On Saturday, July 8th, at 10:00am, we will be traveling to Vance County to tour the following sites:

1. Knotts Crossroads (community where our Wilson ancestors were enslaved)

2. Wilson Plantation (location where our patriarch, Henry Wilson, and his mother,

Hannah Wilson, were enslaved)

3. Barker Plantation (location where our patriarch, Henry Wilson and his wife, Lucy

Marrow Wilson, lived in 1870)

4. Historic Wilson Slave Cemetery (enslaved from the Wilson plantation that

owned our Wilson family) The tour will end at the slave cemetery where we will

pay tribute to the enslaved Wilsons with African song, dance, and prayer.

Anyone interested in attending this tour needs to RSVP, since we need to have a headcount in advance. We need to get permission from the plantation owners to go onto the plantations. Both plantations are still owned by the same families who owned them from the beginning. Pamela Bagley-Williams is in contact with owners of both plantations.

To RSVP: send a text or call (757) 676-1387 or e-mail to [email protected].

It will be at the cemetery where Pam will announce the “Historic Cemetery for the Enslaved Wilson Family Project”. This project is groundbreaking for the family as it will be the beginning of our efforts to pay tribute to our enslaved by raising money to restore the cemetery, install a fence, and purchase a memorial sign or monument. It is also her vision to see an archway into the cemetery with the name “Wilson” on it. This will be an ongoing project that she will oversee until its completion. Every Wilson descendant is encouraged to support this monumental project!

Stroke By The Numbers

Each year nearly 800,000 people experience a new or recurrent stroke.

A stroke happens every 40 seconds. Stroke is the fifth leading cause of death in

the U.S. Every 4 minutes someone dies from stroke. Up to 80 percent of strokes can be

prevented. Stroke is the leading cause of adult disability

in the U.S.

Signs and Symptoms of Stroke

Knowing the signs and symptoms of a stroke is the first step to ensuring medical help is received immediately. For each minute a stroke goes untreated and blood flow to the brain continues to be blocked, a person loses about 1.9 million neurons. This could mean that a person’s speech, movement, memory, and so much more can be affected.

FAST is an easy way to remember and identify the most common symptoms of a stroke. Recognition of stroke and calling 9-1-1 will determine how quickly someone will receive help and treatment. Getting to a hospital rapidly will more likely lead to a better recovery.

FACE: Ask the person to smile. Does one side of the face droop?

ARMS: Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?

SPEECH: Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase. Is their speech slurred or strange?

TIME: If you observe any of these signs, call 9-1-1 immediately.

HEALTH TIP: National Stroke Awareness

Stroke is the fifth leading cause of death in America and a leading cause of adult disability. Yet, research shows that too few people know what a stroke is and how to recognize when stroke is happening.

Learn more about stroke, how to prevent a stroke from happening to you, and how learning the signs and symptoms could save the life of your loved ones.

What is a Stroke?

A stroke is a "brain attack". It can happen to anyone at any time. It occurs when blood flow to an area of brain is cut off. When this happens, brain cells are deprived of oxygen and begin to die. When brain cells die during a stroke, abilities controlled by that area of the brain such as memory and muscle control are lost.

How a person is affected by their stroke depends on where the stroke occurs in the brain and how much the brain is damaged. For example, someone who had a small stroke may only have minor problems such as temporary weakness of an arm or leg. People who have larger strokes may be permanently paralyzed on one side of their body or lose their ability to speak. Some people recover completely from strokes, but more than 2/3 of survivors will have some type of disability.

A different family member will be highlighted in each newsletter. Please email us, if you know of a family member who you would like to see included

Perhaps you have already heard, but we are sounding the trumpet to let all of the descendants of our beloved Ancestor - Rev. Freddie Wilson know that he is being honored at this year's family reunion.

The Wilson family has made great strides and received many accolades in many fields of endeavor.

And undoubtedly the bedrock and foundation of all the great accomplishments of the Wilson family has been our profound spirituality and faith in Almighty God.

Perhaps the greatest promoter and sustainer of this great spiritual legacy is our ancestor - REV. FREDDIE WILSON.

Many of us remember the long fervent prayers granddaddy prayed over the delightful, delectable, delicious meals prepared on that old wood stove on Goshen Street in Oxford, by grandma Cindy.

We also remember the nightly bedside prayers that seemed to be endless. But we live on those prayers today. GRANDDADDY prayed for us, had us on his mind, took the time to pray for us, we’re so glad he prayed, we’re so glad he prayed for us!! Gloraaaaaaaaay!!!!

While he was still with us, the family reunion never started until he got there, his clothes soaked from having just finished preaching a sermon. He would then lead us in devotional singing and prayer.

A gigantic banner will be erected at the reunion in North Carolina in July with his picture, a picture of Morning Star Baptist Church and the New Light Baptist Church, churches that he pastored during his lifetime. There will also be other tributes to him recognizing the great spiritual legacy that he bequeathed not only to his immediate descendants but to the entire Wilson family. We will embrace all that he meant and continues to mean to us in July.

LOVE REQUIRES YOUR PRESENCE, FAMILY DEMANDS IT AND YOUR COMMITTMENT COMPELS IT!!!

Rev. Willie F. Wilson
