  • Conference Theme Democracy & the University

in the 21st Century: Assessing The Path Forward

At this critical moment in world history, as crises of grave proportion challenge us across the globe, the promise of democracy stirs in the hearts of human beings who hope to translate their desire for full democratic participation into the social processes of their nations. This conference brings us together to discuss the universitys role and responsibility in promoting democracy, keeping it vital and educating an enlightened electorate, as key to preserving decency and freedom worldwide. As we celebrate AUDEM's 25-year commitment to promoting democracy through the university, let us hear your prospective and retrospective thoughts. How far have we come? What is the path forward?

The Alliance of Universities for Democracy (AUDEM) has since its founding been committed to defining a n d p ro m o ti n g democratic interaction and engagement.

An AUDEM conference is democracy at its best, the gathering of democratically minded individuals seeking reasoned understanding of the pressing concerns of the contemporary world through collaborative exchange of ideas and expertise.

The Alliance of Universities for Democracy cordially invites you to join with us in our important endeavors. We are honored to hold our 25th Annual Conference in the city of Skopje, the capital of the Republic of Macedonia on the Vardar River. We will gather there from

    October 19 to October 21, 2014

How appropriate it is that we meet in Macedonia! The Republic of Macedonia is located in the central Balkan peninsula in Southeast Europe. Its rich, complex history can be best understood by the fact that this landlocked country is bordered by Kosovo, Serbia, Bulgaria, Greece and Albania. This beautiful country is geographically defined by a central valley formed by the Vardar River and framed along its borders by scenic mountain ranges. It is a country rich in lakes, rivers, and ponds. Its three large lakes are surrounded by jutting mountain ranges. Its rivers flow into the Aegean, the Adriatic and Black Sea basins.

  • The City of Skopje has been inhabited since at least 4000 B.C. Remains of Neolithic settlements have been found within the old Kale Fortress that overlooks the modern city centre. Alexander the Great (Alexander III Macedon) who created one of the largest empires of the ancient world was born in Pelia, Macedonia in 356 B.C. He is said to have studied philosophy with Aristotle until the age of 16. Alexander is the country's revered native son.

On the eve of the 1st century AD, the settlement of Skopje was seized by the Romans and became a military camp. When the Roman Empire was divided into eastern and western halves in 395 AD, Scupi came under Byzantine rule from Constantinople. During much of its medieval period, the town's identity was contested. In 1392 it was conquered by the Turks and came under Ottoman rule for more than 500 years. During its history it has been claimed by many of its neighbors.

Macedonia gained its independence from the former Yugoslavia in 1991. The country is a member of the UN and the Council of Europe. It is currently a candidate for European Union membership.

These h i s t o r i c a l developments underscore the need for educators and scholars to come together to discuss the role, responsibility and mission of universities in promoting the development of democratic citizenship and democratic values in the 21st century.

Our conference offers an historic opportunity to contemplate the role of the university in democrat i c s oc ia l , po l i t i ca l , economic transformation.

  • The architecture of Skopje has undergone a remarkable transformation into a monumental city drawing inspiration from classical antiquity. The government funded project 'Skopje 2014' has resulted in major building projects including statues, bridges, museums, concert halls, theatres, hotels and administrative offices.

Founded in 1990, the Alliance of Universities for Democracy (AUDEM) is a consortium of American and European universities united for the common purpose of supporting institutions of higher learning in their democratic development. Currently, AUDEMs members number over 50 institutions of higher learning. For more information about the Alliance, please visit our website at www.audem.org .

    D e m o c r a c y & t h e U n i v e r s i t y in the 21st Century:

Assessing T h e P a t h F o r w a r d The Board of the Alliance of Universities for Democracy has selected the theme Democracy & the University in the 21st Century: Assessing The Path Forward for this years conference celebrating our 25th anniversary.

We believe that this theme provides academics the opportunity to contribute to the international discussion of the events that are unfolding worldwide. It is essential that we address the issue of the role of the university in promoting and defining democratic values and engagement in this unprecedented period of political and social upheaval.

We believe that the university is the flagship of a society. It has the power and responsibility to lead with ideas and activities that promote the fullest development of the human being.

To that end we are calling people together who wish to collaboratively build an international network of scholars, educators, humanitarian organizations, government officials and politicians to develop a democratic agenda for universities for the 21st century. Our desire is to learn from the successes of programs and from theorists from many disciplines about their efforts to create an engaged university.

Below we suggest an array of session topics, many of which reflect the continuing focus of AUDEM members.
