SI Base Unit
What is matter?
Anything that occupies space and has mass.
Classification of matter
Solid rigid objects with definite shapes.
Liquid less rigid than solid and are fluid, able to flow & assume the shape of their containers.
Gas are fluids but unlike liquids, they can expand indefinately.
Symbols

Element Symbol Latin name
Sodium Na Natrium
Iron Fe Ferrum
Copper Cu Cuprum
Gold Au Aurum
Silver Ag Argentum
Definition:
Atom
- the smallest particle of an elements that retains the chemical nature of element.
Molecule
- a structure consisting of 2 or more atoms that are chemically bound together and behave as an independent unit.
11
Substance matter that has a definite or constant composition and distinct properties.
Ex:
Water
Silver
Ethanol
12
Mixture a combination of two or more substances and the substances retain their distinct identities.
Ex:
Air
Soft drink
Milk
Cement
13
Mixture
Homogeneous
Composition of the mixture, is the same throughout the solution.
Ex: a spoonful of sugar dissolves in water.
Heterogeneous
Composition is not uniform.
Ex: sand is mixed with iron filing.
14
Elements -substances that cannot be decomposed into simpler
materials by chem. reaction (1 type of atom). -Eg: Sodium, Chlorine, Hydrogen, Oxygen, etc. Compounds -contains 2 or more elements in chem. combination,
it exhibits diff. prop. from its component elements. -Eg: water (hydrolysis)
15
16
Ion?
An atom or a group of atoms that has a net +ve or ve charge.
17
Cation an ion with a net +ve charge.
18
Anion an ion whose net charge ve charge
19
20
