintings of Tera Thornton,
the stone sculptures of Blake Rankin and western landscapes of
Robert Karl Vogel.
I imagine that just one visit to this unique Santa Ynez winery
will leave you wanting more! By CarolynTurner

Santa Rita Hills, on Californias Central Coast, arguably produces the highest quality Pinot Noir from California. This relatively new appellation consists of only
100 acres and is located between the Pacific Ocean and the historic Danish town of Solvang. The two coastal east-west oriented valleys between the Sta. Rita
Hills offer maritime climate and unique soils, which produces exceptionally concentrated flavors in the grapes from this region. Pinot Noir of the highest ac-
claim has been made from vineyards in Sta. Rita Hills and visitors are welcome to taste the wines in the many tasting rooms along Highway 246. This wine
and food destination of the Central Coast can be visited year round and is conveniently located halfway between Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo.

Over time, the Lompoc wine ghetto, a group of thirteen
wineries spread throughout an industrial complex, has become
a major destination for wine connoisseurs. Palmina sits on the
edge of the ghetto, produces Italian varietals and operates with
a mission claiming, Palmina is more than a winery and
enoteca. It is a philosophy and it is a passion. It is a strongly
held belief that wine is an extension of the plate, a component
of a meal and a means to bring people together.
Tasting room manager Lee Lathouwers further explains thesocial philosophy of Palmina, This is translated in the tasting
room. When you come to taste wine at Palmina you are
warmly greeted by a staff member, and then immediately
served with a wonderful platter that is filled with a bit a cheese,
breadsticks and fresh olive oil that is made by Palmina. We
strive to give you the best experience that really makes you re-
alize that wine is an essential part of a meal. It is just as
important as having a knife and fork. A great meal cannot be
without a great bottle of wine, and a great bottle of wine, can-
not be without a great meal.Palmina focuses on Italian varietals grown locally and own-
ers Steve and Chrystal Clifton have storied backgrounds in the
wine in the Santa Barbara County wine industry. Together, they
have created a space that is more than a traditional tasting
room, but celebrates the engaging social activity that wine tast-
ing should be. Friday evenings the tasting room is open later
serving wines by the glass and encouraging the sociability wine
provides. By BrandiStansbury
