CRIME: YOUNG GIRL FOUND WITH GAPING WOUNDS
Death hits family hardMBONGISENI MASEKO
The family of a 19 year old girl who wasraped and brutally killed is finding ithard to come to terms with her death.
The corpse of Bongiwe Ninini, from SiteC, was found stuffed in a drain with gapingwounds to her body, in an open field not farfrom Thembani shopping centre, on Fridaynight.
Constable Thembakazi Jacobs, communi-cations officer at the Khayelitsha police sta-tion said cases of murder and rape were be-ing investigated by the police regardingNin-ini’s death and that no arrest(s) have beenmade yet. Nosapho Sgelem, an aunt of thedeceased, said Ninini left home in RoseStreet with two male friends and one femalefriend onFriday evening. Theywere leavingfor their separate homes, according to her.
Sgelem said the friends later told themthat Ninini left the house at about 10pm tolook for another friend at a drinking spot inthe area, and that some patrons there saidshe did not stay long after she did not findthe said friend. It was not already clearwhere she headed to after leaving the drink-ing spot. She said theywerewoken up by thepolice in the early hours of Saturday morn-ingwho informed them thatNinini had been
killed. “One of her shoes was found next toa shack in the area, so we suspect that shewas dragged to an open space across thestreet. There was also blood next to theshack. Her mother (Nobongile Ninini) faint-ed after the police informed us that her bodywas found in the drain. We are so trauma-tised that we cannot sleep at night. It is hardto accept that she is dead,” Sgelem said.

Dare to be like anothericonic MandelaThe beauty of a dream is thatsmall things should notdistract it.Here’s something I’d like to
know. Why is Mandela sohonoured? What’s so specialabout him? Even his date ofbirth is honoured: MandelaDay.Why? He’s human like you
and me. And yet we are notbeen honoured like him. Ourdates of birth mean nothingto some people. No songs aresung about us. We are justordinary people. What did hedo to make him so special? From the tidbits I got about
him. At a gathering as ayoung man he once showed agun under his belt. Was he ashow off? According to thewriter, it appeared as if hewas. But he was not.He was courageous. If only
you knew the situation thosedays. And how vicious theregime was. You’d understandthe act. “I’m in the struggle. Are you?” It would meansomething like that. And then he was arrested
and sentenced to RobbenIsland. What did we expecthim to come out as such? When he went to prison hewas young and militant. Howwould he be when he comesout? Would he be bitter?Would he want revenge? Thebeauty of a dream is thatsmall things should notdistract it. Jail may not besmall. But to a dream it is.Criticism may be big. We arecriticized every day. We aretold our dreams are useless. But to a dream criticisms aresmall. What I am trying tosay after his release Mandela
continued to pursue hisdream. He wore a Springbok jersey.
That was a tipping point. Thecountry came together. Thatis what I was thinking abouton this Mandela Day. I wasthinking; what makes himtick? I think the answer liesin what he said, “It is not aquestion of a leader. It is aquestion of a person who doessomething.” No one dare say Iwant to be like Mandela.People would think you arecrazy. But they don’t under-stand. This is not about thestruggle. The struggle is over.I doubt whether there wouldbe another struggle. That’s done with. Gone
forever. What is there isdifferent. And it wants you.The question is; are you up toit. Can you tackle it? This iswhat would make you likeMandela. What are you doingto solve problems aroundyou? SA wants you.You know; I have just
finished Vusi Pikoli’s book. Itwas a painful book. That mannever had it so bad. He hasthe answers, but he does notwant to lead. In my view, he’sanother Mandela waiting toblossom.Stay positive.

Youth on the mend help peersA church based mission to rehabilitate
formerly delinquent youngsters con-tinues to record positive results for
their efforts, writes Mbongiseni Maseko. The Community Bible Society in Site C,
has received highly deserved praised froma group of former gangsters and drug ad-dicts, who claim that their bad habits havechanged dramatically since they attendedthe rehabilitation programmes conductedunder the auspices of the church.Phumzile Makili, a Social Worker at the
society, said they have compiled a pro-gramme based on imparting life-skills andspiritual lessons on the youth, and its allcoming together.“We transform them from hardened gang-
sters and drug addicts to community lead-ers. The teaching of Jesus are central to ourendeavours. We want them to know God and succeed
in life. Initially their parents find it hard tobelieve that their children have changed. Some have since followed their children byjoining the church, because of the changethat they see in them.”Part of the rehabilitation programmes in-
volve taking the youth out on excursionslike camping, during the June and Decem-ber holidays. They also help expose them to career gui-
dance classes. The programme has been running since
2007, and its recruits are between the agesof 14 and 35 years.Only about 50 spaces are available for each
intake.“Shortage of space is always a challenge,
as more and more youth numbers show in-terest in the project.”Every end of term, 10 of the youngsters
from each successful programme are alwaysasked to stay behind as mentors to the newcadets.
Currently they also have four femaleswhoare part of the programme.Makili said they also help school-drop-
outs find their way back to the classroomagain.“We also offer bursaries for tertiary level
students,” she shared.According to her, about 150 youth from
their project have since benefited from theExpanded Public Works Programme(EPWP); a key government initiative whichoffers work in short term projects in the are-as from which they come, as a means to-wards sustainable livelihoods, and as anadded sting in the fight against poverty andcrime.Makili also said theyhave recently formed
an “exciting” partnershipwith theUniversi-ty of Western Cape (UWC) and also a newlyformed organisation, Ntlantle CommunityDevelopment Health Care.Libanathi Bhula, 19, a former gangster,
praised the project formaking a positive im-pact in his life.“I was a member of Vato group(gangster
formation). My behaviour was bad. I wouldleavehomeandcomeback the followingday. My parents were not happy about the thingsthat I did. The reason for joining the gang-sters was to attract attention frommy peers.
My life has changed for the better since be-coming part of the programme.Bhula said, at first, his parents did not be-
lieve that “I have changed, but my motherhas since joined the church after seeing thedifference in my life.
I am happy that there are people who taketheir time to put youth in the right track insociety.”Bhula dropped out of school in Grade 10
in 2012, but is now back and doing matric atThembelihle High School. He has already been promised a bursary
towards his law studies, should he passMat-ric. Sthandile Magwaxaze, 23, the founder ofNtlantle Community Development HealthCare and a former gangster, said pro-grammes rendered by his organisation are
aimed at decreasing the level of crime in thearea. In the project, he always takes care to
share his past experience in gangsterismand substance abuse andmakes them awareof the pitfalls of such activities.“I was involved in crime and substance
abuse since 2007, which adversely affectedmy studies. I have since kicked the habit anduse that experience to deter the youth fromgetting involved in such behaviour. I amproud to say I am now following a path to-wards achieving my dreams,” he shared.A former tourism student at Northlink
College, Magwaxaze said his delinquent be-haviour saw him loose focus and fail in hisstudies. “I have since opted for a life witha purpose and helping others.”
I have chosen ameaningful lifeand I am now help-ing others

Madiba Day treats leave lasting memoryMANDLA MAHASHE
A visit by DSTV employees at Khayelit-sha’s Bathandwa Orphanage Home issure to leave a lasting impression on
the children. On Tuesday a group of about 40 staff mem-
bers spent the whole day with the 27 childrenat this centre.
Their visit however is one that one be for-gotten quite easily as they donated home ap-pliances including a fridge, microwave andTV sets as well as a DSTV subscription oftwo years.
“We want to make sure that these childrendo not feel the void cause by their lack of par-ents. We want to make sure that just like oth-er children they can have such luxuries suchas watching programs on pay TV channels,”said DSTV’s Lisa Ndyalivane.
The group also donated bedding materialfor the children as well as spent the wholeday participating in activities with theyoung children.
“We also did some spring cleaning for
them as well as set up DSTV points in therooms so that they can watch different pro-grams.
We wanted to make it as homely as possi-ble because children are the future and thebetter their living environment the bettergrownups they can be ,” she said.
Dyalivane said that the visit was part ofthe 67 minutes for Madiba projects in theprovince aimed to improved the lives ofthose in need.
Founder of the home, Virginia Mbolekwa, said that she was overjoyed by the visit. “Iwas very happy to see how well the childrenwarmed up to the visitors. They were play-ing games and they had a wonderful time. This is good for the children as it gives thema good moral and hopefully it will urge themto do good as school as they are happy,” shenoted.
She said that they were grateful for the ap-pliances as they were in a serious need. “Theappliances that we had were old and theywould have let us down in the near futureand we are very pleased that they went out
of their way. Not only to donated but tospend time with our children,” she said.
It was a day to be remembered as staff members from DSTV spend the day with children at theBathandwa Orphanage Centre in Khayelitsha.
Death robs family of young girlFrom Page 1
Some residents told the family that theyheard someone crying for help, but theywere afraid to intervene as they heardtwo gun shots going off, but it was notclear if it was related to her death.
Sgelem said a security guard who waswalking in the area saw three unidenti-fied males putting Ninini’s body in thedrain.
The would-be suspects ran towards theshacks after they were disrupted by thesecurity guard.
Ninini’s body was found naked and hadmultiple open wounds on the upper body.
“Her eyes were gouged out and herteeth were removed,” Sgelem added.
Nobongile Ninini was still traumatisedto speak to us when visited on Monday.
Ninini was a Grade 10 learner at LangaHigh School.
She left behind her parents and broth-er.
Her funeral arrangements were not fi-nalised yet.
Officials nabbed for corruptionFour vehicle licensing officials have been re-leased on R3 000 bail after appearing in theCape Town Magistrate’s Court on Wednes-day on 118 charges of fraud, corruption anddefeating the ends of justice.
Farouk Martin, Sivuyile Charlie and Xol-ani Qhinga were arrested outside theirworkplace at the Cape Town Civic Centre onMonday, while Lwandiso Mawisa was ar-rested at home after being booked off sick.
The accused, who are all employees of theCity of Cape Town’s motor vehicle registra-tion department, were taken into custodyfollowing a near two-month investigation in-to “irregular transactions” involving the is-suing of licences to owners of vehicles whohad administration marks on the e-NatisSystem.
Admin marks, introduced by the council
in 2013 as part of a package of interventionsto recoup outstanding fines, are given to mo-torists who have been issued with a warrantof arrest for failing to appear in court fortraffic violations, the City explained in astatement.
This prevents the motorist from renewinga vehicle licence, driving licence, motor ve-hicle registration or professional drivingpermit.
Mayoral Committee Member for Safetyand Security JP Smith said it appears thesuspects circumvented the system.
“One can only assume that there was anexchange of cash or other favours to makethis possible.
“Currently, the docket includes 118 char-ges of which 74 involve taxi owners. But thecharge sheet will get even longer,” he said.

Buy a book for next generationThe sixth annual National Book Week cele-brated Nelson Mandela Day with a “Call ToAction” for individuals and businesses tojoin the Buy a Book Campaign: 67 Books for67 Minutes. The campaign is run by the South African
Book Development Council to stimulate andgrow the local book industry by developingreaders and supporting South African au-thors.National Book Week takes place on Sep-
tember 7-13 this year. This July, as the nation honours Nelson
Mandela’s legacy, the campaign has calledon big business to turn their 67 minutes ofservice into R 6700 for 67 Books by South Af-rican authors. It wasMadibawho said that “It ismywish
that the voice of the storyteller may neverdie in Africa, that all the children of theworldmay experience thewonder of books.”NBW invites everybody to help buildMad-
iba’s dream of a better SouthAfrica 67 booksat a time.Guided byMadiba’s passion for education
and reading, the Buy A Book Campaign isabout putting books in the homes of under-privileged families and individuals who canotherwise not afford them.NBWhas partnered with CapeMedia Cor-
poration (CMC), whichwill use their annualCorporate Social Investment Programme tojoin in the Buy A Book Campaign.Cape Media will donate books to Children
at the Ncedolwethu Orphanage in Mfuleni, and theDangerousHeroes girls’ soccer teamin Phillipi Township.CMC embraced the campaign immediate-
ly because it’s a rare opportunity to not onlydonate books, but to share the joy of readingwith the children in their mother tongue, asNelson Mandela himself once said: “If youtalk to a man in a language he understands,it goes to his head. If you talk to him in hislanguage that goes to his heart,” says RobertArendse, Managing Director. Why the Buy A Book Campaign is so im-
portant. The Buy A Book Campaign aims to create
better-informed and self-reliant communi-ties by investing in the literacy of youngpeo-ple and underprivileged adults. The campaign ismotivated by studies that
show that children who grow up with bookshave stronger chances at greater education-al attainment; easily transcend hurdles of-ten imposed by the low educational levels oftheir parents, their community’s grim eco-nomics or thepolitical systemsof their coun-try.

Plan for death in advance
When he saw the need to help poorpeople give their loved ones a aproper send off, a security company
owner branched off into the burial busi-ness.Elliott Mnquma of Ilizwe Securities and

loved ones but I came to a decision that Imust come to a stop through education,”said Elliott.Since he employs an army of security per-

portance of having funeral policies and thatgave birth to the idea that I should start aburial scheme.I hope this will help a lot of people realise
that they must be ready for any eventuali-ty,” he said.Assisted by his wife Asanda, they have
transformed their old house inMakhaza in-to an office where “members come for ad-vice”“The community has receive this service
with open arms and they are inquiring dai-ly about the serviceswe offer,” saidAsanda.Elliott revealed that most of their clients
are from the Eastern Cape and as such theyhave advanced plans to build a hugemortu-ary in the villages near eNgcobo.“We noted that rural families are strug-
gling when it comes to having funerals, sowe will be taking the service to their doorsteps,” said Elliott. He said black communities must be
taught the value of ensuring lives becausethey have a “huge culture on funerals”“They must plan for this,” he said,

Billed as a ‘Tribute 2 Tata’, a tournamentstaged by Duma Boxing Promotions(DBP) at the Thusong Centre onMadiba
Day lived up to expectations as the pugilistsdelivered the goods.Buoyed by the more than 900 fans , the 26
boxers traded blows, absorbed blows andwere at pains to impress the judges.Nerve-wrecked DBP event co-ordinator
Makheke Pheleu breathed a sigh of reliefwhen exactly at 10pm fight fans filed out ofthe hall.“It was simply toomuch boxing because we
had 13 bouts, we started at 2pm and by 7pmthere were still more to come,” he said.Pheleu said though the real champions
were the boxers on the day, it was the compa-nies that bank-rolled the tournament who de-serve to have “their names written in gold”.The tournament was sponsored by Bato
Star Holdings, Western Cape provincial gov-ernment, Vodacom, Jobela Star Bus Services,Marshall Sports, Mzoli Financial Services,Yoto, Punch and Buyelembo Village.Bato Star Holdings chairman Patrick
Mngxunyeni said they were highly pleasedwith the event and vowed to make it biggerin 2016.“Our company believes in empowering
youth through sport and education,” saidMngxunyeni.Matshidiso Ndlovu, Vodacom brand am-
bassador, who a week earlier, had toured theCape Flats with the boxers marketing thetournament and them-Pesa service, could nothide her excitement.“This is really amazing for me because I
was with the boxers last week when theypromised to dish out a good performance andtoday they did just that,” said Tsidi.Fight promoter Duma Nogaga stood in dis-
belief as fans filed in, waving at him.
“I am thrilled to see boxers and fans in ahappy mood. We will definitely sit down withVoox Sonandzi and Makheke who master-minded this tournament and plan a way for-ward but definitely we will throw anothertournament soon,” he said.DBP security head retired SergeantMickey
Tower Nkokhi said despite the large numberof people he was not concerned because hehad an “army of trusted guards ” around thepremises.“We were in constant contact with the po-
lice just to make sure everything was undercontrol,” said Nkokhi.
Boxing SouthAfricaWesternCape chair-man Mickey Klaas was smiling from ear toear.“It’s my first to officiate a match so large.
I had spoken to the matchmaker to cut downon the number of bouts but he insisted thatboxers come first. I amhappy forDBP for pull-ing this off,” he said.In a rare moment Nogaga andMngxunyeni
handed over a Madiba birthday cake to MrWili who had spent time in jail with Mandelain 1970s.A visibly emotional Wili was at a loss for
words as a few tears trickled downhis cheeks. His comrades hurriedly dried his tears and
immediately erupted into freedom songs incelebration.“Madiba fought a good fight and today we
saw young boxers doing some great things inthe ring and we hope that out of this, champi-ons and community builders will be born,”said Mngxunyeni. In the main bout Cristiano Ndombassy of
Angola, but now fighting out of SomersetWest won a controversial decision over a pol-ished Mdantsane pugilist, Malibongwe Ndzu-be when he was adjudged to have scored atechnical knockout out.

Having produced some amazing talentin the past and present, theVelokhayaLife Cycling Academy has received a
major boost with the construction of a stateof the art ITC centre. The Khayelitsha based academy is on
record having produced township talentsthe likes of Luthando Kaka, a member ofTeam Bonitas, South Africa’s Top CyclingTeam, BMX championship medallist AnitaZenani and Songezo Jim who is one of themembers of the MTN Qhubeka team whichwon the 14th stage of the Tour de France thispast weekend. The centre, to be built from next month,
has been donated by the MTN SA Founda-tion as a result of a two-way relationshipwith the company and the academy.Judith Maluleke, MTN SA Foundation
Corporate Social Investment manager, saidthe building is aimed at not only improvingcycling but other aspects for the academymembers who are aged between four and 40years old.“The new building will have a media cen-
tre where they would be able to do theirhomework. There will also be an indoor gym and a bi-
cycle repair centre, because the kind of bicy-cles they used are quite high end and theyneed proper maintenance,” said Maluleke. She said that the donation was part of the
foundation’s 67minutes forMadiba and thatthey were passionate about developing the
community.“The academy has produced amazing cy-
clists who have gone on to create careersfor themselves. This is ourwayofmaking sure thatmany
more can be discovered. Keeping in mindthat many of the children in the area comefrom previously disadvantage back-grounds,” she said.Sipho Mona, Velokhaya Life Cycling
Academy general manager, said that theywere excited about the use of the new facili-ty.“One of the awesome features of the facil-
ity is the indoor gymwhichmeans that ourcyclist can train even when the weather isnot so good.It is a wonderful donation for us and it
will definitelyhelpuswith the spotting andgrooming young talents from our town-ships,” said Mona. The academy boasts 105 young full-time
members, including some adults, who usethe facility for health purposes. The academy was established 2003 as a
not for profit organisation whose aim wasto use cycling-based programmes to in-volve township youth in a positive, after-school activities.“Our aim is to give children from disad-
vantaged communities the skills and op-portunities they need to make a success oftheir lives. Our three main activities areroad cycling, BMXing and Mountain bik-ing which is gaining popularity among ourcyclists,” said Mona.
