Your stay in our hospital
Confirming your admission dateBefore you come to the hospital, pleaseconfirm that a bed is available for you.Please read the instructions on youradmission letter carefully to find out whenand who you should call. We will doeverything possible to make sure youradmission date does not change. Veryoccasionally, an emergency admissionmight need to be given priority.
What if I cannot make my admissiondate?If you cannot make your admission date,please telephone the number on youradmission letter straight away torearrange your appointment. Please alsocall this number if you think you may havebeen exposed to an infection (such aschicken pox) or develop any of thefollowing symptoms within three daysbefore your admission date:● cough● diarrhoea● cold● vomiting

Wheelchair accessAll pedestrian entrances to the hospitalare suitable for wheelchairs. If you needassistance on arrival please tell ourreception staff. They can arrange for aporter to help you, though you may haveto wait for this.There are disabled toilets throughout ourhospitals and disabled/ blue badgeparking is available free of charge todrivers parked in a designated space anddisplaying the correct blue badge permit.Charges will apply if you are not parkedwithin a designated space.
Overseas patientsIf you are an overseas visitor and havebeen resident in the UK for the last 12 months you will need to bring yourpassport and documentation as proof of eligibility for free treatment. Suitabledocuments include payslips, benefit lettersand college attendance letters.If you are a visitor and not a UK residentyou will need to pay before any treatmentis given (this excludes the accident andemergency department).You can contact the overseas visitors’office at Northwick Park Hospital on 020 8869 5189 or at Central MiddlesexHospital on 020 8453 2512.

Coming in to hospital
What to bringIf you are being admitted for a plannedprocedure or operation you will have timeto pack a small bag. We recommend youinclude:● Letters from your doctor about your
admission● The medicine you are taking● Soap, shampoo, toothpaste and other
washing aids, including a towel● Shaving material (battery operated
shavers only, please)● Dressing gown, slippers and nightwear● Day clothes – a tracksuit or other
comfortable clothes● A small amount of money for papers,
snacks and drinks● Books and magazines● Any walking aids you use● Proof of entitlement to free travel costs,
if appropriate (information on p25)You will have a small bedside locker tokeep your belongings in, but don’t bringany valuables. We cannot acceptresponsibility for any loss of propertywhile you are with us.

Finding your way to ourhospitals
If you are staying overnight you will notwant to come by car, so it is best to usepublic transport, a taxi or get a lift in froma family member or friend. For moreinformation ring the Transport for Londontravel line on 0843 222 1234 or visitwww.tfl.gov.uk.Finding your way to Northwick Park, StMark’s and Central Middlesex hospitals isstraightforward whether you are comingby public transport or private vehicle.

BusesBus routes 186, 223, H9, H10 and H14enter the grounds of the hospitals, androute 182 stops a short distance away onWatford Road. Bus routes 114 and 183stop on Kenton Road, about a 10 minutewalk from the hospitals.Low floor, wheelchair accessible buses runon all these routes.
Tube and rail linksNorthwick Park tube station is on theMetropolitan Line, and is the neareststation to the hospitals, a five minute walkaway. Kenton station (Bakerloo andLondon Overground service) is about a10-15 minute walk away.

By car
Northwick Park and St Mark’s Hospitalsare situated on one site along the WatfordRoad in Harrow, near the Northwick Parkroundabout and next to the PlaygolfNorthwick Park golf club. Please note thatthe site must be approached from theroundabout to the north; no right-turnsfrom the south are permitted. Parking isavailable throughout the hospital groundsin car parks 1 (multi-storey), 2, 3 and 4;these locations are signposted from thehospital ring road, where we ask you toobserve the speed limit of 10mph.● Car parking charges do apply at all
times if you park in one of our carparks. Please make sure you pay anddisplay your ticket.
● Disabled/ blue badge parking is availablefree of charge to drivers parked in adesignated space and displaying thecorrect blue badge permit.
● Easy access parking for the outpatientdepartment is available in the multi-storey carpark.
● Weekly passes are available and thesecan be obtained from the car parkingoffice next to the accident andemergency entrance.
● Drop-off and pick-up points are locatedoutside the main entrance toNorthwick Park and St Mark’shospitals, Theatre admissions unit,Maternity and the Lister unit.

BusesBuses 187, 224, 226, 260, 440, 487 andPR2 stop outside the main entrance of thehospital.
Tube linksHarlesden (Bakerloo Line), Park Royal(Piccadilly Line) and North Acton (CentralLine) stations are each about a mile from the hospital and are a short walk or bus ride.
By car
Central Middlesex Hospital is on Acton Lane,Park Royal, opposite the ASDA superstoreand close to the Westway (A40/M40) andthe North Circular Road (A406).There are two main car parks at CentralMiddlesex Hospital. Car park 1 at surfacelevel is accessed from Central Way; you canalso get to the car park from Acton Lane ifyou are dropping off at Accident andEmergency or the main entrance. Theentrance to car park 2 (basement parking) ison Abbey Road. Car park 2 is closed to thepublic from 8.30pm until 7.30am.● Car parking charges do apply at all times
if you park in one of our car parks. Pleasemake sure you pay and display your ticket.

Your inpatient care
Arriving at the hospitalWhether you arrive at Central Middlesex,Northwick Park or St Mark’s Hospital goto reception and show your appointmentletter. You will then be directed to theright ward/department where you will bemet by the nurse in charge and shownyour bed.
Your careYou will be cared for on a ward thatspecialises in your condition. Before youhave any treatment the doctor or nursewill explain what is planned and ask if youhave any questions. We cannot, by law,carry out any operation or procedurewithout your informed consent unless it isan emergency or you are unconscious. If you have any questions, worries orconcerns about your treatment or careplease speak to a member of staff andask as many questions as you like.
Doctors’ ward roundsYou will be seen and reviewed by a doctorregularly, Monday to Friday.Out of hours and at weekends you will beseen if your condition changes or if youare to be discharged.

If you or your next of kin need moreinformation an appointment can beorganised by ward staff.It will not just be doctors who visit you onthe ward. Our specialist teams are madeup of many healthcare professionals, whowill help with your care. All members ofstaff will introduce themselves to you andwear an identity badge. If you are not surewho someone is please feel free to ask.
MedicinesYour medicines are an important part ofyour treatment while in hospital and athome. If you have any questions aboutyour medicines during your stay, pleaseask the pharmacist, doctor or nurse.
Questions you have may include:● What is my medicine for?● How do I take it?● For how long do I keep taking it?● Are there any foods, drinks, or
medicines to avoid when taking mymedicine?
● What if I miss a dose?● What are the side effects and what do
I do if they occur?

On discharge, your medicines will beprovided with an information leaflet; ifyou have any further questions about yourmedicines, please call our MedicinesHelpline on 020 8869 2762. Moreinformation about your discharge can befound on page 29.
Your pain controlIf during your stay you are in pain,please make sure you let a member ofnursing staff know so they can makesure you are more comfortable.
Keeping your relatives in touchWhile you are in hospital your family orfriends may request information aboutyour condition. We advise that younominate one person only as a point ofcontact. This person can keep the rest ofyour family, friends or carers updated onyour progress. We do have a responsibilityto protect your confidentiality so telephoneinformation is not generally given.
Privacy, dignity and respectAll patients have a right to privacy and tobe treated with dignity and respect. Webelieve that providing same-sexaccommodation is an important way ofensuring that you have the best possibleexperience while you’re in hospital. If youwish to discuss any aspect of your care inprivate please feel free to contact amember of ward staff.

What is same-sex accommodation?We provide same-sex accommodation.This means we provide sleeping areas andtoilet and washing facilities that are formen or women only. You could be in:● a same-sex ward, where the whole
ward is occupied by either men orwomen only
● a single room ● a mixed ward, where men and women
are in separate bays or rooms. Toiletand washing facilities should be easy to get to, and not a long way fromyour bed.
In exceptional circumstances providingsame-sex accommodation may not bepossible. This would be based on clinicalneed (for example, when patients needspecialist equipment such as in ourIntensive Care Units).
Pressure soresIf you are staying as an inpatient for a few days and you are bed bound, it isimportant that you change your positionin bed regularly to help prevent pressuresores. Your nurse will discuss yourindividual needs when you arrive on the ward.

Meal timesThere is a choice of meals suitable formost dietary, ethnic and religious needs.
We have protected meal times tominimise interruptions so you canenjoy your meal. Meal times varyslightly between each ward. Yourmeals will be served between:Breakfast: 8am - 9amLunch: 12pm - 2.30pmSupper: 5.30pm - 7pm
Please ask your visitors not to visit duringthese times, unless they have spoken witha member of nursing staff and are helpingyou with your meal.If you have arranged to have foodbrought to you from home, you musteat it immediately and not reheat orrefrigerate it. The hospital cannottake responsibility for any food borneillness contracted while in hospital.Ward staff will provide you withinstructions regarding the methodsrequired in the handling and storageof this food.Hot drinks are also served from trolleysduring the day, and we have restaurantsin all our hospitals which you can use ifyou are well enough to leave the ward.You may like to take your visitors there.

Visiting timesThe ward staff are aware that patientsbenefit from regular visits from family andfriends. However, patient care andtreatment must take priority and the privacyand dignity of patients must be maintained.
Visitors are asked to visit between the hours of*:
2.30pm and 4.30pm and 6.30pm and 8pm
*These times are a guide and may varyslightly on some wards, please check with ward staff.
If you are helping with the care of arelative staying on a ward, pleasespeak to the nurse in charge aboutvisiting outside of the designatedvisiting times.
Our children’s, maternity and St Mark’sHospital wards have different visitingtimes. Please check with ward staff fortimes and details of any restrictions whenvisiting these wards.

We request that there are only two visitorsper patient at any one time. We do notallow children under 12 to visit, unlessthere are special circumstances - pleasecheck with a member of staff.
If there are circumstances that make thestated visiting hours difficult, please speakto the nurse in charge.

Reducing infectionsOur record on MRSA, C Difficile and otherinfections is very good, but we need helpfrom patients and visitors.
You can help by:
● Washing your hands before you eat or drink
● Washing your hands after using the toilet
● Not touching wounds, drips orcatheters
● Not sitting on another patient’s bed and not letting your visitors sit on your bed
● Asking visitors not to visit if theyhave a cold/flu, diarrhoea,vomiting, rash or any otherinfection
● Not bringing flowers in.
And as a patient don’t be shy of askingdoctors and nurses if they have washedtheir hands.

Other useful information
ValuablesPlease avoid bringing anything of valueinto hospital, as you are responsible foryour valuables while here. In urgent casessmall items of jewellery and money can belocked away in the ward safe for a shorttime until you can make arrangements tosend them home. The Trust does notaccept responsibility for cash orvaluables which are not depositedwith the hospital for safe keeping.You will be asked to sign a disclaimer ifyou choose to keep valuables with you.
Travel costsIf you are on a low income or benefits youmay be entitled to reclaim your publictransport costs to and from the hospital.Full details of how you can claim yourexpenses can be found atwww.nwlh.nhs.uk/travel-costs or call the Health Cost advice line on 0845 850 1166.

Mobile phones and PatientlineMobile phones can be used on the wardbut we advise that the ring tone is on lowor vibrate so as not to disturb otherpatients. However, due to fire regulations,phone chargers cannot be plugged in onthe ward, this also includes charginglaptops.If you have a Patientline TV monitor andtelephone by your bed and you would liketo subscribe to use this service during yourstay in hospital, all you need to do is pickup the phone handset and speak to aPatientline customer care advisor. Thisinitial phone call is free.
Electrical equipment Only battery operated items are allowedto be used on the ward, due to fireregulations.
LaundryPlease note that there are no on-sitelaundry services or facilities.
ToiletriesIn an emergency we can supply basictoiletries until you can makearrangements for your family or carers tobring toiletries for you.

ShopsA restaurant, coffee shop, fruit andvegetable stall and WHSmith are availablein all our hospitals.WHSmith operates a ward trolley round at Northwick Park. A hairdressers and adry cleaners are also located on level 4 at Northwick Park.
Radio Northwick ParkThe Trust is proud to support NorthwickPark Radio, our award-winning radiostation which is supported entirely bycharitable donations. Make sure you listenin to their fantastic programmes whileyou’re in hospital! Sorry, this service is notavailable at Central Middlesex Hospital.
Chaplaincy serviceIt’s important that you can continue topractise your faith while in our hospitals.The Trust employs Chaplains who areChristian, Hindu, Muslim and Jewish. They also have contact numbers for otherfaith groups within the community.We have a number of Faith Rooms onboth sites. At Northwick Park the Chapelis situated on the main corridor and thereis a Prayer Room near the main entrance.There is a Multi Faith centre on the firstfloor at Central Middlesex. These areascan be used by individuals of all faiths orfor those seeking a quiet and peacefulplace.

All wards have a list of chaplains’ contactnumbers but you can also ask a nurse tocontact a chaplain on your behalf.

Going home
The staff looking after you will help youplan for when you are ready to leavehospital. This is sometimes described asyour discharge home. If you have anyproblems or concerns about going homeplease inform the nursing staff. Co-ordinating your discharge requiresgood planning and may involve waitingfor medicines and a review by medicalstaff. We ask that you arrange your owntransport home. If you have any medicalneed for hospital transport, please discussthis with a senior member of the nursingteam.In the morning on the day you are due togo home, you will be transferred to thedischarge lounge to wait untilarrangements have been made for you tobe picked up.Ward staff will make sure before you aredischarged that:
● You have clear information about anyfuture planned treatment, includingoutpatient appointments
● You know how to care for yourselfafter your hospital treatment
● You have enough medicine, or, if not, it is prescribed before you leave
● Your GP and/or any community staffwho care for you in your

neighbourhood have been informedthat you are going home.
● The letter to the GP will normally becopied to you.
If you are worried about your condition ortreatment within a month of leaving thehospital please contact the ward thatcared for you.
Comments/suggestionsWe are always happy to listen to anycomments or suggestions that you mayhave, as it helps us to improve services. If you have worries or fears aboutyour care during your stay pleasespeak to a member of ward staff, sowe can do our best to resolve anyissues at the time they arise.During your stay you will be asked to useone of our patient experience devices, andwhen you are ready to go home we willask you to fill in a patient satisfactionsurvey. We rely on your information toensure that we continue to provide aquality service. If you do not have time tofill in a patient survey before you leave thehospital you will be able to fill it in on ourwebsite at www.nwlh.nhs.uk/feedback.

Data protection
When you come to hospital we ask youfor a lot of information about yourself.Staff are contractually and ethically boundto maintain confidentiality. All yourinformation is held in accordance with theData Protection Act 1998.
Clinical information about you is kept onour computerised and paper informationsystems, we need your information as wemust be able to identify who you are – wehold your name, address and date of birthto help us do this. You are given a uniquehospital number which is used to locateyour hospital records and we use yourNHS Number in communication aboutyou with other organisations involved inyour care.
Your records are kept to ensure thatclinicians have a complete and continuousrecord about your past, current and futuretreatment.
We do our best to keep the informationwe hold about you accurate but to do thiswe need your help which is why we askyou at each visit whether your details havechanged, for example your GP. Please tellus if you think we hold information aboutyou in our records which is out of date.
