5. Mention 5 other endangered animals in Indonesia!

Animal are almost extinct if their numbers are getting smaller, it means more animals die and become rare. One of them is rhinoceros. A rhinoceros is a large, heavy mammal with a thick skin. The word rhinoceros is derived from Greek words. Rhinoceros means nose and ceros means horn. Some rhinoceroses have two horns and others have one horn. These horns are not part of the bony structure of the head. They don’t have any bony core. They are an outgrowth of the skin.

Rhinoceroses are herbivorous. They eat grass and other plants. They live in grassy area or in jungles. Rhinoceroses spent most of their time in water. They usually live alone, except during the breeding season.

One of these rare rhinoceroses is the Java rhinoceroses. The java rhinoceroses, rhinoceros’s sondaicus, are comparatively small and slender. It’s about 1.7 meters high. Males have a single horn up to 10 inches (25 cm) in length. Females are usually hornless.

Formerly the java rhinoceroses lived in Myanmar, Indochina, the Malay Peninsula, java and Sumatra. It’s now relatively scarce. People hunted them for their horns. We only find them in Ujung Kulon, West Java.

If we don’t want Java Rhinoceroses to be extinct, we must protect them. We must preserve their habitat. The law prohibits those who hunt them.

In this sections students are going to learn:

Students are going to read a descriptive text .

Article/possessive pronoun + adjective + noun

A noun phrase is a phrase which head is a noun or a pronoun, optimally accompanied by a set of modifiers.

Possible modifiers for a noun phrase are:

Determiner : articles (the, a) demonstratives (this, that), numerals (three, four, five), possessives (my, his, her) and quantifiers (some, many)

Adjectives (black, big, expensive, cheap)

Complements (the students of physics, the claim that the east rise from the east)

There are two kind of modifiers: pre-modifier is placed before the noun and usually either as noun (the junior high school students) or adjective ( a clever student), or post modifiers if placed after noun. A post modifier may be either a prepositional phrase (the man with a sharp nose) or a relative clause (the house where I live).

The difference between modifiers and complements is that complements complete the meaning of the noun. Complements are necessary, whereas modifiers are optional information about noun

Indefinite pronouns refer to people or things generally than specifically. They are used when the speaker or writer doesn’t know or doesn’t have to say exactly who or what is referred to.

Examples:

Something is missing

Neither was brave enough to tell the truth.

When the object of a verb becomes the subject of a sentence, we are using passive verb.

Example; The plant digested the fly

The flay was digested by the plant

Both of them have similarity in meaning. For the first sentence you will notice that the subject is the plant is also doing the action digest to the object the fly. This is called an active verb. But for the second sentence the subject is the fly is now both the object of the action and the subject. This is called a passive verb.

Rafflesia Arnoldi

Rafflesia Arnoldii is a rare flower that is well known because of the size of the flower's petals and the smell of rotten meat that it gives out.

This enormous and rare flower grows in the forest of Southeast Asia, including the Philippines. Its large flower can grow to 3 meters in diameter and weigh up to 11 kilograms. It does not have any leaves, stem, or roots and because of lacking chlorophyll this plant cannot photosynthesize making it a parasite, living on other plants nutrition. The flower has five petals red in color and has white spots, which surrounds the middle of the flower much like a hole. At the base of the flower there is a part which has needles and contains the reproduction parts of the flower.

Rafflesia Arnoldii reproduces with the help of flies that are attracted to the flowers smell (which some observers say smells much like bad meat and rotten eggs mixed). The flower only lasts for five to seven days and then dies.

Nepenthes or Pitcher Plants as some people refers to are actually plants that survive on living insect or small animal. It’s quite intriguing and profound that this carnivore plant exists and feed on other insect or small animal just to survive. I can't believe it with my own eyes and yet Nepenthes are the tropical pitcher plants of the Old World. It's the only genus of the Nepenthacea family.

The name Nepenthes is Old Greek word and it means "soothing grief"  By the way , this plant can also be planted or put in your garden/back yard.

Questions

1. What is the best title for the text above?2. How does a Pitcher Plants eat?

3. Does it include in the carnivore?
