Learnings/ Discoveries:

- In this first sketch up activity, I started exploring the sketch up basic tools. I learn how to use the Push/Pull button, which are very easy to control. This tool is also very amazing because it helps me easily develop a 3D structure, which would take a very long time to finish when done by hands. I also learn how to use the pan, zoom, and orbit button, which I was surprised to find out to be very helpful because it helps me easily go and locate the mistakes I wish to fix. Furthermore I learn how to use the Pencil, Rectangle, and Arc tool, which helps me easily make a recognizable doghouse structure. Lastly, I learn how to use the Move tool, which is a challenge for me because I just can’t seem to properly move my structure to the location I wanted it to be, the move tool seems to just move randomly around.

- In addition, In this week’s activity, I decided to be adventurous and take a risk. I decided to use tools that wasn’t discussed thoroughly yet in our class. Tools such as Paint and 3D Imports. By taking this risk, I learn some of my weaknesses and at the same time some of my strengths.

- Furthermore, I discover that the computer key board is very important in sketch up. Without it, we can’t use short-cut commands that can make our working progress more easier and faster.

- Lastly, I discover that despite our class’ goal to explore and be creative in using the basic tools in sketch-up; I still shouldn’t ignore and forget how to structure my model. Because as my professor states, I “need to know this issues sooner rather than later” to avoid difficulties and confusion in the future.

Strengths/ Comforts:- By exploring ahead, I was able to learn how to open and import 3D images in my structure. This help me figure out not to

import images that have large data size because it can freeze the system (unfortunately I learn this the hard way).- Also, I was able to explore some of the uses of the Large Tool Set; such as the Paint Bucket Tool. I really like this tool

because it gives texture and finishes to my model.- Lastly, because the basic tools was very easy to use, it made me explore my imagination without the worries of structure and

mechanics.

Weaknesses/ Problems:

- I have no structure- Also, I don’t have any transitions that can connect my stone house structure to my glass enclosed space

for food.- I also have a problem using the Move tool, for whenever I use it, without using the Left, Up, Down, Right

button, the structure or model I wanted too put in another location will just move all over the place.

Approach that works best for my Learnings:

- Whenever I started to get confused in how to use the basic tools I try to read the book because it give detail description in how to use the materials.

- I also experiment and explore to further understand the mechanics of the program

How I solved my Problems:

- To solve my problem with the move tool, I practice using the left, up, down, right button to have a much precise movement when moving my structure.

- As for my problem with having no structure, I’ll try to be a bit more conscious in the future whenever I make my design. I’ll try to remember what I learn in making structured model and apply it in my future iterations.

Learnings/Discoveries:

- This week is where we discover how we can use the Parallel Projection to precisely control placement of building blocks.- Also, this week is where we learn how to use the Tape Measure Tool, which I discover is a very useful tool because it can help us determine the

measurement of an existing structure or objects. It also acts as our guide line to precisely connect or make a straight line.- Furthermore, we learn how to put our structure in Components; which help us organize the elements we are adding in our design. Also, it prevent

our structure’s components to stick together, making it easy for us to edit our components without affecting the others.- Finally, this is where we learn the Follow-Me tool. This tool is very amazing. If just given an extrusion path to follow, the follow-me tool can create

some impressive geometry design, as we can see in the structure’s stair design.

Weaknesses/ Problems:

- In this activity, I have a hard time with the measurement tool. Despite it being a guide line marker if oriented in the wrong corner orientation the guideline will not show in the place I want it to be. For instance as shown in Photo 1 the guide look in the same place as the others, but if I rotate it, clearly it will show, as is shown in Photo 2. This creates complication for me because whenever I start tracing the line to close the rectangle, it won’t create a face.

Photo 1 Photo 2- Also, I have a problem with editing my components. I have a hard time with editing my components because sometimes I forget that the structure

is in a component so I begin to get frustrated whenever I can’t push/pull a shape that I want to integrate in my design, or if I can’t make a face when closing a line.

- Furthermore, I have a hard time with follow-me tool. Because whenever it touch an extrusion path that I don’t want it to follow, it just run off course.

Strengths/ Comforts:

- I started to think structurally whenever I make a design- I also begin to master importing 3D images in my structure- Furthermore, I don’t have any difficulties in making the two top semi-spherical domes. In fact, I’m beginning

to like integrating it to my structure because it brings complexity to my design.

How I solved my Problems:

- To solve my forgetfulness in double clicking the components in order to edit, I write down in my notebook the components I closed so that I can be reminded what objects or components I closed.

- Furthermore, to be familiar with the follow me tool I practice using the tool for 1-1 ½ hour to get accustomed to the tool.

Approach that works best for my Learnings:

• Practicing- to familiarize the tools• Taking Notes- to be reminded of what objects or structure that were made into components.

Learnings/Discoveries:

- In this week, I learn some shortcut commands that can help me produce a precise, well measured structure. I learn how we can just type in measurements in the key board and the sketch-up program will immediately follow the commands. For instance, if we want to have a 10’x10’x10’ cube we can just type in: 10’,10’ after dragging in the rectangle tool and the rectangle will be 10’x10’. Then to make the cube 10’ tall we just need to type in 10’ after we push/pull up the rectangle. I really enjoy this technique because not only is it easy, but it is also very helpful in our iterations to come.

- I also learn the short cut way of copying shapes and structure. I was amazed that we can use the move button to copy a replica of the original design; all we need to do is high light the shapes that we want to copy, click the ctrl + move tool, and we have a precise copy of what we want to replicate. Although this command isn’t very easy to do.

- This is also where we properly learn to import 3D images, and export 2D images that we can use as a money shot, an image we can incorporate in our learning portfolio.

- In addition, in this week, we learn how to activate and deactivate shadows.

Strengths/ Comforts:

- I have successfully applied the tools and operations introduced in class.

- I were also able to easily learn the shortcut command that help me produce a precise, well measured structure.

- I really like the Shadow tool because it makes my finished design more realistic.

Weaknesses/ Problems:

- I have a hard time with the copying technique using the ctrl + move tool. This method is very hard to master because we really need to precisely highlight the shapes and objects we want to copy; however, due to unknown reason, it is still unclear to me. I just can’t copy properly the shape I want duplicate. For instance, the semi circle- sphered window in the middle of my building, I did a series of explorations, experimentations, re-construction just to produce an almost similar replica of the very first window. So again, the copying method is really hard for me.

- This is also where I have a hard time with the move tool again. Because I often forget to use the arrow keys, in this activity, I have wasted a lot of time just to move my structure in the place where I want it to be.

- Furthermore, I also still have a problem with my money angle shot because I can’t seem able to capture a view that viewers would experience when approaching my design. I should angle my shots more at eye level rather than one from the air!

How I solved my Problems:

- As I said earlier, for the copying method, I did a lot of exploring, experimentations, and reconstructions just to figure out how I can copy the circular window properly.

- I patiently practice again how to move objects, often using the arrow key, to train my self not to forget pressing these command keys in the future.

- I practice taking shots more in eye level. I used the alignment of the 3D model’s in the horizon as my marker if I am looking at a perspective that are more eye-level.

Approach that works best for my Learnings:

- Practicing the tools and methods I am weak on.

Learnings/ Discoveries:

- In this iteration we started to learn how to use the Rotation tool, which is very useful if I want to rotate a particular component.- We also learn how to use Offset, which I discover is a very amazing tool because it can help me create a more complex design

by offsetting the dimensions of the shapes. For instance, as shown in Photo 1 we can offset any co-planar, lines, and arcs and manipulate it to get a repetitive complex design as shown in Photo 2 and 3.

Photo 1 Photo 2 Photo 3- Furthermore, in this week, we started learning how to Animate our design, and be more perceptive of our chosen angle to

showcase in the animation.- We also learn how to do Layering in this activity, which is very helpful because we can hide and unhide a components using this

tool.

Strengths/ Comforts:

- I was able to come up with a unique space-age looking stair design- I was also able to create a insightful animation scene that showcase my eye-catching work.- I was also able to use the offset tool to my advantage and was able to create a striking, structural supporting spine for the

staircase (as shown in Photo 3).

Weaknesses/ Problems:

- Despite my good design result with the offset tool, I still have a hard time using it. Sometimes when I release the offset tool early it will offset immediately and will not follow the measurement I input.

- Another weakness that I have, although it doesn’t concern the tools, is I love to import large size 3D images. This slow down my making and saving process.

How I solved my Problems:

- For the offset tool, I just try to be patient whenever I am using this tool. I also practice with it so that I could familiarize and understand how to properly use the apparatus.

- As for importing large file size 3D images. I try to venture away in using large size file. I begin using little size file to prevent slowing down my working and progress. Plus, I discover that I can customize the imported file to my liking without worrying of crashing my data file.

Approach that works best for my Learnings:

- Exploration of the methods I am having a hard time on - Practicing the tools that I am still unclear with- Start being Insightful with my design

Learnings/ Discoveries:

For this week, our class’ goal is to construct a structure out of tracing Malevich’s painting (Photo 1):

- In this activity, we learn how to use X-ray, which help us trace the painting easily because the x-ray tool make the image transparent. It looks like it is overlaid by a tracing paper, as we can see in the Photo 2. - Despite being used in earlier iterations, this is where I discover the usefulness of the Scale tool. I was amazed to find out that

the scale tool can be manipulated to produce a very complex design.- Furthermore, we explored the Constructivist Architecture in this activity. And, our goal is to incorporate our findings in this

iteration.

Strengths/ Comforts:

- Because of the Scale and move tool, I was able to create a complex repetitive design.- I also like to use the x-ray tool because it makes me see clearly the lines and planes I have put over in the image, making it

easier for me to spot it, and create a structure.- This is also where my past knowledge about parallel projection came to play. For, we need to observe the image in plan view so

that we can trace the picture easily.

Weaknesses/ Problems:

- My design didn’t resemble any constructivist architecture. It is because I didn’t explore the constructivist architecture properly, but just chose to develop my creativity further when I did this design.

- In this iteration, because I have fun illustrating my creativity I, again, forgot to include structure in my design. So when looking at my structure, there seems to be no supports that holds my curtain of glass together.

- I also don’t have any space for activity area. This week’s iteration just seems like a tunnel where people can go in and out of. For, the negative space inside is very few, and also very unrealistic.

How I solved my Problems:

- I still haven’t solved the problem because despite my mistakes I do find this structure to have a potential. In addition, I want to use this model as an inspiration in future designs, where I can render and develop it further.

- I also plan to increase my negative space in the next iteration so that I can have a space for activity other than creating a narrow tunnel.

- Lastly, I plan to explore more structured building so that I can apply it in my later designs.

Approach that works best for my Learnings:

* Exploration- do further research about structural buildings.

* Practice the tools I’m having a hard time with.

Learnings/ Discoveries:

- In this week’s activity, we further explore the previous tools we used to construct a new and more developed structure.- I also learn the importance of hiding and un-hiding a component in this activity.- This is also where I discover the beauty of using structural elements. Because looking at my recent design, I can see a

realistic, but multifaceted structure. I never knew that being structural can still brings complexity in a design (as illustrated in the Photos).

Strengths/ Comforts:

- My design certainly developed from my first attempt of creating a structure out of tracing Malevich’s composition.- I am starting to use Sketch Up to generate designs that are architectonic and with a developing level of hierarchical

complexity.- I am also starting to understand how to create a structural design. It must be the result of my several research of

structural architectural works.- This time I really tried to come up with a design that resembles Malevich’s composition. I also started incorporating the

architectonic language that I learned when exploring and observing some constructivist architecture.

Weaknesses/ Problems:

- My veranda’s support is very thin. It doesn’t seem like a supporting element but just a decorative structure.- I also believe I still need more practice in developing structural supports.

How I solved my Problems:

- I need more research and exploration- I need to find more inspiration. For, I notice that if I find inspiring work, I produce a much better design.

Approach that works best for my Learnings:

- Exploration- Inspiration- using the previous failed design, I have taken some inspiring design that I want to repeat in my

recent structure, but now it is more structured

Learnings/ Discoveries:

- In this week’s activity we learn how to fold using the rotate tool- Our goal for this week is to make a paper airplane and create a money shot that shows them as the significant element in

the image.- Furthermore, in this activity, I discover how I can use external images as a paint. This was a great discovery for me

because I now have a knowledge how to download other colors and textures that cannot be found in the basic paint tool colors and textures. For instance the magma in my image was a picture that I converted into a paint.

- This is also where we started to learn how to create terrain using the Sand Box tools.

Strengths/ Comforts:

- I was able to execute folding easily- I am also beginning to master using the move tool, which is the result of my constant practice.- I am also able to master the Paint Bucket tool. - In addition, I was able to depict a dramatic scene. - - I was also able to use my background image to enhance the dramatic feeling of the airplane wars.

Weaknesses/ Problems:

- I wasn’t able to put the spotlight into the paper airplane. When looking at my dramatic scene it seems like the Dragon and the Bird (not my work) monopolize the spotlight.

- I also have hard time creating the terrain because whenever I try to edit the terrain, the sketch up program begins to slow down. This confused me profusely.

- I also find out how to smoothen the terrain’s faces. I put this here in problems because as of now I still don’t have any idea how I did it.

How I solved my Problems:

- To solve my spotlight problem, I orient the camera in capturing my airplane design predominantly.- I also practiced creating terrain a lot to familiarize its mechanics.- Finally, I am still exploring and trying to figure out how I was able to smoothen my terrain.

Approach that works best for my Learnings:

* Exploration- do further research about structural buildings.

* Practice the mechanics I’m having a difficulty with.

Learnings/ Discoveries:

- In this week’s activity, our class learn how to intersect faces with model.- We also learn how we can make other geometry when intersecting faces with models (as illustrated in the Photo).

- Furthermore, we learn how to use the Drape and Stamp tool.

- This is also where we should incorporate our terrain with our constructed structure.

Strengths/ Comforts:

- I really like this activity of intersecting faces with model because I can do a lot of fun and complex geometric shapes using this method.

- I am also getting skillful with the rotation tool. I am beginning to like this tool because I discover that it can bring out the beauty of geometric designs if manipulated right. For instance, I was able to use the rotation tool to my advantage and was able to  torqued (twisted) the tower clazing in my structure.

- I was able to produce a dramatic site. And, the steep stair ascent also heightens the drama.

Weaknesses/ Problems:

- There are some issues with how I can structurally connect it at the top.- I also have a problem with the stamp tool. Because whenever I use the tool the sketch up program freeze up

wasting me a lot of valuable time.- Furthermore, I still haven’t solved how I smoothen my landscape in my earlier iterations. I really want to do it

again in this structure but unfortunately it is still needs further exploration.

How I solved my Problems:

- In order for me to figure out how to smoothen my terrain, I tried reading the book thoroughly to get a hint or an idea on how to do it. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to come across one

- I also tried looking in the internet, even watching some tutorial videos; however, some explanation they show is very confusing for me to comprehend. So, I will just continue exploring maybe I’ll stumble across a clue.

- For the stamp tool I just waited patiently for the system to unfreeze, which is very frustrating; however it was worth it when I was able to finish the design.

Approach that works best for my Learnings:

* Exploration- do further research about Smoothening terrain or objects.• Practice the mechanics I’m having a difficulty with.• Have patience

Learnings/ Discoveries:

- For this week, we learn how we can use diagramming and Sketch Up to methodically explore major generic options to understand how interior design choices affect the overall ambience of a space.

- We also need to assess, analyze, and explore in order to come up with a hypothesis in how to evoke the following type of ambiences:

(Note: the pictures found in the bottom of the following ambiances is my first assumptions of what the interior looks like with the said ambiance)

a. Warm, beckoning, and intimate (Photo 1)

b. Sophisticated, chic, and meditative (Photo 2)

c . Cheerful, airy, and ethereal (Photo 3)

d. Delightfully mysterious and thought provoking (Photo 4)

- This activity is also where we specifically need to evaluate the lengths and proportion of the room. Its dimensional and scale variation, and its spatial geometry.

My goal:

- In this first room , I wanted to evoke a relaxing airy feeling to my interior, and at the same time mix in some cheerfulness to the ambiance.

- I also plan to mix in my past learnings of the sketch up tools in order to create a complex and compelling structure design.

Strengths/ Comforts:

- I was able to successfully evoke the airy feeling I am trying to depict- Similarly, I also felt that I have also successfully depict a cheerful atmosphere.- Base on my past learning of the sketch up tool, I was able to create a compelling window and interior

design.

Weaknesses/ Problems:

- I wasn’t able to successfully combine the two ambiences together. When looking at my design, it seems like I just mesh the two ambiences together. That is, it appears like they don’t complement each other.

- This first structure also seems like just a stereotypical home.

- My window also failed its purpose. Instead of inviting sunlight to the interior of the structure, the window just look like a prosthetics.

Approach that works best for my Learnings:

• Inspiration- observing and analyzing the interior work of other architects help me have a foundation of how to start the activity.

• Practice the mechanics I’m having a difficulty with.

Learnings/ Discoveries:

- For this week, we started to study interior ambience. For, I learned that being an architect isn’t only making a unique building but we should also take into consideration the interior of the structure.

- We need to learn how to depict and produce certain feelings when structuring the interior of the structure.- We learn that one natural way we can depict a certain ambience is manipulating the direction of the sun. - In this week we also learn that there should be a communication between the interior and the exterior. Or, what

does the outside do to enhance the interior space of the structure.

My Goal:

In this second room, I am aiming to depict a sophisticated and meditative design. In order to produce this certain ambiance, I try to color my interior space with a meditative color, such as green and white. I also make it look sophisticated putting sophisticated looking wallpaper.

I also intend to focus the sunlight in the middle of the room so that I can have a meditative looking interior space. That is why I constructed the complex looking roof-window.

Strengths/ Comforts:

- I am happy with the results I get. Although, I failed to make the interior look sophisticated, I successfully depicted the meditative design.

- Unintentionally, I am able to create a mysterious ambience because of my chosen background ground and view.- I was also able to create a complex and unique design because of the window-roof structure.

- I now try to be thoughtful when taking money shots.- I also practice playing with the sun’s direction to get the type of ambience I want to achieve.- I discover that if I want to direct the sunlight in a specific space I should have a sun catcher of some kind

Learnings/ Discoveries:

- By asking my professor, I learn that I can make a Light-Scoop to fill my interior space up with sunlight.

- This is also where I learn that the Inside and outside relationships is important because having a view can

further emphasize the ambience we are trying to depict.

My Goal:

In this third room, I am aiming to portray a chic design. In order to establish this ambiance, I color my interior space with a chic and girly color, mainly white and pink. Having less knowledge of what a chic room looks like, I instantly assume that it should be a room for girls, so I fill up my interior space with a lot of pink colors. My stereotypical assumption was even reinforced when I research chic rooms in the internet and see pink princess’ rooms.

I also plan to make my structure have a Light Scoop so that I can create a bright and cheerful ambiance in this second room. Furthermore, the other reason why I like to capture the sunlight so that I can use the sunlight to cast decorative shadows in my interior space.

Reflection:

This is a visual of the mechanics of the Light Scoop. Seeing this figure, I learn that the geometry of the structure can also help in redirecting or capturing sunlight.

Strengths/ Comforts:

- I was very successful in capturing the sunlight. I was able to reproduce a spectacular sun pattern that brightens the room.

- I was also successful in depicting the chic ambiance because of all the chic design and pink color that I decorated.

- The Furniture also help in reinforcing the chic ambience, mainly because of the flimsy curtains.

Weaknesses/ Problems:

- This is a boring room because the interior predominantly consist of white. This makes the room less cheery despite the sun’s radiance.

- The pink color is also very overpowering.- The clerestory window also seems unfinished because, overlooked by me, I didn’t notice that the window

glass was protruding in its window pane.

How I solved my Problems

- I re-design my previous interior color, and I decided to paint some of interior walls blue so that it can slightly contradict the overpowering color of my chose pink color schemes.

- Also fixed the clerestory window so that it is not protruding in it’s enclosure

Learnings/ Discoveries:

- In this activity, I finally learned how to smoothen out the grid patterns of the terrain. I discover how to do it because I accidentally pressed the Soften/ Smooth Edges tool when I was editing a furniture. I was really happy with this discovery because now I can customize the roughness of my terrain.

- This is also where we learn that in order to capture an eye level perspective of the interior we should align the eyes of the person in the horizon line. - In this week, we learn how to properly manipulate the Shadow tool to create a dramatic experience to the audience.

My goal:

In this fourth room , I am aiming to depict the feeling of warmth and intimacy. I want to create a right atmosphere that can beckon the viewers to feel relax and cozy when they are viewing my interior space.

I also plan to color every inch of my wall to avoid repeating my second iteration. For, in my earlier room ambience work my interior space look boring because of all the white walls expose. Furthermore, I plan to be insightful in choosing my color tones and create a connection between my wall colors and furniture.

Strengths/ Comforts:

- I now have a knowledge how to smoothen rough faces.- I was able to successfully portray the feeling of warmth and intimacy.- Also I am beginning - In this activity, I am beginning to really get used to the move tool. - I am also happy that I were able create a connection between the furnishing of the room and the interiors walls.

Weaknesses/ Problems:

- Without the help of professor I wouldn’t have notice that my work is still unfinished- I also have a hard time creating a dramatic shadow in this iteration.- My window structure doesn’t seem realistic.

How I solved my Problems:

- For my window structure, I try to thicken the window panes to get depth, and make my window seem realistic. In addition, I realize that putting curtain in my window bring out the beauty of my window structure.

- To get a dramatic shadow, I followed my professor's advice and play around with the shadow light panel.- I also rechecked this iteration a fixed the unfinished problems.

- For this week, our activity was to make a structure out of a photo shot.- With this activity we learn how to identify and use this following elements:

Learnings/ Discoveries:

- In this week’s activity, we are doing a case study to study the mechanics and structural element of a real building or in this case cabin

- It is our task to explore and study thoroughly how a building is constructed together and what structural elements should be use to support the weight of the building.

- Doing this project, I am beginning to be more aware of how to construct a realistic structure. I am beginning to internalize that there should be beams and bolts to structurally hold the building together.

- I also discover that putting structural element can increase the complexity of design.

Strengths/ Comforts:

- Because I have thoroughly explored the tools we have used in the past iterations, I find this project a little easier to do than the Tadao Ando activity.

- I also have fun trying to figure out how to make my cabin structural.- I also enjoy learning how to install the sliding covers of the doors and windows in the cabin. This is all thanks to one of our

classmate who have a very keen eye for detail. He really helped me a lot to understand how a sliding cover works.

- I was really challenged in including my terrain in the my money shot.- Even though I have a fun time making the cabin, I still find it a little hard to construct the beam support

ConclusionAttending Architecture 20 really taught me a lot about 3D modelling. I have a lot of fun doing the activities in class because every works and assignments challenges me to enhance and develop my skill as an architect. And the activities unexpectedly release this creative side of me that I never expected I poses. I also learn a lot in this class. Especially how important structural elements are, and how this structures can further enhance the complexity and integrity of a structure. Furthermore, learning that being an architect doesn’t only mean designing exterior space but interior as well really open my eyes, and help me understand further what the architectural field really is. This class has been very fun and meaningful for me because not only did we learn how to use Sketch up, but with the use of the program I begin to have a deep understanding of what the architectural field really is about. So, despite this class difficulties, I really find the learning and knowledge I gained in this class very valuable.
