After the conference, the National Trust organised a week-long study visit for Marie Petrmanov and me, focusing on publically accessible buildings in North Wales. During excursions to Penrhyn Castle and the country houses of Powis, Chirk, and Erdigg, our guides and professional colleagues Jonathan Marsden and Ian Kennaway soon realised, as we did, that our approaches were based on similar principles. The only real practical difference was that our British colleagues had been implementing procedures for many years that we were just getting ready to undertake after the Czech political changes. The inspiration we gained from the British at the time was reflected in a dramatic moral encouragement to take innovative steps when working with our own publically accessible monuments. New methods of presentation via comprehensive amounts of information (building furniture history personages) were particularly notable, as was the systematic preventive care of collection items. Europe Preserved for Europe Conference: A common professional vision, shared experiences, and inspiration. The first correspondence between South Bohemian conservators and their British colleagues took place immediately after the Velvet Revolution, in December of 1989. This resulted in two representatives of the esk Budjovice office of the National Heritage Institute being invited to the Europe Preserved for Europe international conference in York, organised in 1990 by the British National Trust. Kateina Cichrov and Marie Petrmanov, representing the Czech Republic, presented the challenge of caring for folk architecture in South Bohemia. The charm of Central European rustic gables received the anticipated response from the audience.

The National Trust (www.nationaltrust.org.uk)The National Trust is a non-profit, non-governmental organisation whose existence and operations depends on the ownership of heritage properties. It receives its support from member contributions, visitors to monuments and sponsors. It was formed in 1884 and confirmed as a professional and financially independent organisation by British Parliament in 1907. The primary objective of the National Trust is to protect and look after Great Britains extraordinarily valuable cultural and natural heritage, make it available to the public and preserve it for future generations. Teams of professionals work closely with townspeople on the regional and local level, as well as with its broad member base, which currently consists of over 4 million members.

The main strategic pillars of the National Trusts present work include: Building a sense of belonging Supporting the specific qualities of local life Bringing historic places to life Supporting historic locations as a place to relax and meet Supporting cooperation between professionals and volunteers and their joint creativity

During the first short stay in North Wales in the autumn of 1990, we provoked so much interest in our cultural heritage in our British colleagues that their reciprocal visit took place the very next year. The National Trust was represented by Jonathan Marsden, Ian Kennaway and Richard Neale. A week long visit to South Bohemia in June 1991 confirmed their admiration and warm relationship to our cultural monuments and natural wealth. During our visits to selected sites the topics that could be jointly addressed gradually began to emerge.

When I visited South Bohemia I was the Countryside Manager for West Snowdonia & Llyn, responsible for the day to day work of a team of Wardens, who looked after our countryside sites around the mountains of Snowdonia and the coast around the Llyn peninsula. Although the visit was to a totally different environment, I learnt a lot about different perceptions towards countryside conservation and how historic buildings relate to their surroundings. The high point was the visit to the Tebosko biosphere reserve (including a flight over it). It was interesting to see how there was awareness of the harmful effects of nutrient enrichment from nearby farms was having on the lakes. We also had a rare sighting of a beech marten in a tree and a huge colony of inland cormorants. The use of an efficient public transport system to travel around reminded me of the differences between the Czech Republic and the UK, where everyone has a car! I guess things have changed since then! I was also fascinated to find similarities between some Czech and Welsh words.

About 4 years after our visit I was promoted to Property Manager, then in 2008, I became the General Manager for Snowdonia and Llyn. In 2012, I took a 3-year secondment to be our Coastal Engagement Project Manager for Wales, which is what Im doing now.

Pi nvtv britskch koleg v echch v lt 1991 jsem se nesmle zeptala pana Iana Kennawaye, zda bych mohla vykonat studijn st v National Trustu. During a visit by one our British colleagues to Czechoslovakia in the summer of 1991, I timidly asked Ian Kennaway if I would be able to carry out a study fellowship at the National Trust. I was twenty-seven years old and had worked in conservation for five years, but until recently the communist regime had denied us the possibility to travel to Western Europe. For me, the idea of observing the work of my colleagues in North Wales had long been an unattainable dream. All the much happier I was when soon an official invitation arrived afterwards, and at the end of October I was stepping off the train at the station in Llandudno. The month-long study program that Jonathan Marsden and Ian Kennaway had prepared for me was very intense; it changed the way I looked at heritage care, literally in a revolutionary way. Over the next years I tried to apply the great deal of inspiration in my work in South Bohemia. To this day, I feel a great sense of gratitude to all my colleagues from the National Trust in Llandudno and to everyone who so generously devoted their time to me at all the properties I visited.

The ongoing practice of systematic care of collections in the UK is based on the age-old tradition of housekeeping, or the continuous maintenance of the furnishings of historic houses by personnel. The time-tested work procedures of cleaning, preservation and protection of the furnishings originally used by private owners were assumed by the professionals of the National Trust, professionally reviewed and developed further to meet the operational needs of historic houses containing collections available to the public. The application of this knowledge strongly emphasises a systematic work schedule in which the entire staff is involved with an awareness of essential personal responsibility. In the UK, specialists (curators, technologists, conservators) organise regular training sessions for teams right at the properties, at local, regional and national levels. These specialists have published an excellent aid entitled The National Trust Manual of Housekeeping which is accompanied by an instructional videotape.

South Bohemian conservators gladly took up the offer from their British colleagues to organise a joint seminar entitled Housekeeping - Preventive Care in the Czech Republic. The first training for the staff of Czech heritage properties took place in the spring of 1993 at Hlubok, with presentations by three British conservators from the National Trust, under the leadership of Helen Lloyd. This meeting became the basis for a new professional tradition in the Czech environment, and the very next year saw a follow-up, but this time national, seminar at esk Krumlov Castle. This seminar is still held regularly, in a modified format. The success and practical impact of the British instructional videotape led to the creation of a Czech equivalent in the late 1990s which is still used today.

Odborn debaty se tkaly pedevm preventivn pe, metodologie restaurovn, ale tak rozmanitch forem prezentace a propagace objekt.

During the first years after the fall of the Iron Curtain, most experiences were exchanged through per-sonal contact. The conservators from South Bohemia who had personally encountered British specialised practice noted a very strong positive shift in their own work and tried to spread their newly gained knowl-edge among their colleagues as quickly as possible. Naturally the most effective argument for introducing new methods into everyday work was the mediation of direct experiences to a wider working team.

Study excursions to Great Britain in 1993, 1994, 1996 and 1998 attracted a great deal of interest among South Bohemian conservators and appealed to specialists from the Czech National Heritage Institute as well as restorers, castle employees, museum administrators and municipal administration colleagues from South Bohemian towns and villages. For most of those involved, these excursions were their first visit to the British Isles after the borders between Western and Central Europe had opened. The first excursion was primarily focused on the counties of Kent and West Sussex. The second excursion in 1994 focused on historical buildings in Devon and Somerset. Certain visits worth particular mention include Bodiam Castle, Knole, Hastings, Brighton, Petworth, Chichester, Arundel, Winchester, Stonehenge, Salisbury, Chiddingstone, Chartwell, Ightam Mote, Leeds, and Cantebury, as well as Windsor, Hughenden Manor, West Wycombe Park, Cliveden and the landscape gardens at Stowe. The next excursion in 1996 was centred on Essex and Norfolk, and in 1998 the conservators were able to visit the most important locations of the first week of the Attingham Summer School.

Thanks to the arrangements made by Jonathan Marsden (and later his colleague Kevin Rogers) these experiences were all the more valuable to the Czech conservators in that they were accompanied by their English colleagues at the individual properties. They met property, depository and park managers, and had the opportunity to discuss issues in heritage preservation with them. These professional debates primarily concerned preventive care and restoration methodology, but also various forms of presenting and promoting buildings.

The Baroque Castle Theatre in esk Krumlov, considered to be one of the most completely preserved monuments of its kind in Europe, attracts the attention nowadays of professionals and tourists from all over the world. At the beginning of the 1990s, however, the situation was quite different. After decades of indifference, neglected maintenance, and irresponsible handling of its furnishings, the theatre building and its unique collection were in a very sorry state. Fortunately, the dismal condition of this rich array of properties did not discourage British heritage specialists during their initial visit in 1991.

It was in 1994 that Jonathan Marsden arranged for his South Bohemian associates to access funds from the EU grant program Kaleidoscope. Even though the Czech Republic still wasnt a member of the EU, the Czech project for the restoration of the theatre backdrops and production of replicas received the necessary support. Over CZK 750,000 was allotted for the complete restoration of all the theatre backdrops that made up the rear scenery. The fragility of the original decorations warranted their relocation into a newly built study depositary inside the Renaissance building, which is directly connected to the theatre. On the theatre stage itself, the originals were replaced with faithful and fully functional replicas, also funded by the EU program. Replicas of the backdrops were created in the studios of the National Theatre in Prague, using the original technique of tempera painting on canvas. The original backdrops were restored by N. Makov, M. Kek and P. Padevt. The experience gained by the Czech restorers was later put to use in the rehabilitation of the decorations of a historic theatre in Britains Richmond.

When developing the concept of a new depository for the theatre collections, the experience gained by Kateina Cichrov during a 1993 internship, funded by the British Council, proved invaluable. The furnishings of the depositories and the methods of costume presentation in the Victoria & Albert Museum and the Museum of London, as well as a visit to the restoration workshops of the British Royal Collection and the National Trust, provided a great deal of practical inspiration for equipping the theatre depository in esk Krumlov.

Personal meetings with British textile restorers accelerated the introduction of new reversible restoration procedures especially sandwich support into the Czech restoration environment. The years 1997-1998 witnessed Czech and British textile restoration practice merge into a working alliance in the rehabilitation of several costumes from the wardrobe of the Baroque Theatre in esk Krumlov. In honour of the prematurely deceased restorer of Czech origin Kvta Gidney, her British fellows organised a collection, the proceeds of which were used to restore selected costumes under the methodological supervision of K. Cichrov and H. Lloyd. The restoration team consisted of the Czech specialists D. Dokov, A. Grendysov, J. Hartlov, R. Kalabisov, V. Lipsk, and D. Hodkov.

I attended the 53rd year of the Attingham Summer School from 220 July, 2004. The directors of the Summer School were Annabel Westman and Lisa White, and Kate Morgan was the administrator for the Attingham Trust. The course program, focussed on the English Country House, was packed with lectures and tours of buildings every day from morning to late evening. It is indeed exhaustive to attend such a course, but still very inspiring. At the end of the course, I had to bow in spirit before the high level of expertise, knowledge of specific historic houses and the history of their owners, and the superior erudition and sensitive care with which our English colleagues and individual country house owners approached the protection of each of the 36 houses visited.

The Attingham Trust is a non-profit educational organisation that offers specialised courses of study for professionals focused on the study, preservation, and presentation of country houses and their collections (www.attinghamtrust.org). The first Attingham Summer School was organised in 1952 for American museum curators who were given the opportunity to study historic furnishings in their authentic environment. The School was founded by Helen Lowenthal and Sir George Trevelyan, the warden of the Attingham Park house. The school was named after the great neoclassical house in Shropshire where the Summer School was first held. The great success of the first course began an annual tradition of summer schools, open to participants from Europe and overseas.

Completion of the courses is seen as an important qualifying bonus in many European and overseas countries. The courses provide a unique opportunity to study a rich selection of British aristocratic houses from diverse viewpoints. In addition to learning about architecture, collecting, and gardens in situ, the courses also open up possibilities for discussion on the variable ways of presenting and interpreting them under different forms of ownership. Some items and collections are only made available to the Attingham School for study purposes. The courses are a unique place to establish professional and interdisciplinary contacts; they provide a venue for professional discussions and they also serve to initiate future international projects (more at www.attinghamtrust.org).

At the initiative of Jonathan Marsden, the regular staff at the Czech National Heritage Institute have attended the Attingham Summer School and other courses since 1997.

/ one of the first major installation projects in the castles of South Bohemia after 1989 was the rehabilitation of a part of the private Schwarzenberg suites on the first floor of the main castle building of Tebo Castle. The work took place in 1996-1997, with the goal of returning the interiors to their state at the end of the 19th and early 20th century. In previous decades, these spaces had been used as the depository for the State Regional Archives in Tebo. Given the lack of iconographic material, the most important guideline for the appearance of the rehabilitated interiors were the results of a restoration survey of the wall treatments, as well as several inventories from the first third of the 20th century. The print and picture collections were very clearly identified, as were small personal and decorative objects. The interiors, which include the suites of Princess Ida and Prince Adolf Joseph, and their descendants, emphasize detail to highlight the personal preferences of their residents.

/ Despite the various (and sometimes even bizarre) adaptations that the original private areas of Hlubok Castle underwent during the socialist regime, all the movable furniture of this former Schwarzenberg residence remained preserved. The gradual rehabilitation of the interior made use of the existing authentic furniture as well as many period photographs and carefully managed inventory books. Two rehabilitated areas deserve special emphasis the extensive complex of castle kitchens and the suites of the last princely couple, Dr. Adolf Schwarzenberg and his wife Hilda.

V letech 20052010 bylo ve druhm pate hradu Romberk postupn rehabilitovno letn apartm Jiho II. Buquoye (18141882). / From 2005 to 2010, the summer suites of Georg II of Buquoy (1814-1882) on the second floor of the Romberk Castle were gradually rehabilitated. The installation of the dining room, drawing room, billiard room, and study were carried out based on a study of historical inventories in combination with the results of restoration surveys of pre-served furniture and the wall treatment. The rooms had been used for technical facilities for decades, and in 2010 they were made available to the public in their original form.

V letech 20112013 byla dokonena reinstalace prvnho patra zmku daice. / In 2011-2013, reinstallation of the first floor at Daice was completed. The previous displays here had been put in place in the 1950s and were based on the presentation of stylistically pure interiors of NeoClassical and Biedermeier styles, thus disregarding the history of the building and its original inhabitants. The new installation rehabilitated the most authentic historic appearance, as it would have appeared at the end of the 19th and the first half of the 20th century, during which three generations of the Dalberg family lived at the house. During restoration research on the walls, it turned out that beneath later textile wall coverings and layers of paint were very well preserved historic wallpapers from the last third of the 19th century. The historical appearance of the interior was rehabilitated using historical inventories and photographs from 1908 and 1940.

Until the middlwhat means aweaving the damaged sections back together with a needle. This reconstructive method is aesthetically attractive (and very expensive), but it has a fundamental problem: this method of restoration work is nearly irreversible, since it encroaches very aggressively into the authentic material of the artifact. Moreover, this method of reweaving cannot be applied to tapestries that are damaged over their entire surface or whose weaving has been very weakened due to technical difficulties.

From 20002002, a group of Czech specialists Kateina Cichrov (NP), Radka Kalabisov and Vladimra Lipsk (private restorers) did comparative research in foreign workshops where different, much more sensitive, yet aesthetically acceptable methods in tapestry restoration have long been in practice. One of the most important partners in the project were the textile restoration workshops in the UK (TCC Winchester, TCS Hampton Court, TCC Blickling Hall) that provided a vast amount of valuable technological and methodological experience in sensitive restoration using method of stitching, based on attaching the entire damaged tapestry onto a support cloth by stitching between the original yarn.

These joint collaborative restoration projects brought about a fundamental change in the way that tapestries are rescued in Czech collections. The Method of stitching improved in the Czech conservation practice by reversible reconstructions by the help of so called little loom was presented at the international conference in Winchester in 2003.

Recent decades have shown an increasingly apparent need to help the public form a relationship to cultural heritage, in particular to their local properties. In many cases, the public can play a role as an important partner to professional institutions. Making the value of cultural heritage known to the wider spectrum of the general public particularly children and young people is a demanding task, requiring not only a high level of expertise, but also a talent for teaching and communicating.

The cultural heritage of the British Isles as an engaging living textbookGreat Britain is a country with a long tradition of educational programs for both movable and immovable properties, focusing on different age groups and various target groups. Individual cultural monuments offer a myriad of interactive learning projects that are often linked to the school curriculum. The British National Trust began to develop these types of educational programs in the late 1970s. Historic buildings gradually became the setting for more entertaining forms of education, not only teaching history and art, but also literature, science, geography, mathematics and physics.

Educational activities and the cultural heritage of South BohemiaIts no surprise that these activities were noticed by South Bohemian heritage specialists during their first visits to the UK in the early nineties. As early as 1991, Czech specialists were bringing a comprehensive set of worksheets and other auxiliary materials from North Wales these were to serve as the inspiration for the first efforts with educational projects at Kratochvle and Tebo.

The publication Opening Doors, edited in 2004 by Giles Waterfield (published by the Attingham Trust) provided a rich source of ideas for developing didactic programs. The methodology describes British educational projects for various types of monuments with differing proprietary relationships, as well as providing a critical analysis.

Since 2005, a team of the esk Budjovice National Heritage Institute has been working on the systematic preparation of interactive educational programs for different types of cultural heritage properties as part of the professional assignment The research of methods of presentation and transmitting cultural values of the monument fund to the public as an instrument of identification of society with cultural heritage. The main objective is to create a set of pilot educational programs that are practically tested for a typologically diverse area of the cultural heritage within the South Bohemian Region (e.g. castle gardens and parks, religious monuments, city buildings, forgotten crafts, and historical textiles).

erven Dvr, the former summer residence of the Schwarzenbergs, has been used as a psychiatric hospital from the 1960s. This charming property, situated in a large landscape park, has been struggling with funding for specialised restoration work for many years. The current owner, the Czech Ministry of Health, has of course different investment priorities directly associated with therapeutic use.

Since 2003, the esk Budjovice branch of the National Heritage Institute has been working closely with the erven Dvr Psychiatric Hospital by trying to link their theraputic care with the maintenance of the house and park and making it accessible to the public. The quality of this endangered property, together with this non-traditional approach, captured the attention of our British colleagues so much that they organised repeated sponsorship.

Financial support from the Headley Trust Thanks to a recommendation by Ian Kennaway, more than a million crowns were received in 2005 from the British charity Headley Trust for the restoration of two of the state rooms in the house. The rooms are used daily for therapeutic purposes and are opened to the public a few times a year.

In 2008, the Headley Trust secured another grant in excess of a million crowns for erven Dvr. This time, the funds donated were used for the rehabilitation of the former Pheasantry, for which a protected caf is planned for the future which will include an exhibition on the history of the building. The restoration included the windows and doors, cast iron decorations on the roof, and the wall paintings in the interior.

For his immense interest in the property and extraordinary assistance, Ian Kennaway was named Friend of erven Dvr. This honorary title was awarded by the Hospital on the occasion of one of regular meetings for former patients.

Our intensive cooperation with friends from the UK dates back to 2004; since then its been what I consider a real partnership. They are all nice and enthusiastic, and the contact with them gives us plenty of inspiration for further work. They helped us a great deal in securing the funds that, as a health care facility, we would have had a difficult time finding. And theyve been bringing their personal energy to us over the last three years in the summer, infecting us with that energy. They have set off a chain of events that will likely end with the restoration of the Mauricovna and a blossoming chateau parterre. For all this, I would like to thank the Friends of Czech Heritage very much.

The members of this small group include a concentration of British admirers of the Czech structural heritage, usually specialists in their fields architects, historian, land-scapers, and lawyers. The first project to receive financial support was the restoration of the painted interior of the garden arbour in the garden at esk Krumlov Castle, painted by F. J. Proky in 1752.

K vytvoen skromnho fondu, kter by podpoil zdej restaurtorsk projekty, mne spolen s Ianem Kennawayem a dalmi pteli inspirovala jejich podnikavost a odhodlan snaha o rehabilitaci kod zpsobench v minulosti.

I have led numerous groups on architectural tours to see buildings in Britain and abroad, but nothing prepared me for the astonishing variety, quality and sheer number of houses that I was to discover in the Czech lands in the years following the Velvet Revolution of 1989. The Czech Republic is a small country, with limited funds, but I met many curators and owners who were immensely enthusiastic about their properties. Their enterprise and determination to restore the damage of the past inspired me, together with Ian Kennaway and other colleagues, to set up The Friends of Czech Historic Buildings, Gardens and Parks, to help in some small way to fund restoration projects for the country. For three seasons in a row volunteers have travelled from the uK to work at erven Dvr, which currently serves as a psychiatric hospital. In cooperation with the National Heritage Institute and the hospitals leadership, the volunteers endeavour to beautify a selected area of the house's landscape park. The work is done in accordance with the therapeutic needs of the hospital.

The British volunteers are organized by the NGo Friends of Czech Heritage as part of a longer term project for the rehabilitation of the garden. The project enjoys the active participation of both British and Czech specialists.

The years 2011-2012 saw the joint preparation of a project for the renovation of the Mauricovna, originally the head gardeners house (authors: Peter Jamieson, estmr Luhan). The volunteers work was important for the preparatory work needed before construction began.

In a two-week work cycle in 2013, volunteers worked to renovate part of a disappeared garden parterre, which will afterwards be maintained by the hospital. At the same time, construction was carried out on the reconstruction of the roof of the Mauricovna, funded by donations from the Friends of Czech Heritage. In each group there were seven people of all ages. In addition to the two architects, the group also included other volunteers from very diverse professions (from a retired teacher to an Olympic equestrian).

They were all drawn to the Czech Republic because of its architectural unique heritage, which they wanted to become more familiar with. At the same time, they all wanted to contribute actively to the rehabilitation of the common European cultural heritage.
