Transexpériences

September 24th - December 24th 2005

Page 7: Chen Zhen

When I am doing my artistic projects “the concept sows” and “the hands reap”. I think that I am still very much a peasant at heart in that it is always my hands that reassure me about the quality of the harvest. I like the traces left on the hand. A good craftsman is someone who does things naturally, using the hands, the eyes and the heart (in China strength and wisdom are located in the region of the heart). I believe in the intelligence of the hand and, above all, in the power of the “pendulum move-ment”, of the equilibrium between hand and knowledge. If my thought inhabits the “shadows”, then my hands are their “light”. My hands are the better half of my work, of my brain, of my life.

Chen Zhen

Chen Zhen (Shanghai 1955 - Parigi 2000) is one of the protagonists of our times, whose work is a fine example of pluralism in art and the core of which is encapsulated in the notion of “transexpériences”. Constantly traversing boundaries, he operated in an area between Eastern and Western thought, privi-leging synergy rather than clear-cut choice and rigid classification.

Chen Zhen’s art deals with many issues, ranging from international politics to the life of the indi-vidual.

The spirit shaping these works is rooted in ancient Taoist philosophy and he explored the path of Bud-dhist spirituality without, however, ignoring the scientific and rational culture of the Western world. A key concern in his work was also an investigation of the difference between the Eastern and the Western approach to medicine; this emerges in a number of works dealing with the care and treatment of the human body, where the body is viewed as an interior landscape, as an organism that works if its various elements interrelate harmoniously.

Featuring about twenty works produced between 1990 and 2000, the exhibition will touch on all the themes mentioned above.
