1 Καµπύλες στο επίπεδο και στον χώρο Σε αυτό το κεφάλαιο θα διατυπώσουµε µαθηµατικά, µε δύο τρόπους, τη διαισθητική έν- νοια της καµπύλης. Όπως θα διαπιστώσουµε, η ακριβής σχέση µεταξύ των δύο µορφών καµπύλης που θα παρουσιάσουµε είναι πολύ λεπτή, γι’ αυτό θα ξεκινήσουµε παραθέτον- τας µερικά παραδείγµατα καµπυλών από την κάθε µορφή καθώς και πρακτικούς τρόπους για να µεταβαίνουµε από τη µία µορφή καµπύλης στην άλλη. 1.1 Τι είναι καµπύλη; Εάν µας ζητηθεί να δώσουµε ένα παράδειγµα καµπύλης, µπορούµε να σκεφτούµε µια ευθεία, έστω την y 2x D 1 (αν και αυτή δεν είναι «καµπυλωµένη»!), έναν κύκλο, έστω τον x 2 C y 2 D 1, ή ίσως µια παραβολή, έστω την y x 2 D 0: y 2x =1 y x 2 =0 x 2 + y 2 =1 Σχήµα 1.1.
