Army, signed in Reims on 8 May 1945.

    > Battle of Stonne historicalcircuit

Stonne and its surrounding area were one of thecentre points of the resistance that the French Armyput up to the Wehrmacht in May and June 1940:after having changed hands seven times in 4 days, the village was completely destroyed. A memorialset in the centre of the village commemorates theevent, with an orientation table and a B1 heavytank. Leaving from the memorial, a well markedout historical trail of some 50 km, dotted withexplanatory panels in 4 languages links the varioussites of the battle in around 15 different stages, including the Observatory of the Pain de Sucre, the Grandes Armoises and the Mont-Dieu Forest.

      > More info

In the nearby village of Grandes Armoises, a 6 km hiking trail runsthrough the Mont-Dieu Forest. In some places, signs have been set upto recount the highlights of 1940: command post, the point where aStuka aircraft fell to the ground, regimental inrmary, ravine of death, etc.

On a site which saw erce ghting from May toJune 1940, the family estate of the Moulin deWaroux (18th-century) has since 1991 displayed the

major collection brought together by its passionatefounder, Christian Dupont-Fromageot. Here you willbe able to discover around one hundred weapons, uniforms, helmets, vehicles and other objects thatconjure up images of the daily life of French andGerman soldiers not only from 1940, but also fromthe First World War. This is a veritable treasurechest of war booty that has been built up in over30 years of passionate collection. A «Kubelwagen»German jeep and a Stoewer type 40 Commandcar, currently being restored, will soon be addedto the museum’s collection.

of the Cross of Lorraine, is the nal touch to thememorial trail which also includes the family’shouse - La Boisserie - and the General’s tomb. The Memorial is much more than the traditionalpresentation of the man of 18 June or the rstpresident of the Fifth Republic. It is more arendezvous with 20th-century history as a wholeand a tête-à-tête with the private man. Theattachment that Charles de Gaulle felt for Haute-Marne and its landscapes is shown here from avery original angle.
