EditorialChosen

by Joni Owens

I confess, fishing is not one of my favorite pastimes. In fact, I will likely do all I can to get out of going fishing, unless of course it involves my

grandchildren. Then I will be the photographer, and not the one putting the worm on the hook or taking the fish off the hook. No, the only time I like fishing is when it is used for décor, as we are doing this quarter.

Fishing can be an occupation or a sport. Either way, it is something one chooses to do (or not, as in my case). The fisherman carefully chooses his pole, bait, and tackle. Then he chooses his favorite fishing hole, be it creek, lake, or ocean. He chooses to sit lazily on the creek bank or quietly in a johnboat, or fight like crazy to land that swordfish from the deck of a yacht. Then he chooses whether to keep the fish or toss them back. If they are keepers, he chooses how to cook them or mount them.

You may think this quarter is about being fishers of men. Instead, it is about choosing, or more specifically, about God choosing. God chose some

very ordinary men to do great work for Him. Some were chosen as teenagers, one was chosen before his birth, one was a former slave, and others were princes or prophets. Yet God saw the potential when He chose people like Joseph, Joshua, David, and Daniel. Today we look on them as great leaders because we know the whole story, but it was not always so with these men.

Today God is still choosing. He chose you to teach His children. He chose your pastor, worship leader, and other leaders of the church. And He is choosing your students. One may be a missionary, another a songwriter, another a pianist, and another a teacher. Still others will be givers and workers without being leaders. While we may choose to “write off” a child as impossible material, God sees so much more.

Aren’t you glad He does?

Gone Fishin’Fishing is generally considered either a sport or a necessity. While many look on it as a sport, they also eat what they catch. Those who fish for a living or for provision for their family have mastered the technique in order to get more for their time and effort. It is probably safe to say it is a love/hate activity—you either love it or hate it. (Personally, this editor does not enjoy fishing. Worms! Slimy fish! The smell! Ewww!)

However, fishing is also a popular classroom décor theme. (I can handle this kind of fishing.) Using everything from construction paper to bubble wrap, paper plates to paper lanterns, and of course the always-loved goldfish crackers, this theme will be one of your most fun options to date.

For starters, visit Pinterest.com and search “class décor fishing” and “fish craft” for décor and craft ideas. (How did we survive before Pinterest?) Check party and teacher supply stores and websites for ready-made fishing items. Toys, prizes, fishing nets in assorted colors, and crafts are available through OrientalTrading.com. And of course the resource packet offers décor items as well as transparency art for you to enlarge and reproduce as you wish.

Don’t forget to post pictures of your finished rooms on our Facebook page: Word Aflame Kindergarten Curriculum Teachers.

Gone Fishin’Mount the cute door poster (trp) so all passersby can see where your class is this quarter.

If you have a bulletin board outside your classroom that you can decorate, take close-up pictures of each child, print out, and attach each to a chenille-wire figure. Add a stick fishing pole with a string to the hand, and hang a small fish or worm from the end of the line. Mount cutout letters saying “Gone Fishin’” over the display.

Favorite Fishing HolesKeep in mind, this is not an under-the-sea theme. Instead, focus on favorite fishing holes: the creek, the wharf, and of course the pond where you fish from a johnboat. For backdrops, you will need lots of blue water (various shades), light blue skies, brown trees with green foliage, puffy polyfill clouds, and wood planks. Plastic tablecloths cover large areas quickly and inexpensively. Brown paper drop cloth rolls are sold at hardware stores, or Kraft paper (assorted colors and designs) can be found in rolls or by the yard at party and teacher supply stores.

Theme Development

Kid Fishing: Follow the “kid fishing” patterns (trp) to create different children fishing in the wall scenes described below. Be sure to use a variety of skin tones and clothing. Add stick fishing poles to each child’s hand, and position children sitting, standing, feet in the water, and so on. Mount the theme art pieces (trp) and use the transparency art (trp) to create your own pieces on colored craft paper.

The Creek: Cover the upper wall with light blue paper and add polyfill clouds. Use a different blue for the creek running along the bottom of the wall. Add a brown paper bank on the far edge of the creek. Cut out cattails and group along both edges of the creek. Green lily pads can float in the water. Water spiders and water bugs can race across the water, and dragonflies can hover over the water. Add frogs along the creek bank. Add a large shade tree or two. (Consider making these 3-D so they actually “shade” the creek.) Position a kid fishing under the tree with his fishing line in the water. Another kid can be sitting on the bank

with his feet in the water. Add some fish jumping out of the water (away from the fishermen, of course).

The Wharf: Continue the blue sky, with a large area below in a different blue representing water going off into the distance. Cut a large red or orange circle for the sun and position just above the water to show a sunset. Add boats out on the lake. Use brown paper to construct a large wharf. A teacher supply store may offer brown Kraft paper printed in a wood plank pattern. Position a pelican on a wharf post. Add fishing tackle boxes and a bucket of fish. Position some kids fishing on the wharf, standing or sitting. Add a standing crane and a couple seagulls flying overhead. Farther out in the lake, add some fish jumping out of the water.

Consider adding a “No Swimming” sign to one side of the lake.

The Johnboat: Again, continue the blue sky, with a different blue for the lake on the bottom half of the wall. Cut a large johnboat from colored paper. For a 3-D effect, add a real fishing net and pole on the boat. Position a couple kids fishing from the boat. Cut out a paper bucket and add some assorted paper fish cutouts to represent their catch.

The Bait Shop: A bait shop carries all the supplies a fisherman needs, including a fishing license, tackle, and food and water for the fisherman. Your teaching wall is your bait shop, where children can receive their fishing license (the Holy Ghost), tackle (real-life stories to help them

face their own life experiences), and food and water (Scriptures to see them through any situation). Cut out and mount the memory verse fish (trp) and special memory passage poster (trp) on this wall. Be sure your wall has a writing board (chalk or dry erase board). Set up a shelving area, such as a bookcase or inexpensive plastic storage shelf set, and add typical fishing items. Include a tackle box that will hold the attendance/memory charts (the wrappers from the activity paper sets). Store Bibles and Bible storybooks here. Place gummy worms in a

sealed glass jar and randomly distribute them as surprise treats. Keep a container of fish crackers available.

In another corner, store tree branch fishing poles, complete with string and magnet hooks, in a large bucket. Place a child’s swimming pool nearby and fill it with construction paper fish cutouts that have paper clip mouths. The fish cutouts may have review questions or numbers on them. The children will occasionally go fishing here for review games or to earn points.

FishAlthough in real life one would not see the colorful fish in the water, imagination allows us to include fish in our water areas. Create a variety of fun fish for each of the walls.

Construction Paper Fish: Use the theme art to create a variety of fish from construction paper. Add tissue paper fins and tails for more color.

Paper Plate Fish: Using colored paper plates, cut a large V for the mouth and add a wiggle eye. Use markers to add details and transform the plate to a clownfish or striped angelfish. Add construction paper or tissue paper fins and tail.

CD Fish: Add jewels to an old CD for a sparkly fish, complete with wiggle eye and paper fins and tail.

Scrapbook Fish: Cut fish shapes from colorful scrapbook paper, adding fins and tails from contrasting solid color papers.

Bulletin BoardsDecorating entire rooms makes a large impact. However, if you are limited to decorating bulletin boards, use any of the above ideas on a smaller scale.

Salvation DoorThroughout the quarter, discuss the plan of salvation with the students. Children as young as four years old have received the Holy Ghost. This is also the age to introduce salvation terms, such as sin, repent, forgive, baptize, and Holy Ghost. Mount the salvation poster (trp) to the inside of the door (assuming you close your door during session).

Bible PointsEvery week the children learn a short take-home phrase summarizing the lesson objectives. Say the Bible point frequently to help children lock this important life application into their hearts and minds. Hold up a fishing rod each time you want students to say the Bible point.

OfferingCollect the offering as soon as the children enter so they do not lose it or play with it. Use a child’s tackle box or a small goldfish bowl to receive the offering.

VolunteersCreate a fish cutout for each child. Write his name on it and place it in a fishing bucket. Each time you need a volunteer, draw a fish from the bucket, then throw it in another bucket. Once all the names are used, start drawing from the other bucket.

Attendance and Memory ChartsThe charts are combined on a landscape layout on the activity paper wrapper. Remove the staple and separate the papers for weekly distribution. On the first Sunday, give each child a page and let him write his name on the line. Each week the child attends, he colors a fish.

As he practices the unit memory verse each week, he colors one item from the verse’s boat: (1) the child fisherman, (2) pole, (3) bobber, (4) worm, and for unit 3, (5) the engine. When he can say the verse in its entirety, he colors the boat.

Activate your faith and buy extra copies to allow for growth. Use the master of each chart to make copies for visitors. Trim and tape the pages together on the back to make one spread like the purchased copies.

Bible VersesA unit Bible verse is studied each unit. The multi-week study will explain the verse as well as encourage memorization. Cut out each large fish and mount on the teaching wall, or put each in a water area. Each week, gather students at the appropriate poster to study the verse. An additional Bible lesson verse that connects to the Bible lesson is mentioned and is included in the activity paper.

The special memory passage is Joshua 1:9. Refer to the poster (trp), ideas , and the small version on the activity paper. Several of the optional activities include opportunities for teaching this important passage.

Kids in MissionsThe focus this quarter is North American Missions. Ideas and information are included on the KiM insert . Mount the map of North America (trp). Visit www.namupci.com and scroll over the Ministries tab to see the many ways this division is reaching North America. Ask your pastor or district office for a list of church planters in your district. Consider adopting a family, especially one that has kindergarten-age children. Let the children color pictures, make cards, and even prepare a gift box to send the family. Print the family’s picture and send it home with the children so they know to pray for the family each week.

Teacher Training Helps Our website offers several teacher training articles as well as other items to enhance your teaching experience: a child information form, childhood characteristics, how to build a tree, and how to make sock puppets. A standard supply list details items that should be regularly available.

MusicWorship is an important part of each lesson. Several children’s CDs are available at www.pentecostalpublishing.com, including Word Aflame’s Kids in Praise volumes 1 and 2. Many children’s worship CDs include today’s choruses that are popular in church and are usually sung by children. Let students help lead worship time by using inflatable mics and musical instruments.

FacebookJoin us on Facebook and share exciting news, ask questions, offer suggestions, and most importantly, post those room décor pics! Your pictures inspire others as well as offer options for turning rooms into WOW rooms. Search for Word Aflame Kindergarten Curriculum Teachers.

Note: Before posting pictures of children, be sure to get parental permission. The child information form on our teacher training link offers a place for their approval.

Fun Fish CraftsIf you have extra time in class, consider using these fun craft ideas. Visit Pinterest.com and search “fishing crafts” for more ideas.

Bubble Wrap Fish: Cut fish shapes from bubble wrap, then let children use watercolor paints to paint stripes over the bubbles (paint 3-4 rows of bubbles per stripe).

Tissue Paper Fish: Cut fish shapes from construction paper and let children glue on 1-inch squares of tissue paper to create scales.

Cupcake Wrapper Fish: Cut fish shapes from construction paper. Cut colored cupcake papers into thirds. Let the children add them to the fish, slightly overlapping to make scales. Use papers to make the fins and tails. Add wiggle-eyes.

Craft Stick Fish: Show children how to overlap colored craft sticks to form a fish. Add a wiggle eye.

Cardboard Tube Fish: Children add tissue paper strips for tails along the bottom edge of a cardboard tube. Then they cover the tube with circles or squares of tissue paper. Add large wiggle-eyes. Punch a hole at the top of the tube, tie a yarn strip to it, and then attach the other end of the yarn to a stick fishing pole.

Bible BackgroundThe Bible records many times where God used dreams and visions to speak to people. Some were intended only for the person dreaming, such as Jacob’s dream with the ladder, and some affected groups and nations, such as Joseph’s dreams. The symbols of Joseph’s dreams clearly showed that his family would one day bow to him.

Interpretations of Joseph’s “coat of many colors” include a coat with long sleeves, a long coat with stripes, an ornamental tunic, or a coat reaching to his feet. Scholars agree that it was intended to show favor and was generally indicative of nobility.

Teacher InsightIt is a fact of life—the children who need your love the most are the ones who are most unlovable. They are starved for love, and like hungry dogs, these children growl and snarl. It’s the only way they know how to get attention.

A baptism of Calvary’s love is necessary for you to love each student equally. That does not mean you will treat all alike, because each child is different. But your love cup will mete out the same dose of love to each child. This does not come naturally. It is a work of the Spirit and comes only through prayer—sometimes much prayer.

Welcome to the WordCollect their offering before letting students explore their new room. Each child fishes and receives a candy according to the number of his fish.

Distribute the attendance charts. After the children add their names, they color one fish. Store the charts in the tackle box.

As the children color, show the fishing rod and explain that each time you hold it up, they should say, “God wants to speak to me.” Ask students to name people who have spoken to them so far this morning.

Activity Ask the children to draw a picture showing what they want to be when they grow up. Explain how their plans for the future are “dreams,” sometimes called daydreams. Show the dream flashcard.

Allow each child to share his dream. Talk briefly about what he will have to do to make that dream come true.

WorshipSing “He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands.”
