NOTES FROM THE EDITORS

All good things must come to an end!!

Welcome to the final edition of the Cedarvale Orchids catalogue dated May 2017 – yes……. we are bidding our customers farewell as we move into retirement from our orchid business. This is our official publication available in both printed and online versions which focuses on Australian native orchids.

Cedarvale Orchids commenced in 1997. Over the past 20 years we have been working to achieve a higher percentage of product diversity for our customers, providing advanced plants for landscapers and also export to customers in United States. We pride ourselves in having a reputation for being a consistent and specialist supplier of native orchids and especially provenance specific Dendrobium speciosum.

Over the years and in collaboration with other well known growers we have produced crossings with many excellent and hard to attain clones. We believe we have contributed to the quality and variety of Australian native orchids proven by the number of awards and prizes we and others have obtained.

A big thankyou to our customers for your support over this period and trust that you have been pleased with the outcome of your purchases.

We will continue to attend shows during 2017 however our final show will be the ANOS (Qld) Kabi Group Spring Show on 26-27 August. After this event we plan to release the remaining stock and a number of breeding plants and have always given our customers first access to these special releases via email or our website. Customers should check our website www.cedarvaleorchids.com for these releases. If you would like to be added to the list of recipients for future updates please let us know.

This catalogue consists of new listings of species and hybrids and the remaining stock of hard cane & intermediate seedlings and Den speciosum which are mainly near-flowering size.

Since our previous catalogue we have benched a number of champions……..the latest being Champion Den bigibbum at the Queensland Orchid Society Show on 14-15 April 2017. See our picture below of a clone named ‘Little Rhonda’ which had its first public showing.

Should you wish to obtain any further information about the shows we attend please either see the Events Page on our website or send us an email. If you do not have access to the internet - simply send an SAE with your request.

Over the years we have made many friends and acquaintances whose passion for orchids is similar to ours and we will miss the camaraderie and discussions with them. Our gates will still always be open for visitors so don’t forget if you are up this way we would love you to drop in.... but always phone before you come – it is a long way to come to find no-one home.

And as always good luck and good growing.

CV1009/12

Hybrid

SOLD

D Greta Snow ‘Samford Celestial’ FCC/AOC x speciosum v speciosum ‘Heather’ AM/ANOS

This is the first release of plants made with the awarding winning ‘Samford Celestial’ which proved very difficult to breed with. I am not sure how you better an FCC plant but mating with ‘Heather’ may provide plenty of texture to the already impressive flowers.

50mm/80mm

SOLD

CV1010/12

Species

SOLD

D speciosum v curvicaule ‘Misty Mtn’ HCC/ANOS x ‘Jacqueline

Two top var curvicaule mated which should produce results similar to the ‘Jaq’s Moon’ cross (‘Daylight Moon’ x ‘Jacqueline’) which produced the highest number of bench quality/championship plants of any cross we have ever made.

50mm/80mm

SOLD

CV1011/12

SOLD

D speciosum v curvicaule ‘Misty Mtn’ HCC/ANOS x ‘Daylight Moon’ FCC/AOC

This is a remake of an earlier cross which produced extremely good bench quality plants with all the attributes of the ‘Dave’s Moon’ cross but with heavier texture.

80mm

SOLD

CV1012/12

Species

SOLD

D speciosum v curvicaule ‘Daylight Moon’ FCC/AOC x ‘Misty Mtn’ HCC/ANOS

Reverse cross of CV1011/12. My belief is that the pod parent has the greater influence on the progeny and these plants could be slightly better in presentation than the CV1011 plants.

50mm/80mm

SOLD

CV1013/12

Hybrid

SOLD

D Essie Banks ‘Tom Richards’ x speciosum v curvicaule ‘Bob’

The ‘Essie Banks’ used here is highly marked as can be seen in the picture on p.6. We are looking for a result similar to ‘Avril’s Gold’ – heavy textured flowers on medium sprays, bright yellow/gold in colour and solid marking.
