The University Hospital of Schleswig-Holstein which is run as an independent unit is the largest medical centre available to the population within the federal state of Schleswig-Holstein. It provides work for just under 10,000 employees. Kurt Alder (1902-1958): Developed the Diels-Alder synthesis together with his teacher Otto Diels. Winner of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, 1950.
Eduard Buchner (1860-1917): Discovered non-cellular fermentation, for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1907.
Otto Diels (1876-1954): After the Second World War he re-established the Institute for Chemistry of Kiel University, and was its Director for several decades (Nobel Prize with Alder in 1950).
Johann Friedrich August von Esmarch (1823-1908): Surgeon, specialist in the treatment of accident injuries, co-founder of First Aid in Germany. He received many honours and distinctions.

Heinrich Rudolf Hertz (1857-1894): Was the first to succeed in transmitting electromagnetic waves from a radiating antenna to a receiving antenna. His many honours included the Prix Lacaze of the Paris Academy of Sciences in 1950.
Otto Fritz Meyerhof (1884-1951): Physiologist who shared the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1922 with Archibald Vivian Hill for research on the physiology of muscle metabolism.
Max Planck (1858-1947): Established the foundations of the quantum theory and was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1918.
Ferdinand Julius Tönnies (1855-1936): Co-founder of the »German Society for Sociology«.
