Fall and Resurrection tries to encompass, in

brief glimpses, the events which have takenplace since the beginning of time, and beforetime. The work begins in total silence, in theParadise of God. After the silence of thebeginning a series of very hushed, deep notesspirals into a quiet but very complexuncreated chaos, in which all the potentials ofgood and evil are heard, and over a period ofabout five minutes the music travelsferociously, dissonantly and ever more loudlyinto a colossal storm. As I said, all thepossibilities of good and evil are present inthis uncreated chaos, therefore every singlenote carries with it a metaphysical significancealthough, because of the huge proliferation ofthe notes, this cannot be heard by the humanear. In fact, all the material of the piece (whichis based on the Byzantine chant S o m R s a t q o mr o t Thy Cross we adore) is contained in thisunrelenting sound.Out of this chaos, God loved the world intobeing; a paradise, a monody, withoutconfusion. Adam and Eve sing openly,primordially, to God and to each other. Thencomes the cosmic catastrophe, as the ramshorn sounds from on high. After this, fear,shame, sorrow and death enter as the first

section closes (Paradise lost). Pa

The BBC Singers are a unique grmusicians who have been at the fBritish musical life since the choir

So, in one sense, Fall and Resurrection is akind of musical metaphysics, but it came tome as a vision. In either case, I hope that itcontains a message of hope for the nextmillennium. The beauty and love with whichthe Holy Spirit quickens the celestial image-archetypes are identical to the beauty and love

with which He quickens their createdcounterparts. And just as it is Divine beautythat sets in mot ion the movement wherebyGod reveals His potentiality in manifest forms,so it is the same beauty which rouses increated beings the aspiration for higherexistence that is latent in all of us.

This work should ideally be performed in abuilding with a large acoustic. The resonanceof beautiful ancient instruments the kaval,the rams-horn and the tibetan temple bowls brings to mind and soul something primordial,

something lost, something innocent,something wild and untamed.

Fall and Resurrection is dedicated to HRHThe Prince of Wales, and it is written in lovingmemory of my father.
